2011 - What are you Drinking!

Bergstrom Chardonnay "Old Stones" 2009 - Not to sound trite, but very Burgundian-- lots of apple and pear fruit framed by flinty minerality. Pretty ripe, but not at all fat. Really nice juicy profile, and well-integrated toasty wood notes.

Puech-Haut Prestige 2009 - This was infanticide... but Baby Huey style... man this one is a monster. Huge, dark, rich, mineral... Fair amount of wood, but I have a feeling this'll be a rockstar in another couple years.

Excited to drink Stoller SV Pinot 06 tonight with some grilled tuna... beautiful day here in NC.

Gourmet Kingdom (Carrboro) issues?

I went for lunch after reading this, just to see for myself-- it was every bit as delicious as before. Had the Red Chili Beef Tripe and it was terrific.

Seeking "must visit" NC barbecue joints

Seconded- both Allen and Sons and Wilber's. Would add Clyde Cooper's in Raleigh as well.

NC, Triangle: Ting?

Nope-- but it's one of my favorite places on earth. Have you been to Allen and Sons in Tunapuna (I think that's where it is?) Barbecue chicken joint... delicious... and my wife and I love the connection to Allen and Sons here... too funny!

NC, Triangle: Ting?

Might want to check out Compare Foods in Durham as well if you're not wanting to limit yourself to Ting at a restaurant. They've got a ton of Jamaican/Carribean products... including all the Trini stuff that I'm always craving...

Kickass seafood market in/around Carolina Beach?

yeah-- i did do a search. i've tried some of the places that were suggested, and found most of them lacking... so i figured i'd try again. blackburn brothers sounds intriguing though. thanks for the tip!

Kickass seafood market in/around Carolina Beach?

Hey fellow hounds-- tried this last spring, on too short notice. I'm headed to Carolina Beach in July for a week. Looking for off-the-boat fresh seafood in the Carolina Beach area. IE, not HT, Food Lion, etc... somewhere that supports local fishermen and has the best seasonal stuff. Anywhere like this exist? I'd really like to get my fill before the oil kills everything...

Thanks in advance!

Who has best fish tacos in Triangle?

Big fan of the ones at Dos Perros.

Piola in Raleigh

I mean, Bojangles, Golden Corral, Fuddruckers, and now Piola are 4 of the last 7 places you've mentioned. Seriously.

Piola in Raleigh

NO offense, but do you eat anywhere but chain restaurants? There's an awful lot of great independent restaurants around here.

Farm To Fork 2010 Triangle NC

LLM-- you won't be disappointed. my comment over and over again last year was "man, I've been to a lot of these things, and I've never been blown away by the food... until now." they had some seriously baller stuff going last year-- it was a blast. i can only imagine they'll keep the ball rolling this year.

Headed your way...

Thanks, all... and cornFusion-- you're right about why I'd be going to CK. Looking like Eastern Standard is the way to go...

Headed your way...

Hello all-
I lived in Boston from 99-02, and am returning with my boss for the Eric Solomon portfolio tasting 3/1 and 2. We are, at the moment, going to Blue Room for dinner (I used to work there and I love the wine list... and Troquet is closed). Looking for drinks/wine bar for after dinner-- preferably t-accessible, though not a huge deal if not. Green st. comes to mind-- is Central Kitchen still as good as it used to be? I know that B-side closed... thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Sunday Brunch in Raleigh/Chapel Hill?

i thought nofo was awful when we went. haven't done brunch in raleigh but i hear that raleigh times and poole's are where it's at.

2010 - What are you drinking?

2005 Ch. Coupe Roses Minervois "L'Orience" and 07 Minervois "Granaxa." One of my favorite Languedoc producers-- these are their Syrah and Grenache based top-end cuvees, respectively. The Orience is tightly wound and sinewy at first, but fleshes out and blossoms beautifully after 20-30 minutes. Really great acidity and a pretty beam of minerality running through the middle of the palate. The Granaxa is softer, riper, with the oak treatment a bit more evident (also fairly young, so there you go)... bit like a really good rasteau. Fantastic stuff on both ends.

