Best Burgers Miami 2012

Just got an email today outlining the DB Offer with this link:
https://app.e2ma.net/app/view:CampaignPublic/id:12450.12774727121/rid:140eb327bf6c652a48654608728a13e4

It describes the app choices, the main (you can get a mahi sandwich if you aren't researching the burger), and desserts. Plus wine for $35 at Lunch OR Dinner - pretty "spiceworthy" deal a few months early.

Yardbird's Midnight Chef's Table Series

Wasn't there, but mentioned it here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/518767
I'll update that thread with your review.

Gulfstream Village Park in Hallandale -- any good eats?

We've never met, but you must be in the same 'hood as me CF!
I could WALK to Pilar. You should try the Pizza place I mentioned up-thread.
And on a related note, the $5 Tuesday special was reintroduced under new ownership at Racks (not relevant to the OP though - sorry).

Gulfstream Village Park in Hallandale -- any good eats?

I got that groupon too, and I could practically WALK to Pilar from my house, so thanks for the tips (I need a good LOCAL spot).

The Sicilian oven opened a few doors down (also tried it on a groupon), and the pizza was pretty amazing - I'd even put it above Anthony's.

Hog Snapper in Stuart?

You might get some more help on the Florida board (this one's just SoFla).

Lead me to a great wine-pairing dinner in Delray

Cafe Maxx!: http://www.cafemaxx.com/calendar.asp

One of the FLL wine stores always has events there, and I'd get on their mailing list: Wine Watch. I would drool over all the amazing events they set up, but never went to because of distance (something that won't be a problem for you).

Your interest in wine pairing dinners has inspired me to dig up and update an old thread on the subject, that I hope will keep some momentum.

Wine Dinners in Dade/Broward

If I were able to stay up this late, I'd check out the "Midnight Chef’s Table Series." at Yardbird.
$40 seems like amazing value (kind of a thing with me), including a specialty cocktail:

"Every Friday at midnight, starting May 18th, join Chef Jeff McInnis, some friends and some soon-to-be-friends around a communal table featuring a continually changing menu of inventive and inspired takes on traditional Southern fare. Each week will bring a special “Guest Chef” and a new “Chef’s Choice” meal served family style to a limited number of guests. Set in the midst of all the action in front of Yardbird’s open kitchen, the dinner will also include a culinary matched cocktail prepared tableside. Chef McInnis will be on hand to visit with guests, “talk food” and extoll the virtues of sourcing from local farms, foragers and fisherman. Be sure to check our website and social media regularly for a schedule of future special guest chefs, sommeliers and bartenders."

Upcoming Guest Chefs:
Dean James Max (3030 Ocean) - June 15th
Paula DaSilva (1500 degrees) - June 22nd
Timon Balloo (Sugarcane) - Date TBD

Wine Dinners in Dade/Broward

I'm recussitating a very dead thread because I think chowhound would be providing a real public service if it would pin a thread with "upcoming events" (something a little broader than wine dinners). The only other way to learn of upcoming events is to sign up with each restaurant's email list, which can lead to a little too much email - chowhound could help out, and in that way distinguish itself from yelp, urbanspoon, etc.

What made me think of this old thread was a "Craft Beer Dinner" I went to last night that was so outstanding, I wish there had been a pinned thread to post it to and have more beer-loving hounds attending.

The dinner was at db Bistro Moderne (boloud's Miami outpost in d/t Miami), and I was pretty overwhelmed by the quality of the food, the service, the pairings, and the value (tickets were sold in advance including tax and gratuity, for about $70). Each of the 4 courses had several items served "family style" for a total of 9 different menu items (highlights of which were scallop ceviche, oyster gratinee (outstanding), kabobs with 3 meats (served on a bed of couscous that was actually cauliflour - wow), the famous db Burger (which I was by that time to stuffed to enjoy) and 3 amazing desserts.

The beers were from Tampa's Cigar City brewing, and they were outstanding and plentiful.

Anyway, I'll try and post more UPcoming events, not past ones.

Best Burgers Miami 2012

I don't think I could come up with 10 to put in order, but
BLT Steak had one of the finest I've eaten in Miami. Good onion rings to go with too.
Shake Shack is at or near the top.
And while it's heresy to suggest a chain, I really have to admit 5 guys just seems to come together well.
Smashburger is a solid product but not as good as those other 3.

