Perry cider in NYC?
The fruit stalls at Union Square Greenmarket often have proper pear cider. Try Migliorelli or some of the others. I was told that orchard growers won't make pear cider if the pears have been very good that year, but only if there were a lot of bruised ones (fell down in windstorms, etc.), as they'd prefer to sell whole, pretty pears for more than the cider brings. I have no idea if that is true. But I bought pear cider from one of the Hudson Valley growers last month, so I know it can be found. And it's very good.

Not To Boast Or Anything...
Good suggestions, all. Thanks! I know we're all so cool about celebs in NYC, but he's the kind of recognizable one that would definitely be approached and possibly hassled, and as hostess I just want to make sure they can enjoy their dinner in peace. Dining at home is also possible, but only as a last resort.
Not To Boast Or Anything...
...but a big huge rock star friend is coming to town and we want to take him and his wife somewhere nice and quiet and untrendy where we can talk and they won't be gawked at or maybe even not recognized. Any thoughts?
Turkey Giblets For Gravy
I tried a couple of butcher shops, and also Associated and I think Gristede's, to no avail. Though I guess they might have been sold out. My mom was looking on Long Island and says she couldn't find any, but again, maybe sold out. Thanks for the tip!
Turkey Giblets For Gravy
Where can I buy just the turkey giblets to make gravy with? I usually get a whole turkey breast for the holidays, not the entire bird, as nobody likes dark meat and it's a waste. But you never get giblets with the breasts, and you don't get good gravy without them. And why don't they include them, anyway? The whole birds already come with them, so why shouldn't the breasts? Any ideas?
Thai Shrimp Pancake or Something
I don't know what its proper name is, but I've had it in several Thai restaurants in LA and Malibu: a wonton skin package filled with nothing but chopped shrimp, sometimes maybe a little scallion or chive, and I guess sauteed till it's hot. Delicious. But I can't seem to find it here in NYC, and not knowing what it's called doesn't help...any thoughts, group mind? Thanks!
Air Food
Any recommendations for food choices (bring-aboard) for a trip NYC-London? I haven't flown internationally recently, and am a bit out of practice. Plus do I have to eat everything up before I get there...not sure what the food import rules are, especially about meat. Not that there would be much left, most likely, but will the food police throw me in jail for half a ham sandwich?
Restaurant Quality Steak (ribeye)
I always get a nice sirloin from my local butchers (they cut it rather differently from most sirloins), anywhere from an inch to two inches thick. I liberally apply black pepper, finely ground (I hate crunching peppercorns) and either a good quality onion powder or previously half-caramelized fresh onions.
Then I pan-saute the steak over high-medium heat with about 2 tablespoons of butter melted in the pan. The meat gets the most gorgeous crust on it...flip after about six or so minutes, depending on thickness and rarity desired, and cook on higher heat on other side, being careful not to overcook the meat just to get another nice crust. Thanks to the butter, there will be plenty of jus in the pan, and a beautifully browned, crunchy steak, pink on the inside, to put it on.
Dinner in London: Paddington or Globe Theatre environs
I'll be in London this summer and am getting my (roast) ducks in a row early: can anyone recommend places to eat either around Paddington (staying at the Hilton) or near the Globe Theatre (going to a play on a Friday night)?
I am a lady boomer traveling solo and do not care for most kinds of the ethnic food found in London. English, Italian, Chinese, steak, all fine. Any ideas?
Looking for Linzer
Linzer cookies, linzer tarts, linzer pies...you know, nice nutty pastry with raspberry filling and sugar-dusted tops. I had the best linzer cookies of my entire life at Malibu Kitchen, but Malibu's a long way to go for some cookies. Any suggestions for NYC?
Far Far West 20's
Thank you for the suggestion and the editing info! I was thinking more of delis or coffeshops or pizza places, burgers or chicken or Chinese takeout or delivery...
Far Far West 20's
I've started work on the WES Drive and 25th Street... does anybody know anyplace to get lunch around there besides 'wichcraft (pretentious) and the corner falafel cart?
Sorry, make that "West", not "Wesr"...
Seeking a Lobster Roll In Lower Manhattan
Luke's just keeps getting better. Now they have not only some very tasty chowders and bisques, but grilled lobster half-tails, 3 for 15 bucks. I have learned to order the lobster roll with mayo only (very little) and not the butter (lemony) or seasoning (weirdly metallic). They're happy to do it your way.
