if you had to choose...?

of course you could! if your region is what you love, why deny yourself?

if you had to choose...?

So many great combinations! Poor traditional British cuisine didn't stand a chance, which is hilarious because I'm craving fish & chips today! :)

deal! I am impressed that you were able to make up your mind so quickly. it makes me wonder what you'd pick had I said no to the creative dessert tweaking! hahaha

if you had to choose...?

if you could only pick 2 regional cuisines to eat for the rest of your life, which two would you choose? ok, two is nearly impossible, pick 3!

I start off with Thai, Middle Eastern and Mexican.... but then 'Italian' pokes it's busted up nose in... and then I think BBQ and biscuits... then butter chicken and mutter paneer

your turn

ISO specific Bajan Hot Pepper Sauce

I love Taste! the sauces are great, but it's more about the greeting I received the first time I walked in there. "welcome to Taste, and YOU'RE welcome to taste anything in the store!"

it makes me smile just thinking about it....

Marks & Spencers Shrimp Prawn Cocktail Snacks?

There's a little store next to the Donlands Restaurant at Donlands (surprise!) and O'Connor that might be worth a shot ! I don't know what it's called, but it's there!

Did anyone go to summerlicious 2009?

I had a great dinner at Trevor Kitchen & Bar last night. I had the ricotta gnocchi which I loved (it was my first time having gnocchi). The whitefish, which was cooked perfectly and paired with a vegetable medley that included my beloved brussel sprouts left me wanting more - not because it was a small portion, quite the opposite, really - but because it was delicious!

creme brulee was smooth and silky with the tiniest, sweetest bunch of grapes I'd ever had the pleasure of eating - doubly good because it was a departure from the standard raspberry/strawberry garnish

we were a party of 7 and there were nothing but full bellies and happy faces!

Lemon Meringue Pie?

whoops! and the PIe Shack! 5 pieces of pie....

it's going to take a lot of beach volleyball to work those off! :)

Lemon Meringue Pie?

hahaha it's not that I don't meringue, it's just that I looove the lemon!

so. Penrose, Frangipane, Yitz's and just because 3 slices might not be enough, I'll even try The Tulip's version! :)

I"m gonna need some stretchy pants!

Lemon Meringue Pie?

hey everyone, I'm looking for a tip on the best lemon meringue pie in the city. Personally, I can do without the meringue, but my partner in lemon inspired crime is a meringue addict.

Preferably in the east end of Toronto and also somewhere a little lesser known - yeah, I could hit up Dufflet's but I'm hoping for a real hidden gem.

any suggestions?

chicken on counter overnight?

thanks for all the responses! I cooked it, but there was some part of me that just would not let myself enjoy it - I had three bites, then tossed it out. :(

it tasted alright, but that could have been the jerk seasoning. I heard somewhere that that is one of the reasons that places with hotter temps have spicer cuisines - to cover the taste of rotting meat. that's putting it in the most simple terms - but it makes sense...

has anyone else heard that?

Panzerotti

I haven't had one in years - but Bene's Pizza at Coxwell & Queen was my ultimate indulgence... cheap and enormous - they were $4 then and you could customize them but then the cost adds up - deep fried deliciousness....

chicken on counter overnight?

hey guys - I'm a moron. I took two boneless chicken thighs out of the freezer last night, tossed them on the counter and forgot about them until this morning.

they would have been out for 8 hours, defrosting time included.. Do you think they'd be okay to eat?

I can't even give them a smell test because I rubbed them down with Jerk seasoning before I froze them,

good Fish & Chips in Financial District?

can you believe I wasn't able to get out for lunch! so on the way home I stopped at British style. I am intrigued, however, and have plans to go with a friend this Friday!

good Fish & Chips in Financial District?

the pumpkin seed crusted halibut sounds delish - but I think I'll wait until a more refined moment for that!

most of the lunch places 'round here have overbattered fish - I was hoping for a solid recommendation... I think I might take grandgourmand's suggestion PJ O'Brien's ...

good Fish & Chips in Financial District?

Hey - I answered a post last week about fish and chips and haven't been able to think of anything since. Unfortunately, I am not going to be able to hit any of my favorite places today but I would push an old woman down a flight of stairs and kick a puppy for some fish 'n' chippy goodness!

The thing with fish and chips is, if I have BAD fish and chips, not only will I eat it all and be unhappy, I'll have to go out tomorrow and buy (and eat) it all over again from British Style.

Can anyone recommend a place? I'm at King & York, Metropass in hand....