2010 - What are you drinking?

Just picked up some of the 07s... won't be laying a finger on them for some time. I like Charbonniere a lot myself.

How About A New What Are You Drinking ?

You and me both. The Bourriquot was one of my favorite domestic wines.

2010 - What are you drinking?

Estezargues CDRV Sinargues "Andezon La Granacha" 07-- crazy value in 07 rhone, and drinking beautifully right now (though I suspect that if i could stop guzzling it, it'd hold up for awhile, too...)

Also been grooving on Mibal Ribera del Duero, Bachelet Monnot Bourgogne Blanc (all declassified Puligny fruit... and tastes like it), and Sella and Mosca Cannonau Riserva 05.

Momofuku owner/chef David Chang dinner at Lantern in Chapel Hill

I agree. I have to confess, I'm broke as a joke, and I was still trying to get a resi.

Durham NC restaurant recommends?

Have to agree with Lulu on this one... Nana's has just been too damn inconsistent the past few years, and Fearrington is nothing short of highway robbery. In Durham, I love Watts, all the Roxboro Road taquerias (esp. Comales and Superior), and Saigon Grill (esp. Canh Chuah, crepes, and the bun with spring rolls and grilled pork). Federal I might try now that the smoking ban has gone into effect... I just couldn't enjoy my food there before.
I still need to try Mami Noras.
Vin Rouge, when they're on, is as good a restaurant as one can find in the Triangle. Same goes for Piedmont, although I hear more and more frequent rumblings of bad meals from people I trust. Too bad, because I love that place.
I have heard bland reviews and raves alike about Revolution, though I haven't been myself. A good buddy of mine eats there fairly regularly, and he adores it.

Help with bourbon & cider cocktail

feeling flush, huh kevin?

Recs in Harvard Sq?

agreed on Cambridge 1 and Chez Henri... specially if you can get in the bar at CH and get the cuban. I live in NC and dream about that sandwich.

What were your 'discovery wines' of 2009?

I absolutely adore Cepparello.

Beef back ribs... but not really grilling weather.

that makes sense. will take that under advisement. thanks!

Beef back ribs... but not really grilling weather.

Hey all-
Raided the deep freeze this am to see what my frugal little hands could find, and found a rack of beef back ribs that I had intended to grill this summer, but overbought. It's a little gross and wet around here today, so I'm not much feeling like standing outside all day.

Thinking of doing a latin-style braise, tomato based with chiles and coffee like I've done with beef shortribs, but haven't braised this kind before. Any other suggestions/tips?

Super Wok in Cary NC: How I love thee

Do they have english translations on the chinese menu? or do you have to point? this sounds intriguing, and i've heard lots of good things. might be worth a trip from CH.

Good, but wondering if this is the best sushi in Durham/CH area?

cervisiam is right... i haven't forgotten *that* much! :)

Good, but wondering if this is the best sushi in Durham/CH area?

Agreed! I took 3 semesters of Japanese in school and have forgotten more than I learned. I'd REALLY love to do this, though.

Triangle NC area Top 5

Is it me, or are 3 of those chains? I know 4 and 5 are, just guessing on 3. Come on, bro.. Get out more!

Mine-
1. Superior for tacos lengua and consome de borrega (although my favorite place for consome was called taquito d'oro- it was a truck (NOT the bus) outside the old buckhorn market, and I haven't found its new home)
2. Fiesta Grill for whole fish and Caldo de 7 mares.
3. Poole's Diner for, well, anything
4. Jujube on an "on night"
5. Saigon Grill for Canh Chua and pork crepes

Sommelier snobbery - why do 4 star restaurants refuse to list white zinfandel?

umm.. maybe i'm misreading you here, but that's not what whiner was saying. check the prepositions: 'from Napa' and 'in Napa' carry markedly different meanings. if you got the joke, then by all means tell me to shut up.