Creekstone Beef, Retail
Does anyone know where Creekstone Beef is available for retail purchase in Manhattan? Thanks!
Ham - best butcher in NYC?
East Village Meat Market, on 2nd Avenue between 9th and 10th Streets. The beautiful hams are pre-baked, but you can heat them up again with a nice brown-sugar or mustard glaze...really, really good.
Cakes On A Plane
Well, that was the one good thing about airline food. Since it wasn't real food, it didn't smell,,,
Cakes On A Plane
It's disgusting, and people who commit such atrocities should be tossed off the plane or out of the theater. I had to force the flight attendant to reseat me one time, to get out of range of someone's sickening Mexican-looking glop.
But I was hoping for some suggestions about what to bring on board that would keep for a few hours and keep me fed and NOT revolt my fellow passengers...anybody?
Cakes On A Plane
No, no, I am the most considerate public eater in movies or on planes that ever ate...nothing EVER smelly or greasy. I am incredibly careful about that, since I hate it so much myself. I don't think a roast beef or corned beef sandwich and maybe some cheddar and saltines would bother anyone...
I wasn't sure what the TSA regs were on insulated bags. I don't think you can bring those freezer gels to keep things cold? But just a bag by itself might be okay?
And yes, it's JetBlue. I've only flown them short hops before (Buffalo, etc.) and didn't know what the food deal was for long-haul
Serendipity - Have to go, what to eat?
The frozen hot chocolate. The foot-long hot dog. Last time I went, they had a nice chicken dish with sliced peppers in a tasty sauce. The food isn't top of the gastronomic line, but it was fine for what it was.
It's hideously crowded at all times, but afternoons post-lunch aren't that bad. Sometimes I've walked right in.
Best Chicken Soup
Since the 2nd Avenue Deli moved away from around the corner, I haven't had a place to get decent chicken soup without going all the way to its new location. (Which I have done on occasion...)
Does anyone know a place for good old-style chicken soup in the East Village or roundabout? I saw a food story in the Times or News that mentioned Russ & Daughters for good chicken soup, but haven't yet tried it. Any thoughts?
Russ & Daughters - excellent
This was in the NYTimes, as I recall, or perhaps the Daily News, And there were pictures and prices. So I thought, well, okay then. Or are you just doubting the "really good" part, not the existence of such soup?
Cakes On A Plane
Well, FOOD on a plane. Can anyone recommend a place in Manhattan that could cobble me up a nice movable feast to get me from JFK to LAX? Without salmonella? I was thinking a Katz's corned beef sandwich: it wouldn't last more than an hour or two into the flight...do you think that might work?
Russ & Daughters - excellent
I read a review of NYC chicken soups, and it said that Russ & Daughters makes a really good one, which astonished me. Had no idea. Has anyone had it?
Katz's--A Disaster
Katz's hot dogs better than 2nd Avenue, also their corned beef. Fries and ESPECIALLY the potato salad, 2nd Ave for the win. I'm not a pastrami fan, but friends give it to 2nd Ave also. Either sandwich, you have to unhinge your jaw like a python to eat it.
Looking for Bloody Good Roast Beef Sandwich
This Little Piggy is good, but the beef is so well done it's gray and crumbly. Oh, and the beef stew is saltier than a, well, a very salty thing. Almost inedible. Hey, Piggies, if we think it needs more salt, let US add it, please...and the weird mayo on the potato salad made it totally inedible.
So yeah, bloody roast beef. You might want to buy some from the East Village Meat Market on 2nd Ave between St Marks Place and 9th Street, buy a nice roll from Moishe's Kosher Bakery on 2nd and 7th, and assemble your own sandwich.
Lobster roll sans mayo - where?
Adrienne, it was the downtown (2nd Avenue @4th Street) Mermaid, and the first time I went it was indeed dee-lish. But three strikes and now they're out out out.
Luke's Lobster, a smallish roll with an ample sufficiency of lobster as you like it. No tails, but claws and knuckle meat. Lobster is cold, bun is toasty warm. For 14 bucks it's most excellent.
Need a sure thing celebrity spotting restaurant
Chateau Marmont restaurant, Starbucks in Malibu shopping center, Ivy at the Shore, Tra di Noi and Neptune's Net in Malibu...
do you eat American style or European style?
Nanny always said "All joints on the table will be carved." So keep your elbows to yourself.