Best Fish and Chips in the city?

nope - not Duckworth's. It's called Malt 'N Salt and i spoke to my friend - SHE lives at Morningside & KIngston Road, but this place is at lawson and Port Union or something? I don't drive and I"m usually too busy thinking about the deliciousness to come when we're going there! fish&chips junkie=me

Duckworth's is alright - a little skimpy on the fish....

Toronto's Best Chicken Wings

The Green Dragon on Kingston Road at Victoria Park has great wings! they're enormous, and flavourful hot - not just heat hot . There's also Wiseguys at Woodbine & Danforth, I haven't been in a while, but I've put many a pound back over the years...

Best Fish and Chips in the city?

British Style Fish Chips (Coxwell & Dundas) my personal favorite! delish. thick piece of flaky moist halibut, crispy golden yellow batter, just greasy enough to satisfy the need, but not enough to give you gut rot.... *sigh*

If I'm out in Scarborough, my friend takes me to some spot near Morningside and Kingston Road - the fish is smaller, but still tasty...

I desperately need fish 'n chips now.....

What Kind of Cooking Show Host Do You Prefer?

I see what you're saying about her humour this season and yes, she was rather stiff in the last. I just liked the prim nature of the first season. it's almost as if some producer said, Laura. we like it. it's a good show, but we need to make it SEXY. d'uh. food IS sexy!

a travelling Laura Calder? interesting..... maybe give her a few more seasons to get a bit more relaxed onscreen first

What Kind of Cooking Show Host Do You Prefer?

ANYONE but the Neely's.
I think they're a great couple, but "the Spice Fairy"? blech. .

I like Laura Calder, French Food at Home - she seems to have a touch of the theatre in her and I like that she's a bit romantic and geeky and eats with her hands... They kind of sexed her up which took a bit of the shine off her, but I still love her!

I have a not so secret crush on Guy Fieri but watching him stuff his mouth full of the food on Diners Drive in and Dives grosses me out. not to mention his silver AND gold accessories... :)

Ina Garten makes me laugh with her a-huhuhu - huh-huh huhuh laugh - it's so breathy and upper crust-y.

NIgella. *sigh* I just want to be in the kitchen alongside her...

What Kind of Cooking Show Host Do You Prefer?

Chef at Home is campy, but much better than Chef at Large. Yeah, his at home show is full of pauses and *flavour* but at least he doesn't glare at the fridge like he does any time he listens to someone - that cracks me up every time! My thing is his 'no recipe' schtick, yet he always manages to have exactly the right ingredients - I would like to see him do a show where he says "I've got mustard, some leftover chicken, and blueberries" and somehow make something nice.

I could also do with a little less Gabe....adorable, yes, but if he isn't served with a sauce of some sort, I don't need to see him.

thanks everyone - I was sure I was losing my mind on that one

I'm not much of a baker, but when I don the apron for my Christmas baking this year, I'll be reaching for the instant stuff!

What was your favourite restaurant that went downhill after they solidified their status

The Rushton. :( it made me so sad last time I went... they got rid of the beet salad and put 'stinky salad' in it's place. Who writes that on their menu.? Stinky salad. ugh. I didnt' realize that it I should take that so literally. lifeless dressing, 2 or 3 tiny pieces of walnuts - heck even the blue cheese was lame. it takes a special skill to take the taste out of blue cheese. Plus, before they used to add a nice little steak to the side, now it's a few pieces of beef - already sliced... call me crazy, but the few times that I indulge in a steak I want to cut into it !

poor presentation, slow service... it used to be our little celebration spot but now it's just so depressing....

dinner out while 'cleansing'

Thanks everyone - I ended up "working late", running home, eating the mixed bean, tomato and kale soup (better than you'd expect really) in my fridge and skipping the dinner portion of the festivities all together.

they're all great suggestions! I was so caught up on "Coxwell & Danforth" that my brain stopped working properly. Mocha Mocha would have been perfect! Relish would have been great, too, had we more people, but it was only two of us...

thanks!

melted chocolate

I've been told many times to make sure that water doesn't get into my chocolate when using a double boiler or else the chocolate will seize and become grainy.

but then so many people say to add a tablespoon of fresh brewed coffee to your chocolate to bring out the taste.

I apologize to coffee lovers everywhere, but I'm thinking brewed coffee isn't much more than water ...

how does that work exactly?

dinner out while 'cleansing'

so I have volleyball tonight at Coxwell/Danforth and have been asked to suggest a quick dinner spot beforehand.

I'm cleansing which means no empty carbs, no saturated fats, limited dairy and all I can think of is:
Quattro Regazze (pasta)
Thai on Danforth (meh)
El Sol (time restraints)

IS there even anything else around there?
