Lompoc Eats

Every time I visit with my friends in Lompoc, we go to this place in a funky strip mall called Thai Cuisine. They might have some dishes that could be what you are looking for. I've ordered a halibut that was cut in chunks, deep-fried in this light and crispy coating and drizzled with a sweet and spicy sauce. My mouth waters just typing this. Another time I had a seafood soup that was outstanding. It just seemed like every piece of fish or shrimp in that dish was caught that day and brought in just for the soup. I didn't care much for their limited lunch menu, so if you can find this tiny hole in the wall...try it for dinner.

Brunch in San Diego, Broken Yolk or Harry's Coffee Shop?

The Coffee Cup was great for us last week. I go there for one thing: The Breakfast Tamales. They come with a side of black beans sprinkled with a wee bit of jack cheese and an "unscrambled" scrambled egg. (Translation: they don't cook the egg until it's brown, yuk.)

Just a heads up: although they do seem to make the most of their skinny joint by placing bench seating against the open windows, suck in your gut as you needle your way past the tables to avoid scraping somebody's fruit bowl.

Arterra in San Diego- Has anyone tried it recently?

The only time I've had a meal that truly missed at Arterra was between the time Chef Bradley Ogden left and before Chef Jason Maitland began. A miso-marinated piece of cod was so salty, I couldn't eat it.

Other than that, I still feel that the ground chuck burger w/garlic fries, the maine lobster papardelle and the iceberg wedge salad were spot on. Our martini's (manhattan & vodka martini w/blue cheese stuffed olives) also hit their mark. There were 5 of us at the table and we dined on a Thursday evening...no complaints, all-in-all, we had a very nice time.

Chicken Fried Steak

Well, I'm no connoisseur of chicken fried steak, nor am I from the south...but I had a very tasty version of it at Luc's Bistro in Poway last month. I was informed by a couple people in my party that CFS should be thin. My CFS wasn't. It had a crispy, salt/pepper coating on the outside, and when I sliced into it, the juice from the steak ran down the side. It came with mashed potatoes and wilted spinach. This portion was too big for me, so I took half of it home and ate it the next day...and you know what? It tasted even better. If this isn't what CFS steak is suppose to be...well, I don't care. I'm spoiled by this version and I'll go back and have it again should the Chef decide to showcase it on his specials menu.

San Diego Little Italy Recommendations?

I really like Enoteca Style because not only have I dined and dashed there, other times, I've lounged and lavished in their warm and ultra-cool bistro. Uber-crisp paninis (I can vouch for the Ash panini w/the garlic aioli and italian meats, provolone and pepperocinis) and the Chimay on draft really hit the spot. I'd like to go back and try the Lost Coast brews from Humboldt County. Don't pass on the dolce: vanilla gelato, strawberries and basalmic vinegar. The only other place that I like to have this dessert is at Wineseller & Brasserie in Sorrento Mesa, which is a pretty penny more.

BEST BURGERS IN SAN DIEGO

Brunch @ The Farmhouse Cafe today ....and as much as I really like their lemon-ricotta pancakes, I opted for their seriously FINE FHC hamburger. The crispy frites and bread & butter pickles on the side took it over the top.

If you are thinking of visiting The Farmhouse Cafe this week, our server said they are taking some well-deserved time off to enjoy an extended Labor Day weekend:
- Closed for dinner Sun. 9/6, - Wed. 9/9.
- Dinner service resumes Thu. 9/10 @ 5pm.

Knockout Punch

This punch bowl is just asking to be tipped over...especially with "knockout punch" being served in it.

The punch recipe sure sounds yummy though! I'll just have to try it!

Viva Pops - Normal Heights

First time I tried the organic strawberry and the mojito pops was at the EarthDay fair in Balboa Park, that day was a scorcher too. It's great just to be able to go to Normal Heights now and enjoy all that icy goodness.

SD: New restaurants on Convoy

We were on Convoy @ Green Tea House Saturday night and saw a line out the door for the Crab Hut. It's peaked my curiousity, but I still haven't tried it yet.

