Flywheel coffee (upper haight)
Stopped in on Monday. Tasted like over roasted and bitter Martha bros. coffee. Style and cost of four barrel with the quality of mb or Peets. No thanks.
French? Cheddar? cheese at BiRite
Comte doesn't really taste like Cheddar - so while very tasty seems unlikely.
bahn mi for party
Although not the best bahn mi Lee's Sandwhiches seems capable of fairly high volume. Other then that I would suggest you just ask your favorite place. As long as you give them enough warning I would guess they'd be happy to put together a couple dozen sandwhiches.
I actually like old Bahn Mi the same way I like leftover pizza - while there's no argument that it suffers from sitting around somehow it can still really satisfy.
desperately seeking duck bacon
I saw smoked duck breast yesterday at the Potrero Hill Whole Foods. I actually think it's a fairly common item in "higher end" grocery stores.
Where can I buy authentic Spanish chorizo please?
I'm pretty sure I saw fresh on my last trip to Spain - but I'm not really a Spanish food expert. In any case, there's certainly a variety available in the stores there - from soft (and fresh looking) to quite desicated. I don't know how authorative this is but they mention fresh and dried here: http://spanishfood.about.com/od/spanishfoodfaqs/f/faqchorizo.htm
coconut oil that tastes like coconut
Yes sorry. I was replying to the olive oil portion of the post.
Where can I buy authentic Spanish chorizo please?
Bi-Rite sells a dry/cured spanish chorizo.

According to the USDA there are further distinctions between "Virgin" and "Extra Virgin" besides acidity.

Citron and glacee cherries
Saw fresh citron (to do your own candy-ing) at the Alemany farmer's market last weekend.
How to use a roasted pig knuckle?
Search for German haxe or eisbein recipes.
I've had the one from roil roti before as a main dish. Reheat it in the oven to crisp the skin. Serve with fresh german sauerkraut and potatoes.
Tres leches cake in SF?
Tartine sells it. Have only ever bought a slice but I'm sure they'd sell you more.
Restaurant to celebrate after getting married at City Hall
There are too many places that qualify without more information about what you like. Do you mention City Hall because you want it close by?
Within walking distance of city hall are Zuni and Absinthe both of which would work well for you as their presentation/style tend to be more "classic". Also within walking distance is Bar Jules (although the space is pretty small you can call for a reservation). All of these choices should fit comfortably in your price range .
Help me fill in the blank: Fleur de Lys, Incanto, ________?
If you happen to live in one of the cities you mentioned then maybe you won't find Ippuku to be "only in the Bay Area". But still only maybe. Relative to the rest of the country Ippuku is pretty unique (Yakitori places are still not that common even and Ippuku produces some well above average). Even in those large cities there are only a small number of places that compare to Ippuku - and that's a subject of debate. Anyway, I think it qualifies.
I recommend the Chicken tatare, not as a novelty dish so that you can brag to your friends, but because it's genuinely good and also it's hard to find.
Outer Richmond Chowhounding
I've tried several and they all basically taste like soda. Let us know if you find something different.
2011 Dungeness Crab
Once the season starts what are good times to go down to the HMB docks to buy crab? When do the boats come in and when are they typically sold out?
Important for me: Does the same hold on a Sunday.
Summer 2011 farmers market watch
I got some sunburned walnuts from Alemany last week as well and was actually shocked how sweet some of them were - almost like there was a dried chewy fruit burried in the nut - this is not the first time. According to some online sources the sunburned ones are supposed to be slightly bitter and are less desirable. This has not been my experience.
I hope the "secret" doesn't get out making the price go up.
Best Example from San Jose/South Bay not availble in SF
I like the sound of the Hue style vietnamese but don't really know much about what that means. Can you recommend some dishes that are particular/emblematic of Hue flavors?
Are either Darda or Chinjin far western style or are they still more northern style (like old islamic)? I really enjoyed to food in Urumqi and Kashgar (pilaf, grilled lamb, naan, samsas, chickpea salads etc.) and would love to find a place serving that cuisine.
Best Example from San Jose/South Bay not availble in SF
I'm looking for a place to lunch in San Jose/South Bay on Sunday afternoon. I'm thinking something that I can't get in SF (I don't get this far south all the often). Regional or other specialized Vietnamese? Obscure Ethiopian?
Question: What's the best inexpensive food available in San Jose/South Bay that's not available in SF or way better then what's in SF?
Mangosteen fruit
I've seen them in the Asian fruit/veg stores in Chinatown and at New May Wah in Inner Richmond. There used to be a seller at the Alemany farmer's market (selling CA grown mangosteens!) but I haven't seen them for at least several months (anybody have a report on what happened to the tropical fruit stand?)

