Great Cakes in Greater Dallas

although there is a lack of top pastry goods here, i must steer you to society bakery for red velvet, have compared to sprinkles and the cake at society itself is excellent moist and full of flavor.. the icing is buttercream if you like that.. but i am sure they have other selections, they do a huge wedding business. have tried their iced shortbreads, but so far i go to tart for iced shortbreads.

Two nights in Dallas - sushi

you must go to sushi sake... i have tasted several of the places below that have fancy distractions, but if you are for the food, sushi sake will impress you than anything from stl. everything is very fresh and price point is decent, and most of the time there is a wait on weekends.

Where can I find the best Asian noodle soups in Dallas?

i am also a fan of pho mac.. i wish more people would go there and give them more business so they can expand to west plano. their vermincelli bun dishes are the best so far, and i have had bun in west and each coasts. i have had pho at pho bang, pho 95, pho bistro, bistro b, and so far have gone back to pho mac. irodguy, pls advise of other 'better' phos

New here from NYC...need help with the following:

wonder if you've found your fav milk yet.. if not.. i am glad you are picky about your dairy as i was when i first relocated to the area.. after extensive research.. i tried local dairy schepps- blue label, was ok, better than the others,, even braum, then i discovered promise land.. it is the best in the area.. lucky layla has awesome drinkable yogurt.. old town creamery i think is the name (sprincreek and coit, next to starbucks) has the best freshly made waffle cones..

Veggie bibimbap in DFW?

yes, thanks for posting.. this one has the frog picture, and on my credit card statement, it actually reads 'frog restaurant'. their marinade for bulgogi is also very good.. i've also tried the tofu restaurant next door, very good, their speciality is the crunchy rice soup, tofu very soft and fresh, but I still prefer the flavors of spices of kimchee jichae from kalbee house.

Veggie bibimbap in DFW?

I recently had the rice dish at the 'frog restaurant' next to h mart in carollton and was pleasantly surprise by the dish.. good amount of crunchy rice at bottom.. not so many varieties of side dishes as kalbee house, but foods been great each time i've been.

Plano casual dessert

IF you are in the mood for custard, not sure if you have that down in houston, but sheridan's is pretty good and always busy. preston/gaylord
anything with caramel is great.

[DFW] West Coast Transplant ISO substitute to Trader Joe's

thanks for the post lsutxtiger, great to see another rootbeer fanatic! I first tasted the heavenly drink while on vacation in PNW pacific NW, thomas kemper is also good, there is another one from maine that is close to HW, but HW is still the best! I was in a panic when I had to move to the area and no one carried it, then I called the distributer b/c the stuff is bottled in ft worth, most places, CM plano, tom thumb, are always out when I go, so if i see them, I stock up!

DFW - Chocolate Cake? Petit Fours?

Society bakery, IMO, has the best tasting chocolate cake so far, i like their cake better than sprinkles.

Dallas: Kalbi help, please!

dear txseoul08, glad to see interest in korean bbq.. i wish the fad would hurry up and get hot here in dallas, it even made it on the hills, korean bbq that is.. my rec would still be my favorite kalbee house in carrolton, it is by far the most asthetically pleasing.. meaning they did not skimp on the decor, and the array of pancha is the most so far, they are always super nice. please see previous posts about this place, i have not tried chosun myself though, i just keep going to kalbee house for kimchee chigae and seafood pancake and bbq of course.

[DFW] West Coast Transplant ISO substitute to Trader Joe's

my thoughts exactly, maybe someone from trader joes will read this and open one here! trader joes and pinkberry and it will be perfect. i miss the garlic fries and steal cut oatmeal!!! let's see that is why folks think i am mad for driving away a half tank of gas to get food, CM for bone in ribeye, fresh cut flowers, and harry weinhard's root beer and fancy italian yogurt. WFoods for grass fed beef, and organic chicken. I would suggest WF frozen section you may find something tasty but of course not like TJ's. Then off to Asian World or H mart. Now H mart fit's one of those 'take out of towners' places, but of course will be more heavy on the asian side but great variety and prices. Going to TJ's website to vote for a dallas location now...

First try at Chinese on Greenville in Richardson

I am very excited to hear of more explorations of taiwanese shaved ice.. i've been looking for a decent one along with beef noodle soup, but that's for another post.. just wanted to say that jeng chi also sells their own frozen dumplings in the front.. they are awesome.. a bit more pricey than grocery store, but i like them since they are heavy on the dough part of the dumpling and that is all i eat. Back to shaved ice, yeah May's is a bit scary at first, but i think they have been around for a long time and folks go for the economical small eats dishes, i have not tried the kings noodles shaved ice, b/c i am always too full, but have recently discovered the shaved ice offerings at taiwan cafe plano, 15th/ independence. Cash only, but you can get it to go and it is like a giant snow cone in a cup. You can mix and match all sorts of toppings but I usually go for taro root, red bean, or green mung bean, oatmeal, almond pudding, and of course condense milk on top. ps.. Pinkberry is copying shaved ice like they discovered it.. I think the workers can be nicer, but i guess they are busy enough that they don't have to be super nice.

Where to get best piece of 'pizza by the slice'? DFW

Hmm searching for a place, north if possible, that offers great pizza by the slice, where one piece really does the trick. I don't really have a preference of style of pizza, just that they would offer pizza by the slice and after the reheat, is still delicious.. a place that i wish would branch out to this area is 'one guys' from lubbock.

Thanks!

Great Chinese? Frisco area???

Jalli52, please, if you want to impress your friends and family, bring them to Yao Fu Zhe in Plano, Park/Preston?. I suppose if you've never tried PF Chang's, you should go, but only as a comparison, not as the end all be all of your 'chinese' food experience. For the same price range, you will get much better food, atmosphere (antique furniture from china, and service (linen service and fancy chopstick rests) at Yao's. IMO chinese food should be prepared by chinese people at the least. just my humble opinion. thanks!

Great Chinese? Frisco area???

yes, i am also waiting to go back for the duck, but reading donna's recs, i should go to houston for the best?? so what is your fav, or the best so far, HHS hot sour soup? I have tried many, first BBQ, the BBQ place by may hua, then was surprised that Mr Wok had one with great balance, sour and spicy and good meaty substance for ingredients.. thanks!

[Dallas] If You Love Crepes

Thank you Analisas mom for your posting.. you beat me to it! I've been wanting to share my reviews of this place since the weekend.. I went on account of reading someone else rec here on chowhound.. i think it was a thread from the 'dallas desserts'... boy am I glad i went. I am so happy to find a place to satisfy my weekend crepe needs. I hope everyone will try out this place, it is right off of the George Bush, very spacious, indoor and outdoor seating. I will agree that service is not the normal sit down place, but the chef's view was to make it very french, were you can linger and eat for as long as you like and not feel like you are rushed to give up your table. Some items like the soups can be self service if you want, again to keep the cost, in the front of the house, down, explained by chef. But if you are a true foodie, then you will want to go here to experience the food, it is really on point for a delicious crepe. I also tried the 'french' salami, very nice. The chef shops locally to prepare his dishes and is very enthusiastic to share his ideas on french food and health. I wonder if he will still provide crepes at the state fair. We will definitely be regulars. Thanks!
