Weight Watchers

The trouble with WW is that you can't buy any of the foods in Turkey where I am resident. I wish they would make a diet that just included natural foods that you can get anywhere in the world.

Are there any UK specific cooking forums or online communities?

Well I live in Turkey (am home in UK for holidays now) so that is even less relevant to me! Can't find about 90% of the stuff they mention on these boards but you can always adapt I suppose. The trouble is that if you google any subject...cooker...technology...you name it...the most posts are from the US. I think it's because the internet probably started there and everyone is online.

Christmas Pudding Emergency! (MSP)

Not very difficult! I was out at Waitrose today and there were loads of them...as there are in all supermarkets...eg Sainsburys, Tesco, Asda etc etc etc

What am I not getting about CHOCOLATE?

eheh thanks Kelli:) It's a horrible sounding 'word' though isn't it?

What am I not getting about CHOCOLATE?

What does 'meh' mean? Is it American slang?:)

What am I not getting about CHOCOLATE?

I don't think koreankorean is so unique. My student and her mother don't like chocolate. I am really indifferent to it without actually disliking it. I know quite a few people who aren't that keen on it in fact. Yes, it could be to do with some people preferring savoury flavours to sweet or that their taste buds simply aren't wired to the flavour. I remember that when I was a kid I liked it more so that could be something to do with it.

What are cupcakes?

They look really beautiful with the flowers on them:) Almost a pity to eat them:) I think lemon is probably the most delicious flavour that goes with sponge cake!

What are cupcakes?

maplesugar you are right:) I was being a little bit provocative, sorry! I am from the UK and like the other person wrote; our 'version' of cupcakes are actually called fairy cakes - not so smooth looking and not with a domed top and not with the buttercream topping. At most they had a bit of icing on them. I think really the buttercream is unnecessarily calorific - the cupcakes as I see them on various websites certainly would be enough fat and sugar without that buttercream.
Dunno if I agree with you about there being 'room' for cupcakes; I recently did a pre-contest diet that lasted 14 weeks and in the last month was living on eggwhites and carb-free, fat-free whey powder. But I suppose everything is relative; certainly for a man who expends a lot of calories etc I dont think one cupcake, buttercream or not, would do much damage:)
It is simply ironic to me that the Sex and City programme should suggest that those anorexic actresses consume them:)

What are cupcakes?

And do you think any of those skinny actresses in Sex and the City lets a morsel pass her lips?:)

What are cupcakes?

Fattening!!!

Best storebought gingersnap cookie? (moved from Home Cooking board)

Those biscuits are by McVities and are called Ginger Nobs. I always bring a pack back with me whenever I go home to the UK. Along with Rich Tea and HobNobs our biscuits are the envy of the world:))

protein shakes and bars...

Even when I was near contest weight my trainer preferred meat over protein shakes. About a month pre-contest I just had whey isolate with no sugar (that rather defeats the object!!) or anything else added. Hardly tasty but at that stage of the diet I am hardly thinking about taste! It also depends in which part of the world you live in. When I started training seriously about 6 years ago I was living in Italy and it was hard to get any supplements at all, let alone compare one type with another. The only plus with protein shakes is they are portable and easy and whey is fast-uptake but otherwise I think they are just gimmicky, moreso all the supplements, not to mention VERY expensive if you take a lot of them and different types. I am sure primeval man had plenty of muscles and was low on body fat:)

Muesli and other healthy granola

I completely agree with goodhealthgourmet. I currently live in Germany and am a fan of Seitenbacher's breakfast muesli which is without added sugar etc. When Jordan's crunchy (granola) came out in the UK a long time ago I was very excited and used to eat it in handfuls and then I found out it was really fattening and worse than chocolate! I lived in Italy for a while where it was even hard to get oatmeal and am going back to the mediterranean so I shall miss all these things:)

Ovaltine Candy bar?

I've never seen it in the UK but I saw it down the road on sale in a drugstore-type place and I live in Germany.
