Best Carrot Cake in the mont/bux burbs?

Soon tabora will be open in Lansdale. That will be so convenient. I've been eagerly watching their progress next to the kugel ball.

Forest and Main --Ambler Brewpub

Thanks for the scoop JK. Got thirsty just reading your review.

Costco Food Finds - 2nd Quarter 2012

Maya Kaimal coconut curry simmer sauce with coconut milk and ginger. Very pleasant, would buy again but there is no way this is medium heat. Very mild which worked for my dining companion. Got this at the montgomeryville pa Costco in the refrigerated prepared food section.

Thai Aroma - Blue Bell

Wow, great and extensive reviews! Sounds very different from Thai Orchid, a favorite of mine. I will have to get over there. Thanks all!

Mothers Day in New Hope/Lahaska?

Your mom sounds like she was a smart sensible woman CP. On the other hand if you helped cooked the barbecue it was probably very tasty. Jfitzpatrick if you really want to go out would you consider ending up in Doylestown? I've had two very nice meals there in the past week, one at Thai Spice (elephant shaped teapot that pours out of the trunk!) and Five Guys. I know it's a chain but the Doylestown one is very good.

Mothers Day in New Hope/Lahaska?

That is what I was thinking too cwdonald. Mother's Day is the busiest restaurant day of the year.

Thai Aroma - Blue Bell

Mookle we are eagerly awaiting your review. I'm probably headed in that direction tonite.

Thai Aroma - Blue Bell

Oo could always use another thai place. Thai Orchid is tough to beat though. I'll ask around.

Costco Food Finds - 2nd Quarter 2012

Got some frozen shrimp pad thai (four pack) in the frozen food section. Authenic Asia or something. The shrimp is at the top separated by a cardboard partition so you can nuke it a different amount of time.
I ended up frying the shrimp and then tossing it in with the nuked noodles. I wasn't expecting much but was very happy with this tasty easy dish. I'm glad I have a chest freezer as the package was fairly bulky. I'll be going back to my Montgomeryville Pa Costco for more, these are fast easy and light as well as delicious. I did squeeze some lemon juice over my portion. I can't resist playing with my food.

Trying to remember name of old Lansdale restaurant

I know Rhapsody was there cw, now it's montella's or something. I need me some Shelly's bakery.

Trying to remember name of old Lansdale restaurant

But what was it CP? All I can think of is West Point Inn. Remember helping out there once with my mom in the kitchen, she did it as a favor one night and brought me along.

The Challenge of Going Vegan

Glad you found something that worked for ya MM! I guess I've always been interested in food and diets. Back in the day I tried the Stillman Diet for quite awhile. My dad was always giving the macrobiotic diet a shot. Made for interesting times.

The Challenge of Going Vegan

I've been experimenting with a raw vegan diet but taking it very slowly. My thoughts are that this diet is easier to follow in warmer climates and during the hot season.
I think it can be socially isolating. I'm gratified to learn that bananas are available almost everywhere, wal-mart, gas stations with 7-11 type places attached, and even sold at my local mall at the jamba juice before it went out of business.
Some people can just switch over right away but I think it's best to take it slowly, especially if you choose the more extreme raw vegan route. The reason I say this is because of the de-tox factor. This is just my opinion, I'm a noob, but when you eat raw vegan your body doesn't have to use nearly the energy to digest your food, so it starts working on trouble spots that need fixing and ridding your body of toxins. When you go into de-tox mode this can stir up a lot of feelings, some of them sad. I think people go vegan or raw vegan, start to feel bad and go right back off. Getting past the initial de-tox period can be rough. I would advise patience and good timing for the initial attempt.
One of the most hard core raw vegans I know makes a point of eating cooked vegan once every one or two weeks so that his body doesn't get too sensitive. He calls it the canary in the mine theory. He thinks that if your body becomes too clean you will react to everything.
The movie Simply Raw http://www.amazon.com/Simply-Raw-Reversing-Diabetes-Days/dp/B001BKLCCS illustrates the adjustment period where people feel wonky very well.

Smoke Daddy's is baack. Next weekend only

Nice CP! Musta missed you by an hour. Did you hear SD's new ring tone? Boiling up the bones now from my smoked chicken. Can't decide if I will make creamed chicken and mushrooms over toast or chicken pot pie. I wish he would return for good. Since his new digs are near Atlanta I told he needs to call his place down there Sherman's BBQ.

