perhaps someone else would chime in re. prices and selection.

Five Guys Burgers - Coming to Montreal !

4th june Friday after 5 at Five Guys

smallish line-up of about 5 people, place was 80% full.
The small burger , no cheese , no bacon ;with a selection of a few toppings, yes the beef patty tasted good- not organic or free range taste but much better than chains.
Liked the fries- moderaty crispy , and reasonably salted- regular portion was large enough for one.
Free refills on drinks
So the bad was the bun- bottom toasted but top cold. As well it was mushy, perhaps due to the fact that it was wrapped up fast and the moisture made it soggy. I have very few toppings so those were not the culprit.
I like my onions sauteed or fried, these were grilled ( in the toppings)- hence a bit crunchy for my taste

Crisp/salted! Peanuts (in shell) to be found in a box- piled on top of a stack of potatoes sacs- self serve

Interestingly the place was teeming with people who were taking pics. of their meals/menu and the mayhem- and mailing them-
the power of social media!!!!!!

your feedback on the gmo vs non gmo tofu-
looking any other compnay that supplies non-gmo tofu! (besides Horium)

'Sunrise' products-more widely available; says their products are non-gmo but not labelled as so, :-0
" Due to certain retailer regulations, we are not able to label our products as non-GMO."

any truth to that........

looking for kebab -e-koobideh

thank you polymatheus
I did notice that the rice served at Al-taib is cooked in he rice cooker, it is quite fluffy though (perhaps the addition of oil makes it stay separated...)

They did tell me it was basmati- although i was skeptical, and you confirmed that it was not.
care to share a brand name of the rice, that I may be able to pick up.

probiotic yogurt starter (local in Montreal)

thank you SnackHappy
I edited my answer post - as this company makes 2 types of starters, one which seems to have more pro-biotic benefits- but that one can only be used in their machine.

Great tip on buying a yogurt for a specific type of culture- to use as starter, although I make yogurt 2x /week, at home, and reuse the same starter over and over. Buying a fresh starter each time, defeats the purpose of saving money.

Seems like jury is still out whether home made yogurt can maintain the ALL the beneficial culture (see my first post web query)

probiotic yogurt starter (local in Montreal)

updating my own post
found 'Yogourment' starter in Loblaws @Nuns' Island , yogurt isle

seafood @ Montreal Chinatown

My foray into eating fish for its Omegas' (after being vegetarian for 20+years), leads me into trying NON SHELL seafood (allergic to shells).

Somehow buying frozen is easier - still getting used to the fishy aroma and I find buying fresh is more difficult to swallow later (no pun intended) . Closet to me is china-town.

Any recs. for brands that are good price/quality ratio- but most imp. health benefits. I would be steaming/ baking/broiling/non stick cooking the sea foods.

(reason it is in the Qbc-board- as Chinatown in Montreal=China block=smaller variety available in other bigger city Chinatowns)

thanks

Question about buying whole wheat grain in Montreal

hi
check out lamilanese.com
http://lamilanaise.com/anglais/produitsboulanger_en.html
they seem to have wheat in their list of products for bakers.

also the following (no info on products in English)
http://www.corporationdumoulinlegare.com/produits.cfm

cheers

Looking for paneer!

OP- u are right.
Paneer is paneer (and I am a tofu die-hard)- plus very difficult to get the same texture in homemade as in store bought-specially when frying the cubes e.g for matar paneer.
if can find Nanak's (from Vancouver); here in Montreal- IMHO - best !!!!! also non frozen is the best as it retains more moisture vs. frozen that becomes more chewy when defrosted and then cooked.

Need Help

I second the Indian recipes with the spinach/beef combo. Palak and Saag are generic names for spinach in Hindi/Urdu.
I have also had spinach with stir fried beef in Chinese restaurants. Can't remember the resto names. !!!

Two quick questions

Angostura Bitters

Laval recommendation for a Vancouver visitor

A bit late but my thanks to all those who took time to reply- and to post links and names of restaurants. Here is what we did.

After a pit stop @Adonis; we went over to Restaurant Karoun. Service wise efficient. Was a family run , mildly busy place on a Thu. evening ~8 pm. Generous on serving pita with a side order of hummus.
we ordered a quails platter (~10$), mixed meat platter (~24$), and a regular kabobs platter.
The quails came as 4 in a plate -charred and spicy in a tomato base 'masala' (for the lack of a better word)-excellent.The mixed meat had mixed reviews- the chicken skewers type kabobs were soft and juicy- good spicing, but the chunks of beef(not ground) ? kabobs were tough and chewy , really bad. Salad and accompaniment were hum ho:- taste wise and quantity wise. NOT GOING BACK- unequal price-quality ratio for me.

Omda was great- as a fan of French crepes-this was a sensory experience. The nutella/nuts crepe and the custard crepe -dripping with honey (their best seller) were made in front of us-soft yet crispy- melt in the mouth. The sizes are 4" x8", rectangle -yup- one is often enough for 4; along with mint tea. Most of our neighbors were doing/having fruity seeshah- which scented the atmosphere-pleasantly. Crowd was mixed with loud teenagers- /business couples-bearable. Absolute must- even if just for the experience.

thank you Humbert
looked them up and food reviews seems to be good, just the service seems iffy but we being East-Indian; have the same nonchalant approach to customers :-)

I am also considering taking him out for 'Ribs"- ?- if Lebanese does not get picked as the first choice.

Anyone recommend a creperie nearby for dessert!

Laval recommendation for a Vancouver visitor

A downtown purist-sheepishly I must admit- never been to a restaurant in Laval
My days in Vancouver motivate me to choose a Lebanese rest. for my visiting friend (meat eater)
What else can i choose from.!

Thanks

Reheating chow mein?

for those odd chores- microwave comes to mind
Although I do not have a micro, hence I steam them- in a sieve/colander suspended over some water ( not touching the water container- sorta a double boiler)
