Mintycake's Profile
The Burger's Priest - Queen and Coxwell
I've been to both BP and GBK and they're two different animals IMHO. BP was flavourful and juicy and lovely but too small for my appetite. I had the chilli cheese fries too and thought they were too greasy, but then again, that's the point of them. They were insanely busy, and it's very cramped inside - even though there are stools I wouldn't want to eat there. I got bumped about constantly while waiting in line. I think I'll stick to GBK - more variety on the menu, yummy onion rings, and closer to home. But BP is good if you aren't that hungry.
Teddy's Sports Bar (Leslieville) to Close
Is this for real? I walk by there all the time and it still looks open to me...
does anyone have a timeline? That whole strip is improving and if Teddy's goes it will make it that much better.
Leslieville ice cream and gelato
Hmm I wasn't that impressed with Cream. I tried the pineapple flavour and it wasn't very sweet at all. My husband had a chocolate flavour that had great depth of flavour though.
I do like Leonidas and the people are friendly there.
It might not be gourmet, but I usually get my ice cream at the Film Buff. They have the best peanut butter chocolate ice cream I've ever had.
O'No ir
I went to the O'Noir in Montreal. I'm not sure if it's the same in TO but it's a fixe prix menu that you choose from while waiting in the "lobby". You can have a drink at the bar when you're waiting. They then call your name and a blind waiter takes you into the dining room. It is pitch black in there, your eyes do not adjust at all. The food we ordered was good but I found it a bit awkward to eat not being able to see (we ended up using our fingers for a lot of it). I'm not sure if it enhanced the taste but it was an interesting experience and you gain a newfound appreciation for being able to see - as this is what it is like if you are blind. I believe some of the proceeds went to a charity that assisted the blind as well. Overall it's good to try it once but not sure I'd go back.
Sushi District - Queen E
Good news, they now have an application for a liquor license and have a building permit. Given that they looked almost ready to go back in April, hopefully it won't be long before they open. I love Sushi Marche but could do with a cheap and cheerful sushi joint in the 'hood.
Leslieville Diner
Agree. Service is friendly but they made some mistakes with orders (not ours but other tables), and the menu is basic. If I'm going to go to breakfast in the hood though I'd rather go up the street to Toast.
Worst in Toronto
Agree! I had a pea dish here that was seriously Green Giant microwave special. And the staff is obnoxious.
I actually have had some bad meals at Il Fornello as well...its unfortunate that it gets picked for business lunches a lot due to proximity to my office.
Oh and Wayne Gretsky's (another biz lunch). God awful.
Best Eggs Benny in T.O
I love the eggs benny at Toast...I made the mistake of deviating and ordering the flapjacks and was dissapointed, eggs benny is what they do best. I wouldn't call the service "atrocious" - it's a bit slow because they're understaffed and it's fairly busy.
My other fave is Niagara Street Cafe which others have mentioned...I'd go more often if I lived closer!
Sushi in the PATH
It's Acko lounge for sit down in FCP. I find it a bit pricey for the quality. I head east on King and go to Bikkuri (King just west of Church). Their sushi is good and it's a nice atmosphere. They give you a discount for takeout, too. There is also Sei Sushi at King and Simcoe which is OK...again, I think a bit pricey for the quality.
New Place on Queen East and Curzon?
It's now open! It looks like a bar/lounge type space. Not sure if they serve food. I walked by last week and it also had a sign that it was cash only :( It was pretty empty except for a couple of guys at the bar (who I suspected owned the place or worked there).
What I'm more interested in is the old Queen Cafe next door. They have a sign in the window that says "DINER, COMING SOON". Anyone have the scoop?
New Leslieville Restaurant
I had dinner there last Friday and it was lovely. As noted above, service was a bit erratic but apologetic and even my picky husband found something to eat that he actually liked! Glad to see a really reasonably priced but nice restaurant open in the 'hood. They also do take out but no delivery, so I might be enjoying my lemongrass pho at home next time. I just wish the chairs weren't so uncomforatble, but if you can snag the benches they're nice. Yummy mango shakes too. We'll be back!
