Sour cherries

I found them! Market Hall Produce in Rockridge had them today. It's normally the first place I check, and I did last week. But they must have just come in. I bought about 1/2 of their supply but they still had 4 or 5 lbs in the bin (and possibly more in the back) when I left, if anyone else is looking.

Sour cherries

Thanks! That's a trek for me, but I may have to do it!

Sour cherries

Do you really snack on sour cherries? They're too tart for me until processed!

Sour cherries

Thanks! That's a good alternative if I can't find fresh. The El Cerrito one?

Sour cherries

Thanks! I'll be near Middle East Market today. I'll check it out, but it sounds like a long shot!

Sour cherries

I bought sour cherries this time last year and made a pie for my dad's birthday. His birthday is Friday. Does anyone have sour cherries? Have they been and gone? Or still to come? Anyone know? I did ask one stand at the farmer's market a month or two ago and they said the crop would not be very big this year thanks to the drought and they would not be bringing any to the market.

Baking powder safe in canning?

My freezer is always packed! I read up on baking powder and it sounds like it's neutral--it has baking soda in it but it also has added acid. So hopefully it'll be fine. If I don't get any other info before I have to can, I'll just go for it.

Baking powder safe in canning?

Also, you're right, it is supposed to be baking soda. The fact remains that I used baking powder. Do you know if baking powder has an affect on the acid level?

Baking powder safe in canning?

Thanks. I put both orange juice and lemon juice in the butter. So there was a fair amount of added acid.

Baking powder safe in canning?

I made some persimmon butter with extremely ripe hachiya persimmons. They were sweet and not at all astringent. I had read that they get more astringent when cooked but I thought I'd give it a shot. The butter is very tasty but has more astringency than I, personally, like. It's like a very astringent black tea. I found something online that said if you add baking powder to persimmon purée when cooking that it helps the astringency. I threw some in and am letting it cook a bit to see if it helps.

I was planning to can this butter in a hot water bath. But I can't find any information on canning with baking powder. I assume it's probably fine but I just want to make sure. I've been canning frequently for about a year. This is the first time I'm winging it on a recipe. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sour cherries @ Ferry Plaza farmers market today

I found some at Market Hall Produce in Oakland last week at $8.95/lb.

Biscoff Spread (aka Speculoos): A serious addiction!

Have you tried the chocolate bar with speculoos inside it at Trader Joe's? I had to stop buying the jar of speculoos because it's too tempting but I'll buy the candy bar now and then. Yum!

Has something changed with canning lids?

I'm new to canning so have started pretty simple. My parents had a ton of tomatoes and apples in their backyard. So I made applesauce, caramel apple butter, tomato-apple chutney, and green tomato salsa. I'm about to make some green tomato chutney and some pickled speckle pears. I've also made some pickles and cured some olives but didn't can any of those. I'm really enjoying taking advantage of all the produce available both for free and from the farmer's market in the last few months.

Has something changed with canning lids?

I know this is an old thread, but I just started canning in the last two months and I love the ping! I use the Balls with the silver bands and they almost always ping and I've only had one jar fail to seal properly (which I only discovered when I checked the lid with a little tug). I've probably canned 50 jars or more in the last two months.

Boston clam chowder with no pork?

Thanks all! A lot of places I checked out had pork in their chowder, but I found pork-less clam chowder at Jacob Wirth. It was tasty! I appreciate all your advice.

Boston clam chowder with no pork?

I love clam chowder and I'm a fish eating vegetarian. I'm in Boston until Tuesday afternoon and I'd love to have some clam chowder. But from everything I've read (and experienced so far), Boston clam chowder has pork in it. Is there somewhere in Boston that has great, porkless clam chowder? We have a car so location isn't much of an issue. We're staying in Newton. Thanks!

It only seems to be a problem in Firefox. Recipes work in IE. Please fix so I don't have to use IE. Thanks.

Can't get to "saved recipes" in My Chow

I'm having the same problem, can't access any recipes on the site. I can get to the page listing recipes but when I click on an individual recipe I get this error: There's been a slight problem...

"Sorry, something's not working with this page. The CHOW team has been notified and will check it out.
If there's something else we can provide in the meantime, please try searching:"

I get this for every recipe I click on.

Cafe Madrid - New lunch option in downtown Oakland?

I'm a big fan of this sort of spanish food--I love bocadillos. These are a little too bread-heavy, as the commenters above said (and I'm reviewing this a year later than all the reviews above so clearly it's not something they intend to change). They also don't have many vegetarian options. I haven't been impressed by anything I've eaten there except the other day I tried their carrot soup. It was amazing. Not creamy, just full of big carrots and deliciousness. I recommend it highly!
