Kosher Ikura and Masago in LI/Queens?

Ikura (the larger roe) and Masago (the smaller roe) are definitely available for the kosher community in Long Island and Queens (many sushi restaurants and caterers serve it). But i cant seem to find ANY fish store in the area that sells it. Anyone?

Kosher Zone Chefs

terrific review! my wife just signed up, and i wanted to get a sense of ppl's experiences with it. so far, she believes its working for her. she is using it to lose weight, so i suppose the whole grains issue isnt a big deal for her, but that is interesting to note. she agrees that the portions are small, but she is so pleased by the "gourmet" aspect that it doesnt bother her as much. plus, she is happy that their "diet plan" allows unlimited salad, so that helps fill her up.

we havent had to deal with customer service so far, so i cant comment on that.

i guess she wont be interested in the other option (which im assuming is http://www.kosherdietdelivery.com/), bc she prefers the most tasty meals possible and the ability to change meals over customer service and whole grains.

thanks so much!

Kosher Zone Chefs

Can anyone post a review of the diet plan offered here:

thanks!

Kosher Prepared Pesto

ive actually been looking for a pesto sauce that is more mayonaissy. basically, the sauce bistro deli uses for their "bistro special" sandwiches. its a chicken sandwich, with grilled veg, and pesto sauce, but the sauce is mostly mayonnaise, i think. does anyone know where i can get something like that in a supermarket? ive tried using regular pesto and mixing it in mayonnaise, and it wasnt even close!

New restaurant on Union Tpike: Piyaz

my lunch there yesterday was terrible. i got the "lunch special." for 12 bucks it was one plate with a small salad, french fries, and FIVE tiny baby chicken pieces. i know that lunch specials are usually smaller than an entree size, but FIVE tiny pieces? it looked like a joke! the french fries were soggy, and tasted like the oil had not been changed for months. 12 bucks! unbelievable. ill never go back.

Fresh latkes and cheese blintzes in Nassau/Queens

bagel boss's blintzes are fried (crispy outside). their blintzes are fat and oily. too bad...

Fresh latkes and cheese blintzes in Nassau/Queens

Where can i get freshly made latkes and cheese blintzes in the Nasau County or Queens area? i like my latkes thin and crispy and my blintzes soft (not fried).

Thanks!

Kosher Vending Machines

Just tried a panini from one of these machines at LIJ Hospital. I wasnt desperately hungry; just curious how it would taste. It was $6.50 and wouldnt take bills larger than a $5. i used exact change, so im not sure how easy it would be to get all that change out of the little coin-change slot were u to put in two 5s. i got the schwarma on a baguette. the other options were chicken or 2 hotdogs in a panini, and maybe something else but i cant remember.

it took two minutes to heat up. it came in a stapled parchment paper bag, with a sticker that said, "OU KASHRUS GUARANTEED IF STAPLE INTACT UNDER THIS STICKER" or something like that. the bread was crispy and tasty. the schwarma was spicy and not too fatty. it wasnt bad. definitely salty and probably had a lot of preservatives, but it was way more edible than i expected.

i dont understand how fresh it is, tho. is it that meat that can be left on supermarket dry shelves that have chemicals preserving it until its heated up, or is it a refrigerator in there that requires new sandwiches to be put in every week? i dont know, and it bothers me to think about the possibilities, but in a crunch, i know that it is at least tasty and edible...

Recommended Discoveries at Pomegranate?

Their fresh, homemade mazerella! Love it!

Bagel-Store -Like Sliced Nova

oh good. looking forward to hearing from u...

Bagel-Store -Like Sliced Nova

i hope u are not talking about the long, large package of costco's kirkland brand lox, bc i dont think it matches bagel-store quality lox, but lemme know if u are talking about another brand...

Bagel-Store -Like Sliced Nova

ive tried costco - not much better than acme and the like. doesnt have that thin, oily consistency that (so far) i can only find in a bagel store... but thanks for the suggestion...

Bagel-Store -Like Sliced Nova

i should have been clear about requiring a generally accepted hechsher - fairway's brand has one? ive never tried theirs.

Bagel-Store -Like Sliced Nova

I love the taste and texture of lox (sliced nova) from a bagel store, but its way too expensive for me. So, i end up buying the packaged lox, but it simply does not taste the same. The slices are thicker, the edges are crustier, etc... Has anyone found a great brand of packaged lox, that rivals a bagel store? Acme is just OK, Trader Joe's is just OK, but I still havent found something THAT good. Anyone?

Pninat Hamizrach's marinated beef

ok, even if no one knows any recipes (im persistent!), does anyone know of an alternative restaurant that serves a similar dish?