Born Again Chowhound

Every once in awhile life reminds me of who I truly am. Like yesterday. It's been a long dreary winter here in the Northeast even if mother nature was very gentle with us. My favorite take out eatery Smoke Daddy's closed permanently and moved operations to Georgia.
But for one weekend only he hitched his monster smoker up and drove back to serve up his barbecue to us salivating hounds in the Philly area. When I got his happy happy email a week ago I started planning what I would order and how I would play with the leftovers.
Apparently a lot of hounds from Lansdale Pa and beyond felt the same way. I left a pot of lemons boiling on the stove when I left the house I was so excited. When my friend and I got there there was a huge line and he was too overwhelmed to take phone orders. Luckily I remembered that I left the stove on. I don't live far away so I quick went home to turn it off, feeling like an idiot.
I was foolish and didn't eat much all day so I would be nice and hungry for the precious offerings. I only live about three miles from the Lansdale Eagles club where Smoke Daddy was holding court, and I've been there many times.
I was so hungry and flustered by then that I forgot how to get there. I had to back track twice.
I wish I was kidding. The line of worshipers was even longer and I heard whispers that SD might be running out of his magic brisket.
I finally got my precious bundle: brisket, pulled pork, and smoked chicken with collards, smashed potatoes and mac and cheese. Because I had to wait so long the food tasted even better if possible, and yes I managed to figure out where I lived without mishap!
I spent the rest of the evening in a contented stupor, feelings of well-being washing over me. I'm going back today, he sold out of pulled chicken and barbecue beans. I cannot believe how crazy happy I feel. I had simply forgotten how much of a chowhound I am. I'm not alone.

Smoke Daddy's is baack. Next weekend only

Cash only but it is so worth the slight inconvenience. His response was overwhelming yesterday. So much so that he was not able to answer his phone. And traditionally friday was his busiest day and thurs used to be quiet.
He is keeping it simple this trip, bbq, sides and ribs. Today I am planning on two pulled chicken sandwiches and two orders of bbq beans. My friend John is gonna get the fat daddy four meat sandwiches.
For the bbq you can get sandwiches, platters or by the pound. One woman had a 300.00 order yesterday.
At least SD knows that he ever moves back from GA hordes of bbq deprived hounds will throw cash at him.
He is at the back of the Lansdale Eagles Club outside. There is a big sign on the eagles club joyfully proclaiming his brief return. Bring a bit more cash than you think you will need because when the smell from his monster smoker hits you there is no telling what will happen.

Smoke Daddy's is baack. Next weekend only

Oh my! How I missed my Daddy! Everything was sublime but the smoked chicken was so succulent. Incredibly, he ran out of the barbecued beans so I had to double up on the smashed potatoes. Woe is me! I'm getting there early on friday, I want my damned beans!

Smoke Daddy's is baack. Next weekend only

Already planning my purchases for tomorrow ftarazu! I simply can't resist his baked beans. I'll be getting smashed potatoes just for convenience. I want at least one smoked chicken and I've already planned the leftovers. (if there are any) Gonna try the new fat daddy's four meat sandwich or something like that. Too lazy to bring up the menu he sent out. Might get the collards, they go so well with the smashed. I'll probably get ribs on friday and if I go on saturday I'm going as soon as he opens to avoid disappointment if he sells out. I'll be the one wrapped around his leg and whimpering for him to stay in Lansdale and not leave us again. I'm so looking forward to tomorrow night!

"No mom, you don't have to cook..."

What a lovely post gaffk. And thanks for starting this thread potato.
I think I will add something from my mom's childhood just for fun. My grandmother worked as a bookkeeper Way back in the day when most women did not work outside the home. So there was always sliced bread from the market at her house for my mom to offer her friend. But at the friend's house there was fresh homemade bread aplenty. Each girl thought the other one had it better.
A fast after school snack back in the day was bread and jam or if there was no jam the old reliable standby was bread slices spread with butter and sprinkled with sugar. By the time I came along as the grandaughter, my grandmother sometimes made warm delicious homemade loaves of bread and boy did I know to appreciate it.

Smoke Daddy's is baack. Next weekend only

It's no joke CP! Someone else posted about getting emails from SD. Not sure if that got removed or something. I stayed on Daddy's email list just hoping and hoping. I'm planning to go on thursday so I'll report back then. I would not advise going too late on saturday as he will be sold out for sure.
I fear a return of SD for good is too much to wish for but perhaps a warm homecoming might mean more visits. Would dearly love to get his smoked turkey for Thanksgiving again. /drool.

