Automatic gratuity - what % is normal?

I'll admit that we don't get out much because we have young kids, and not in big groups, so I rarely deal with automatic gratuity...
But, I was at a work party at O&B at bayview village and because there were 16 of us, the 18% was added on. We were warned of that when we made the reservation, so it wasn't a surprise, but I was definitely surprised by the inadequate service. We went at 4-4:15 ish in the afternoon, so it was not busy, but we waited almost 10 minutes before drink orders were taken, another 8-10 before meal orders, then a good 20+ minute wait until the meals came. Our server made herself scarce and we couldn't get anyone else's attention to ask and when we did, she told us that making meals for 16 people is difficult and takes time. Ummmm, isn't that what restaurants do? Of the 16 meals, 5 were hamburgers and 6 were pasta. Those don't take 20+ minutes to organize.
When one of my colleagues asked for his bill as he had to leave as she was handing out the dessert menus, he was told that she could not print out his bill (even though we had separate billing) because she had to enter the desserts first. With all the technology we have today, is it possible that an operation as large as O & B has a program that would not allow you to print one bill in a party? I find that hard to believe.
(I had the parsnip ravioli with wilted spinach, walnuts and goat cheese. It was fine, but not spectacular.)
So, what is the norm for automatic gratuities? And do you find that service lacks when they know they will receive 18% anyway?

Has anyone heard of Carleton butter before? I was at the Warden costco yesterday and instead of sealtest salted, they had Carleton...I think it said New Brunswick? I didn't buy any because I didn't need any butter, but it caught my eye as I walked past (what can I say, the package was sliver with red and green - it looked Christmassy!). It was 1 lb for $3.59.

+1 for warden gas bar = ridiculous! Even on a weekday in what I'd consider "off hours".
That's why I commented, as I was in such shock at the etobicoke store when I literally pulled in and right up to a pump!

the bag says: Belgian dark chocolate 60%. I believe the milk is 33% or 34% and they also carry a 72%.

I too love eating and baking (and did I mention eating?) the galerie au chocolat discs. I ordered them in March and they are awesome. Ingredient list on my bag is: cocoa mass, sugar, cocoa butter, soya lecithin, natural vanilla. I bought the 60% and it comes in 2x5 kg bags

Hi ssainani and Nevy,
Thanks for responding...I ended up going to the etobicoke location. The setup is similar to the Elgin mills store. I liked that when I was there (Wednesday afternoon), there was NO lineup for gas, so managed to fill up and then browse in the store within minutes! Ooooh, they were sampling at least 4 different cheeses - yum! Enjoyed looking around, but didn't end up buying much out of the ordinary. (That could have been because my car was already full from a warehouse sale I was at earlier!) It does always seem like the west end locations have more interesting high-end/discount merch though. I don't get out there too often, but I'll look forward to planning another trip out there.

Okay, west-enders, I am heading out to Etobicoke/Mississauga tomorrow and I want to know - which Costco should I visit? I'm thinking: best selection, biggest, most fun for Costco lovers.
50 Queen Elizabeth Blvd, 1570 Dundas St. E or 5900 Rodeo Dr?
TIA!

Funny, the Warden Costco is where I usually shop and I was going to ask on here if anyone else thought it was still worth going to...all the good clearance deals that Nevy posts don't happen there and quite a few of the products I haven't been able to get at Warden I found at the billy bishop location today (organic cane sugar, organic tomato sauce, Dijon mustard...).

Just in case anyone else is interested, the "Something Special" antipasto (940 g for $9.49) is back at the warden location!

Hi mrsleny, I saw frozen pineapple chunks at the warden location on Friday. Only about two cases left, though. Hope they don't stop carrying them...I love 'em!

Can we make T-shirts with "I heart Nevy" on them?? Thanks, I just got back from Costco myself (Warden) and I picked up the praeventia cookies. I've never tried the choc chip cookie before, so I hope the kids like them! Thanks so much for remembering my request!
The popcorners road show was there and there is a new flavour, sweet chili.
How is it that I just returned from Costco and I still see things in your post that make me think I should run back? I forgot to look for bob's steel cut oats, BBQ sauce, and now tennis racquets ....

Bakeries that bake birthday cake from scratch

May I ask where you ended up getting your cake? I'm celebrating a big birthday at the end of August and I want to find something really delicious to serve 30-40 people. I visited Empire Bakery at Yonge and Steeles and thought the cakes (Napoleon and Sour Cream) were okay, but didn't blow me away. Tried a lovely Black Forest at Sweet Note at Hwy 7 and Leslie, but don't think the price would be in our range.
DH thinks no one will care or know the difference between an okay cake and an amazing cake. I love to bake, so it matters to me that it knock my socks off.