I just tried the super-luxe db Bistro burger this week (stuffed with foie gras and short rib), and I didn't love it, though the french fries were probably the best I've ever had (and I say this having had Bourbon Steak's duck fat fries many times). I do have to praise db for having some of the best service in the City, and everything other than the burger impressed me thoroughly.

I read somewhere that the db burger, which I think costs $35 on its own, can be had during burger month with a glass of bordeaux, an app and a dessert for an extra $1, so if you are in the area Chowfather, this is the time to try.

South Beach lunch spot with ocean views?

You are definitely doing the Chowhound tour of Miami!
for ocean views Scarpetta will fit the bill, as would Blue door at the Delano.

Don't hurt yourself.- hitting all those places in 4 days is a gastrochallenge on par with the Nathan's hot dog eating contest.

looking for recs in miami and Key Largo

Hounds like to see a little research on the part of the poster, but since I'm off to Largo myself next week, and had to do some legwork myself, I'll throw you a bone on that segment of your request: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/761950

As for "Miami", I think you need to narrow it down a tad. Read through posts on the board.

Pre theatre in FLL (near BCPA optional)

Follow up: parking at 6pm near the theatre was busier than I thought, and tarpon bend cited a 30 minute wait, bit the wahoo and massive onion rings I spotted from the bar got my interest (the rings are a special request item I'd highly recommend - I started a thread here looking for something exactly like these years ago). It was great!

BOGO drinks were key also, but 3 pints didn't make "Billy Elliot" any more tolerable - yick.

Recommend the dinner, but not the show.

Pre theatre in FLL (near BCPA optional)

No real food preference, but proximity would be nice so I can park once and not have to scramble for a spot when everybody else is arriving.

I think that leaves me with PL8 and Tarpon Bend, which is too bad since both Johnny V and M17 both have happy hour on Saturday (not PL8).

Pre theatre in FLL (near BCPA optional)

First time out without kids in such a long time I'm embarrassed to say, and I want to make most of it.
Have 8pm theatre tickets at Broward Center, and not up to speed on the area as I used to be.
Market 17 is a possibility, but the menu doesn't excite me (5-7pm half-off apps and drinks though).
Himmarshee has been reincarnated as PL8 (apparently), and is similarly not inspiring me.
Considering Johnny V and YOLO also.
Any thoughts?

Bulk almond paste

Not Costco.
Did you check restaurant depot (595 and university area)

Yakko San half price lunches in December

There was a sign in front of YS's new space at the intracoastal mall saying lunch was half price, so I thought I'd check it out (hadn't been since their relocation).

AMAZING deal: Soup or salad, choice from 6 mains (or 2 sushis) and three sides (tempura, noodle salad and 4 pc Cali roll) for about $6!!

Hostess said its until 12/31.
I'll be back!

Substitute for NAOE?

Wow - what happened to naoe? I never got a chance to go, and now it's going to disappear?

Looking for great dessert for Thanksgiving

Siciliano's Frozen Custard (Hwd. Blvd at 441) makes an awesome frozen custard pumpkin pie that has become a bit of an annual tradition for us, but you have to pre-order them (and this year: a deposit?!). 954-985-8050.

I'll swing by on the way back from Delaware Farms, where everybody seems to get their turkey.

Rack's Italian Bistro

With great regret I must report that the awesome $5 pizza deal on Tuesday's was just discontinued (received the disappointing news from the hostess upon arrival yesterday - a Tuesday). A real loss for me. If we had stayed we would have been the only customers, so things do not bode well for the future at racks.
Burger Wednesday's and lobster Fridays are still on, but for me it was all about the pizza.

Risotto

Escopazzo has a different risotto each day, and the waiter says they can get quite exotic (blueberry, which I had once in Stressa, Italy, is one I'd like to try here).

There is a risotto course as part of a 5-course wine menu I'm going for on 11/17 ($60 - a deal!) - I will report back.

Cervecería 100 Montaditos

I love this place. Went today on day off of school with the kids after jungle island.
All the little sandwiches very tasty. Would love to come with adults for 10 bottles of beer for $15 on Friday night. Would REALLY love to come with anyone on Wednesday when everything is a DOLLAR!?