The new Crepe place was crowded with families and youngsters alike, as was the "parking lot from hell".

There is a Luong Hai Ky that just opened on Camino Ruiz in Mira Mesa. Maybe they folded their stuff and moved to that location. I too, did not cross the street to see what "Phat" was all about.

Changes to The Downtown/Uptown Dining Scene

3 girlfriends. 5:45pm. Bench seating and already the place is getting crowded. This was on a Thursday evening.

Ice-cold (we're talkin' frigid) Sapporo on draft and fish so fresh, it does this magical disappearing act with the rice. Simple salmon nigiri, double-double tuna and yellowtail....amazing Ikura gunkan (like little explosions of salmon essence and gelatinous seawater blisters ... )

Good call Steverino. Goooooood call.

Report from Positano

Chowhounders! You are all so fabulous. Not only did you help me find the place I ate at so many years ago, but you've given me NEW and ENTICING places for me to visit and swoon over in Positano! Wow, you are all so good at this food "thang"!!!

Agsotr got it right. It is LO GUARRACINO. Just looking at pictures of their "ristorante, bar, pizzaria on their website brings back very good memories. Luscious mozzarella, incredibly flavorful basil and tomatoes, that crust! Oh my, the crust....and arugula that is delightful. Lo Guarracino was quaint, welcoming, warm-hearted and relaxing. A lovely time, a lovely place.

Maybe all of us can meet up someday here? Wouldn't that be fun?

I did a search on both Il Capitano and Don Alfonso's.

Thank you Theresa, but actually, Il Capitano isn't the small trattoria we visited for our 2pm lunch....but now I am much more intrigued about the 2 restaurants you mentioned Theresa, and will see if we can go to both on our next trip to Italy. Both sound so good.

So, that's the name! Il Capitano! Thank you!

Well, I always try to follow a fellow CH's tip and the next time I get to venture over to Positano, I'm going to try Don Alfonso. But, if I do go, could you give me some examples of what you had to order? What is their speciality? Is D.A. a trattoria too or more of a restaurante?

Fiesta oaxaqueña opens restaurant (Escondido)

Supported El Tejate yesterday for late lunch (around 3pm)...first time going and was NOT disappointed. Very, very delicious and yes KR - I agree...the beans are crazy good. What a unique flavor and texture. Creamy black beans with that slight bite of licorice....the delight is as you say, "earthy richness".

We were a group of 4 and we all shared plates of steamed tamales, chile rellenos w/ground beef & raisins swathed in fresh and flavorful tomato sauce, chicken enchiladas w/mole...but, what knocked my socks off were the shrimp tacos that were not on the menu. The server (sorry, didn't get his name - should've because his service was exemplary) recommended the shrimp tacos and he was right on with this tip. Sauteed shrimp, salsa, the beans, the crazy-good, stout corn tortillas...every bite was dripping with flavor...I inhaled mine in record time. I ordered an ice-cold horchata that was made that morning and it was cinnamony refreshing and not too sweet. Count me out if horchata is too sweet. Gosh, I hope they stay.

Si, si, si - esta es muy Gastronomia Oaxaquena! ;)

Report from Positano

You know, THAT is the way to travel. I absolutely loved reading this post. While I was on a solo journey to southern Italy in 1996, I met up with a couple of American guides from the traveling company BB&R & they took me to a restaurant high up above the sea. We walked around a corner, walked some more and then, walked up around another corner and voila! There was this quaint, cliffside, family-owned restaurant that as I remember, served the one and only pizza I had in Italy that was fabulously delicious. It was thin, properly crisped with wood flavors embedded into the crust. Blanketed in fresh arugula, sliced, ruby-red cherry tomatoes and a sprinkling of sea salt, I swooned! How could I not? I was relishing in the fact that I was eating this most wonderful pizza while gazing into the mediterranean sea and drinking some of the best brunello in one sitting...
...and although the moment is unforgettable, unfortunately - I have forgotten the name of the trattoria.