"Gluten-free on the forks" - made me laugh and spit water on the iPad! Thanks, I think? I'm on the look out for the snack packs of Praeventia chocolate cookies, shaped like hearts. I was told they'd be back in stock for back to school, but haven't seen them yet. I'd appreciate if you saw them to post it. Thanks!

It's the one levy describes below, Tuscan kale with lemon garlic vinaigrette for $6.99. I'm going to add red onion and we'll see at dinner tonight if there are any other additions that seem suitable!
I also saw the wild greens and quinoa one and I'll probably pick that one up to try next time.
And yes, I love arugula, but it certainly is a particular taste.

Best Lunch and Dinner Restaurant Req's for Toronto Near Blue Jays Stadium?

We just had dinner at Victor on Mercer Street last week and it was fantastic. Great food, excellent service. We tried the organic salmon, Toronto spiced burger, steak and three Toronto tasting dishes - Parkdale, little India and the sushi one. All very enjoyable! I'd highly recommend it. I'm excited to go back for my birthday next month!

The popcorn is great - we've been through a couple of bags already! It's slightly cheaper than the skinny pop bag.
Just wondering if anyone has tried the new bagged salad in the produce section - I think it is lemon kale or something like that?

I usually shop at the warden location. I've been on the lookout for the jar of antipasto for over a month now. I think it's $10 . . . Can't remember the brand. Has anyone seen it anywhere else? I also haven't seen the Maille Dijon mustard for a long time, but finally got some at the billy bishop location today.
I love reading the costco thread . . . Makes me feel like I'm not the only one who might be obsessed with shopping there! :)

Cookie dough for ice cream cones

I saw on Pinterest (from dudefoods.com) a cone made of a large chocolate chip cookie. He used store-bought dough and rolled it into a cone shape while it was still warm. I totally want to try this, but I'm not sure how my usual choc chip cookie dough recipe would hold up to being rolled. Does anyone have a recipe they have done this with? Or ideas how to make a recipe more "elastic" or malleable? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

What to do with Brazil nuts??

So we've been eating mixed nuts a lot lately . . . but I don't like the taste of the Brazil nuts on their own. It seems like an awful waste to throw them out, so does anyone have suggestions about how to use them? (Preferably so that they don't taste like Brazil nuts!! Or is that asking too much?) I've got about 2 cups of them. TIA!

The Costco Thread - new products, old favourites, interesting items

Omg, yes, le calumet! My kids ate it every day and it killed me when they stopped selling it! When we were taking pictures and told them to say cheese, they would always say "smoked Gouda"! They have a 3 Pack of Gouda, smoked gouda and Edam for $10 but I haven't tried it yet.

Source for Macadamia nuts

I can't remember the price, but I remember seeing macadamia nuts (raw and unsalted I believe) at Ambrosia on Doncaster Ave. I don't think they have them all the time, but perhaps you could call and ask. Mmmm, macadamia nuts . . .

Where in Toronto can I find a nut dispenser?

I love you all. Simple as that. You have come to my rescue. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll probably search for something like the Zevro Space Saver, if I can find one in store. It looks like it'd be fun for the kids and less breakable than the glass ones.

Where in Toronto can I find a nut dispenser?

My dad has finally decided that 14 grandchildren sticking their hands in his bowls/jars of nuts is icky. (He's very tolerant for putting up with it this long!) He doesn't have a specific idea of what a nut dispenser should look like, and I haven't a clue where to find one! He usually has cashews and almonds, if size makes a difference. Any suggestions where I could find something in Toronto or online?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Farmers' markets vs "farmers" markets

Hey SCG, I joined a great vegetable CSA this year. Her name is Brenda (she was one of the farmers in the book "Locavore") and she and an intern run Black Sheep Farms. She delivers every second week from end of June to October. So far the stuff has been beautiful, delicious and all natural! Yummmmm.

Best frozen grocery-store burger in Toronto?

For hot dogs, the only ones I don't feel guilty giving my kids are the Life Choices ones-no nitrates, all beef, no fillers, soy and gluten free for those who need it, and they actually taste good! The only thing is, of course, they are more expensive than regular dogs, and they don't carry them in every grocery store. But well worth searching out, IMO. If you can find them at Loblaws or Superstore or Metro, go to the lifechoicesfoods.com site first and print off the $1 off coupon - good for any of their products! (also really love their meatballs, fish fillets, pierogies)
