Best of Central Iowa

I have a serious stylistic disagreement with the use of superlatives. I never use them, and I disregard nearly every person who uses them. Its a low information way to communicate. Unless someone has literally eaten everything in an entire geographic area the claim is hollow or inaccurate or worse.

I think I attached a photo of a dish named Chicharrones Preperados from Anotjitos Mexicanos truck on MLK in front of Gomez Tire. If this is available anywhere else, I would be interested.

La Pena changed management in March, they added molletes and mexican hot dogs, and might have a hot dog stand somewhere soon. La Rose just reopened for the second or third time, they may be switching to only being open in the summer or something.

My pics of La Pena are here, if chow still lets people share links

Gateway Market Cafe is a jack of all trades, master of none. Better fries can be found at Library Cafe or Cactus Bobs BBQ Corral, And I haven't even been to Django to try their poutine.

I hope you mean Kurry Xpress in Clive with their weirdly awful service and presentation but interesting menu.

Hamburger & fries in Cedar Rapids?

Are you up for a drive to Newton's in Waterloo or Shorts Burgers and Shine in Iowa City? Breitbach's in Balltown won a James Beard Award for being an "American Classic" over ten years ago.

Cuban in Des Moines?

When that Nuevo Latino place opens up in the Des Moines Social Club Firehouse building, they plan on having a cuban fritas burger. They may have the Cuban Sandwich too.

[Des Moines, IA] Cafe Di Scala

Thanks for the detailed report. The small setting and limited number or reservations means not that many people get inside there. The same people opened a pizza place (Tony's), closed that pizza place, opened another one (Gusto), then opened a fast casual place (Host) that flopped then turned it into a Hot Dog place (Hotshots) that is doing pretty well. Gusto may expand in the suburbs soon.

Pizza- Des Moines

You chose the right Felix & Oscar's location. The area has seen better days, now its just wedged between an abandoned movie and empty shopping center. Oddly enough, I hear F&O's has good chicken wings. I'd advise people to avoid their WDM location.

Upscale Burger in Des Moines? (or anywhere)

Is there no love for the Tartine Burger, topped with La Quercia Prosciutto, Arugula, Truffle Mayo, and cheese?

The Rusty Duck in Dexter won an award from the Iowa Beef/Cattlemans organization a year ago. One of their burgers is steak trimming ground up and sells out soon after they open at five. Their other burgers are fresh ground as well.

Some local places have added bacon ground burgers or Juicy Lucy style burgers to their menus. But I am not exactly Mr Burger and these are not high on my list to check out.

Cedar Rapids

Worth a visit is how I would rate Cedar Rapids.

The smaller towns in the corridor area and nearby places like Oxford, Ladora, Solon, Sutcliff, Marengo, Mt Vernon, or Amana will have about one restaurant per town that the locals insist is great.

Cedar Rapids

I would recommend visiting plenty of places in the rebuilt Czech Village area. Westside Maid-Rite, Al's Blue Toad, Sykora Bakery, and Little Bohemia Bar & Grill. These are all neighborhood places that get people from around Cedar Rapids since the local population moved.

Part of Iowa City's bar/restaurant scene is aimed only at students, its tough for any restaurant without a bar to make it in the pedmall area. Coralville and North Liberty have more of the prosperous suburban type places.

Cedar Rapids just isn't as rich/snobby/sophisticated as Iowa City. The restaurants don't have the high prices or execution, especially at the higher end of the spectrum.

If you like small town pre-fab rail car diners then The Fort Sandwich Shop in Ft Madison, Iowa is good. Just outside your territory is Schera's in Elkader.

Iowa - Regional Food ideas anyone???

The loosemeat/maid-rite/made-right sandwich is not complicated, and the only ingredients are ground beef and salt with a steamed bun.

A huge portion of Iowa soybeans are exported to China, up to a quarter of the whole deal someday according to forecasts. So its like Iowa is growing ingredients for Chinese food.

The Little Bohemia Bar & Grill in the Czech Village just recently got their kitchen back to a full menu of what they served before the flood. Worth checking out.

Des Moines Update

Tartine is new, but its like a casual version of Baru.
Smokey D's north location is a model of BBQ and crowd control efficiency, they get nearly as many people as the Olive Garden in Ankeny.
Zombie Burger wins the "best online promotion" award for new restaurants in Des Moines this year. They ran out of food and had lines out the door when the place opened. All of this for burgers.
Americana downtown is new also.

Des Moines Update

What are you comparing the loin from Saints Pub & Patio to, if I may ask? I had always put off trying it because the place is owned by some people who mostly operate trendy bars, but they do have good wings that are 50cents on weekends. Tully's across the street advertised a half pound loin, but like most of the stuff on the menu, it was poorly executed.

For fried chicken, try the Q in West Des Moines.

The Little Nipper changed management and remodeled the interior recently, I haven't been there since.

The Dinky Diner in Decatur City serves a good breakfast in an original double-wide prefab diner manufactured in the fifties.

The Roadside Inn in Martensdale advertises a "famous giant loin" on the menu, but you can find a better one ten miles off the freeway in Old Peru, right next to East Peru at the Peru Bar and Grill, get off on the Truro exit. My review is here:

Return of Raul's in Des Moines

I have never heard anything good about the place, but I understand it was one of the first mexican restaurants in the Des Moines area. Its location has been a death knell for new places, with constant openings and closing on that street for the last ten years.