This isn't too near home (aventura), but it is set to grow like a cancer (see story in South Florida Business Journal):
100 Montaditos is making big inroads into the U.S., with South Florida serving as ground zero for its expansion efforts.
The Madrid-based fast-casual restaurant chain, which has more than 200 locations in Spain, is expected to open its second location at 1502 Washington Ave. in Miami Beach later this month. Its first location is in the Shops at Midtown in Miami.
100 Montaditos sells tapas-size sandwiches – about 4-and-a-half inches long – that cost from $1 to $3, depending on what’s inside. Offerings include everything from peanut butter and jelly to duck mousse with minced olives. Salads, appetizers, beer and wine are also on the menu.
Chris Barney, a broker with High Street Retail USA in Miami, has been working with the company on its expansion plans. He has signed a lease in the Fountains, at 801 S. University Drive in Plantation. Another is set to open in Pembroke Lakes Square, at 11007 Pines Blvd. in Pembroke Pines, and 100 Montaditos is also taking space at 230 Miracle Mile in Coral Gables where Baja Fresh is located, but will be closing.
In lease negotiations with six locations in Miami-Dade and Broward counties

Romeo's Cafe

Been about a year for me, but man I love that place. Very intimate, chef greets everyone and has amazing memory - highly recommend. Like naoe, but for Italian food.
Lunch used to be $25 I think, such a steal, but recently almost doubled to $45.

Polo Grill reopened in Vero Beach

I was really excited to see an old favorite return to its old space at the south end of "town" (walking distance from all the beachfront hotels and resorts). It's at 2855 ocean drive, 32963.

Polo grill existed about 3 years ago, was replaced by "pearl" which closed after about a year. I'm not sure how long polo has been around this time, but I recognized the owner from a prior visit (also runs Lemon Tree a little further north), and many of the staff are apparently veterans of the earlier incarnation.

As evident from the website (www.pgvero.com), there is a lot of emphasis on their (very) early bird, and it is a winning formula we loved as much in 2011 as we did in 2008. My wife's flounder piccata was a real winner, and my veal Marsala was great as well (with salad and ice cream $15). We also loved the wine at $3.50 a glass during early dinner.

Welcome back polo!

Dim Sum in Sunny Isles

I went last 2 weekends, and could not figure out why everything cost LESS than expected. The 20% explains it. Reexamination of the bill also showed the discount broken out at the bottom. Nice surprise. where did you find out about this?

I think I was there the first time on the same day as Lax2mia: it was raining, there were no carts, we ordered, then there were carts. The second time (yesterday) the place was packed and we had to wait for a seat. When was the last time that happened here in the off season! On this second visit it was strictly carts, NO menu. Not even offered.

Since we already have some favorites (hand pulled mushroom and chive noodles for one), it was disappointing to not have the chance to order, though I do like spontaneous opportunities to see and try things I might not have thought to order.

I think the best option would be hybrid: some from menu, supplemented by cart. Next time, if no menu is offered (cart only), I will remember to order a few items from memory, then go cart diving.

USDA prime steaks in Miami?

The OP was about dry aged more than prime, but thanks.
FM sells something called "Hereford" which I asked the butcher about, and was told it is not prime (it's just a marketing gimmick for choice, as far as I can tell).

USDA prime steaks in Miami?

I used to get grass-fed at Lorenzo's too, but they stopped selling it years ago.
This could be a new thread, but: where do you get grass fed?
There is an Argentinian market on West side of Biscayne in aventura (south of the mall), but I've never been in it (though I might, to see if they carry it).

Do Any Real Sub Shops Still Exist In The Dade/Broward Area That Still Make Old Fashion Subs?

La Spada's has been a Zagat's "best bang for the buck" for as long as I've lived here.

Sub Center on Hollywood Blvd, just east of 441 (next to Siciliano's frozen custard, same ownership)

John's Hero King in Hallandale

This is exactly the kind of stuff I come to chowhound looking for: chow!
So I immediately drove out for the signature roast beef sandwich. The $8 hero version of the sandwich was well-proportioned, and the meat and fried onions were great. I hope it's not heretical to say, but next time I'd want it a little more "wet" (steak sauce, or another topping that is probably available but I didn't inquire about).

I think the black tar sauce is an acquired taste - I did a search after to figure out what was in it and nobody seems to know. I think I tasted tamarind? it wasn't bad, but it wouldn't hurt to have a horseradish mayo, or an HP sauce in the mix as well.

I'll also return to try the meatball hero.