Freshest/best quality kosher sushi in NY?

darn - never heard of fumio, and after searching on google, it looks like a NJ restaurant. not worth the drive from long island just for sushi! going to try prime grill as recommended tho...

Great Neck

I would not recommend cho-sen, not because of its quality, but bc the poster wants to avoid chinese. my recommendations in great neck would be colbeh for an expensive lunch or bistro deli for a reasonably priced lunch. i would steer clear of dannys bc their food is not always fresh. Since Natalie's closed, the only dairy option that is NOT pizza is la gellato, which is literally connected to la pizzaria. they make great paninis and desert crepes (very few, if any, other choices there though).

Wok Tov II in Great Neck, NY

well, that can only be good news bc the food was really bad up until now. the manager, moishe, was a nice guy, but the food was of poor quality, in small portions, served on styrofoam plates. nevertheless, they made great sushi, which was a real surprise. great neck's chosen village on the other hand makes nice chinese dishes but their sushi is terrible. strange...

trader joe kosher products

i dont understand. i just went to trader joes in merrick today and the only trader joes brand fresh mozzarella, under OU, was the marinated kind. still a long block, but firmer and filled with olive oil and spices. i am still looking for the old-fashioned plain roll or block of fresh mozzarella that trader joes only has under tablet-K.

trader joe kosher products

i think their OU mozarella isnt the kind in a log tho. maybe sliced? at least thats what im thinking bc i have never seen them sell a TJ fresh mozzarella log.

trader joe kosher products

Trader Joes is my favorite food source. my ONLY complaint is that they dont have any good kosher fresh mozzarella. they have a brand that is under tablet-K but that isnt a high-enough standard for myself and most orthodox jews. for some reason i cant find a mainstream brand under the OU or similar hechsher. the only fresh mozzarella i can find kosher enough is by jewish companies like "golan," and they arent that good, unfortunately.

Kosher Mango Salsa in Manhattan

what do u use this kind of salsa for? it doesnt sound like "chips and salsa"-use...

Meal Mart "amazing meals"

i come from a family that still believes diet soda could not be good for u bc of all the "chemicals" - - u can imagine what they would think if they heard about meat that isnt refrigerated or frozen. HOW is this stuff ok to eat?

New kosher dairy restaurant in West Hempstead

I have been eating at EJs Too almost every work day since they opened and here is my review:

ambiance: excellent. bathrooms clean. tables clean. spacious and attractive for a pizza place.

pizza: way better than hunkis, but that isnt saying much, bc i HATE hunki's pizza. nevertheless, their pizza is good. for some reason, tho, i rarely have found a fresh pie just come out when im about to order, and i wish i would, bc i love a fresh slice, before the bottom gets crusty from the reheating oven. if u go into elite pizza in great neck, and ask for a fresh slice, they will gladly let u wait for a fresh pie to come out instead of forcing u to take one of their remaining slices from an older pie. most other pizza places, including ejs, unfortunately, get annoyed at this request, and snap back, "this one is fresh; it just came out," even though the cheese has obviously congealed and needs to be reheated... whatever, that's just a personal gripe.

other foods: i havent tried much, but my coworkers who join me sometimes have always had pleasant experiences with their various dishes. i really like their salad bar. 2 sizes, with any ingredient you want, for reasonable prices. places like dairy king make u pay more for additional ingredients! they also have a $1 soda fountain with free refills, which is great.

all together, i give this place a 7 1/2.

Tenderloin steaks

i guess i will try that, since i never changed the water, and the water idea was the only thing ive heard so far. and yes, the salting is necessary for the kashering process. i also spoke with the butcher and he said he doesnt tenderize mine either. i just assumed he did, since the owner of an old restaurant once told me his "sino steaks" were tenderized and it was the same cut of meat. i assumed that kind of meat is always tenderized, but i was wrong. thanks paprkutr and everyone else. (i still dont know why this butcher calls his skirt steak tenderloin steak?!)

Tenderloin steaks

hm, im looking for a way to draw out some of the saltiness, not mask it with sweetness. i really like barbequing the steak with no marinade, enjoying just the taste of the meat and its saltiness. and id like it even more if it were just less salty - not necessarily sweet.

Tenderloin steaks

weinstein5, im pretty sure u have it right. machine tenderized and very salty sounds like what i am eating. im not quite sure why he calls it tenderloin then since it is a glatt kosher butcher. i know that it is sometimes also called sino steaks (when marinated in a sweet/tangy souce). but, as my original post questioned, how can i make it a little less salty? i heard there were some methods out there, but i cant seem to find anything other than cold water, which didnt work so well.