I think the request is for lunch.
If you think of the nibbles menu as a bunch of things that you can order and share with multiple people (like tapas) it can get pretty substantial. I think Alembic is better and more interesting then a place like Park Chow (not that I don't also like Park Chow but it's much more standard californian/american vs. more modern californian cuisine).

While Alembic is a bar known for their cocktails it has pretty decent food as well. I don't think there will be a problem with teens if you sit at a table but aren't sure.

Il Cane Rosso in the Ferry Terminal also has excellent sandwiches if you're looking for something a little different this time around (not that you should - roli roti has one of the best porchetta sandwiches). The beef brisket is stellar. http://canerossosf.com/
Have you been to Tartine? Breakfast, Lunch, or Snack would work. If you're up for a picnic their bread is also awesome but has to be reserved ahead of time for evening pickup. I know. weird.
If you're looking for something different in East Bay Ippuku is a great Japanese yakitori place that's right by the Berkeley downtown BART station. Being by BART you can have as much sake as you like and still safely get back to the city. Everything I've had there is great and if you're into foody bragging rights they serve a raw chicken salad (with raw quail egg). I actually think that it's authentically tasty (as opposed to being a novelty dish). Surprisingly rich and unctuous.

Anyone use the Marin Sun Farms meat CSA?
surprise and serendipity vs. control and choice.
I think MSF is cheaper as well - the web site for Avedano's doesn't list prices so I can't compare directly but the "Roast & Braise" package from MSF is around $5.70/lb.

The spicing of the sausages is just not quite right for me - I don't have any on hand right now so that I can be more specific (and a much smaller quibble - it would be nicer too if they were just a little smaller so that there was say an extra sausage in a "portion pack" but the total weight was the same). That said, I usually order them if they're on special and keep them for fast last minute meals.
In general I'm very happy with the quality and price of MSF and regularly encourage other people to give it a try.
Not that anyone asked to be convinced but I really like the surprise of finding out what will be in the monthly box. When that 11 lb. leg of lamb arrived my first thought was "are you kidding me?". It was just giant. But it forced me to move a little beyond my usual recipes (and out of my kitchen). In the end we roasted it in one of the "Diablo Stoves" in Mt. Diablo park and made a day of it. Some pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/abak/6111062627/in/photostream
The trip was planned because/around the leg of lamb. The MSF box suprise made one of my best summer afternoons.
Anyone use the Marin Sun Farms meat CSA?
Regarding packaging - the stew meat usually comes in 1 lb packages and the roasts are usually deboned 2-3 lbs each. But that said, I did get an 11 lb bone in lamb leg and a huge 7 lb beef roast in my box one month. Chicken has been halved unless I special ordered it. Ground meat is always 1 lb packages. Steaks, chops are individually packed. Ribs are typically in 2-3 lb packages. Special orders like pig feet can be cut in half or left whole on request.
They are generaly responsive to any problems or questions over email.
Anyone use the Marin Sun Farms meat CSA?
We get Marin Sun Farms and are generally pretty happy with the quality and rarely have problems with the packaging. We get a 15 lb/month "roast and braise" package with no meat substitutions (So we get a mixture of beef, goat, pork, chicken and lamb). My one complaint is that there's too much lamb and goat and not enough pork - but there's always a mix.
I wouldn't say that they're the best butchers either and their finished products (like sausages) are good but nothing amazing.
Six months or so ago we got some of the premium cuts (dry aged beef, some pork chops) and they were nothing short of spectacular. Sweet, buttery pork chops, nutty well marbled beef. Something really special.
Cafe BaoNecci - Best Pizza in SF?
I'll have to try it for myself but the photo doesn't look that appealing. Gummy looking cheese and a dry cracker crust? What did you think of it?
Where can I buy collards and/or okra in San Francisco?
As others have mentioned collards are also available at Safeway, Wholefoods and pretty much every other supermarket in the city. Also probably all of the farmer's markets (Alemany, Ferry Terminal, Civic Center and the various neighborhood markets, I've seen it at the Castro and Alamo Square markets in the last month).
I've seen Okra in recent weeks at the Alemany market. Given the Asian overlap you might also check New May Wah and the nearby vegetable markets on Clement. I bet if you take a walk down Clement you can find both. If you don't find collards for some reason on Clement, walk over to 4th and Geary to the "Geary Farmer's market" which is more of a vegetable stand.