Smoke Daddy's is baack. Next weekend only

Aw man that would suck. No foolin' about great barbecue!!!!

Smoke Daddy's is baack. Next weekend only

A girl can dream CP! But his email heading says Creole Daddy's. No fried chicken this coming weekend but he will be selling smoked chicken. Have you ever tried that? It is yummy the first night but makes for such bodacious leftover fun. I've used his smoked chicken in tacos, split pea soup and on top of pizza, as well as in a chicken sandwich on whole wheat with mayo and avocado slices.
I sure hope you are right.

Smoke Daddy's is baack. Next weekend only

So I found a surprise treat in my Easter basket! Checked mah email and Smoke Daddy is a maniac, he is driving his monster smoker up from Georgia and serving up bbq and sides April 12, 13 & 14. He will be offering Steve the Meat Guy's Magic Brisket among other delicacies. I'm making room in my freezer now.

Starbucks Pet Peeve

That Starbucks is in an awesome old historic building in the heart of Doylestown and close to the courthouse. They probably don't wish to lose all the attorneys, judges and secretaries as patrons. Sounds like they are being penny wise and pound foolish.
They do have plenty of competition nearby. I miss The house of cheese. Warm croissants baked right there and good coffee only one size available. I think I asked for a Grande there once.
I like Nonno's when I remember to bring cash. Zen Den has coffee? I will have to check it out. I try to be careful around Zen Den because of Todd. :) Everyone knows Todd he is the mascot of downtown Doylestown. If you have any more problems at that Starbucks, Todd will surely sort them out.

downfall of chow

I'm a big supertaster fan and I like to leave appreciative comments but I don't like watching videos. I know it would be extra work to provide a transcript of the video but does anyone else wish for this? I might be imagining it but lots of his videos have zero comments and the readable reviews always seemed to have a few. Mostly positive too. Why has supertaster gone all video all the time?

Did you ever work at a fast food restaurant? [moved from Food Media and News]

I worked at Arby's and Jack's Steak House in Raleigh NC.
At Jack's I had a lot of trouble refilling the catsup and other condiments at each table in the time given to me for the job. My pet peeve was that the manager would keep us company when we all ate together after the lunch rush. She didn't eat but she sat and smoked while she chatted with us at the same table. Yet I got in trouble because I had a glass of water at my work station in the kitchen. This was back in the day.
At Arby's I wasn't warm and friendly enough when I greeted and talked to the customers. Introverts like me tend to not do well waiting on the general public. Sometimes they would send me home (and other employees too) on a slow night. Other times my dinner break consisted of five mintues of standing in the doorway to the kitchen scarfing down a sandwich while I watched for customers coming in.

Costco Food Finds - 2nd Quarter 2012

I finally tried the turkey and spinach lasagna with no fat ricotta in the refrigerated food section. Not bad at all. This was at Montgomeryville Pa. Forget the brand name and I tossed the packaging but I'll buy it again for the convenience. I chose to bake it in my convection toaster oven although the directions claim you can microwave it as well.

Lunch in Monrgomeryville/North Wales

Did you ever make it to the Tremont on halloween CP? Yeah now we have a Rite Aid instead. /sigh I think Thai Nadia is under new management, that's in Lansdale. Got take out from there recently but haven't dined in for quite awhile.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 1st quarter 2012 [old]

I get those too. Once I grabbed the wasabi ones by mistake. I enjoyed them but they were way too hot for my friend.

Simple Recipes that are Incredibly Delicious!

Thanks for this thread. Had to take a break from reading it, was getting too hungry.
For cold weather I love me some baked brie. I use TJ's puff pastry when they have it, but refrigerated crescent roll dough will do. Wrap a wedge of brie in the dough and bake at 400 for twenty minutes or so. I use a toaster convection oven so might want to tone it down to 350 or 375 for a regular oven. I like to use jam or premade balsamic cherry preserves, pecans, craisins and honey spread on the brie before I wrap it all up in the dough like a little present.
If all the baked brie doesn't get devoured immediately the leftovers make a great breakfast or lunch just eaten at room temp. /drool. For a savory dish I substitute some sauteed mushrooms with a little bit of garlic and onions. Then it is a ridiculously rich cheesy mushroom pie. Can't say how it tastes the next day as this version has never lasted that long.
