First time in NYC - Eating near 48th st and 8th ave

First of all I want to thank everyone for the great answers. I'm looking into each and one of your recommendations.

biondanonima, of course we'll be sightseeing! And I can't wait to be there!

We'll be doing a lot of walking around Midtown (both East and West), Central Park, Upper West Side (mainly because of AMNH), Chinatown, Financial District, Battery Park, South Street Seaport, .... So much to see and so little time....

First time in NYC - Coffee/Espresso

That's exactly what I'm talking about (bica)! Have you ever tasted it Kathryn? If you have you know how different it is from the typical US coffee.

First time in NYC - Eating near 48th st and 8th ave

I'll be in NYC from May 2 until May 9. I will be travelling with some relatives (we are a party of 8: 7 adults and a 4 year old child) and we will be staying at the Belvedere Hotel (48th st and 8th ave).

At the moment, I'm looking for places to eat and I have some doubts that I will divide into several posts to make it easier to answer:

Since we are a party of 8, will it be difficult to find places to eat without making reservations? (both at lunch and dinner time)

Where can we have breakfast near the Hotel? Since we have a kitchenette in the room do you think it would be a good idea (i.e. cheaper) to buy some food and just eat it at the hotel?

For dinner we are considering meals for up to 30/40 USD per person (without beverages). Where could we eat for that amount?

Thank you for your help!

We are from Portugal. If any of you have ever been in this country, you should know that our coffee is pretty different from yours. We usually drink small cups of a very intense, highly-flavoured coffee (sort of an espresso). Is there anything like this in NYC?

From what I have read and have seen in movies you usually have big cups of coffee that we are, obviously, willing to try. However, some of us are highly addicted to “our” coffee and would like to know if is possible to have something similar in NYC.

Thank you for your help!

- We have never been to the US. What kind of food would you advise us not to miss?