Lunch at Miami Airport
Thanks for the cuban food guide, it all sounds yummy and interesting. I hope the renos are done as now I really want to try La Caretta. I suppose I could settle for a little stand...
Lunch at Miami Airport
Thanks! I've never had Cuban food before but it looks interesting. What's good to order?
Lunch at Miami Airport
Hi. I will be travelling next month and I have a stop over at Miami airport for a approximately 3 hours. I don't want to leave the airport so what are my best lunch bets? Thanks!
Lady and Sons (Butcher) = Disappointing
Sad to see them go (I hope something equally nice opens in the space) but when I went in there I got shoddy service. "Son" didn't know the price of what I wanted to buy, it took him 10 minutes to figure it out, and then he told me it was an outrageous price. I walked out.
Baldini on Queen St. E.
I love this place. It's a little hiden gem. I've had the pizzas (can't remember which one I ordered) and it's superb. There's also a spicy sausage pasta that's very nice. Reasonable price, service a little slow (it's only one guy!) and huge portions. I love it.
Dinner at Toba - dissapointing
Last night a friend and I went for dinner at Toba. I know that a lot of people on this board like it (although most posts are brunch related).
The room itself is very nice and we liked the ambiance. We also noticed that the service was very friendly and attentive.
I started with the calamari salad which had a honey glaze on it. Unfortnately, this made the greens underneath very soggy and the calamari itself was like tire rubber, and the sauce too sweet.
My friend had the watermelon and feta salad which was very nice and light tasting-.
We both ordered the gnocchi with sausage for a main and my friend (who is Italian) said the sauce was dissapointing - very basic red sauce with some crumbled sausage in it. The gnocchi themselves were quite fresh and plump but this dish did not WOW me. I can make that kind of sauce at home.
When dessert came around, we were informed that 3 of the 5 listed were not available, but they were substituting two new desserts. None really appealed so we skipped dessert. We were pretty full from the gnocchi anyway (it was a decent sized portion).
Overall, I don't think I'll return for dinner. But at least now I can say I tried it.
Business Lunch, Financial Core
Hello
A vendor has offered to take me for a business lunch. My office is at King and University. Any reccomentations? The vendor suggested Ki but I've eaten there and honestly thought it was a bit overpriced for what you get. I've also been to Nota Bene for lunch with another vendor (and I found it was good but looking for something different). Also have been to Monsoon and found it dissapointing.
Thanks!
The best club sandwich in TO?
Joy is near our house. That should convince hubby to take me there (I've been wanting to try it for a while, though reviews here are mixed).
Niagara Butter Tart Trail
We were just in NOTL and I was excited to see your post (I love runny butter tarts). I didn't see any individual tarts for sale at Harvest Barn but did see a 6 pack called butter tart squares. Not sure if these are the same. We bought the pecan ones and while the crust was delicious, the filling was sadly firm (still tasty, just not runny).
Peach Garden Express - really good pho
How are the rice dishes there (are there any?) My husband doesn't eat pho or bun so if we go Vietnamese we always have to find him a rice dish.
Me, I love pho, this is in my 'hood, and I look forward to trying. Thanks for your review!
Restaurant Makeover
I used to live in the condo above Natcho Thai Thai and was a regular. Awesome pad thai. After the makeover the menu looked the same but now is sadly out of business.
I also ate at the greek restaurant on Bloor and Yonge pre RM and it was OK. Have eaten at Le Cafe Vert post makeover and it was good - small portions though. I really liked their vegan spelt brownie.
They need to remake Teddy's bar and Grill on Queen and Jones. LOL.
The best club sandwich in TO?
OK...my dear husband asked me to post this. Although not a foodie, he has a few food obsessions and the first one (and it's a biggie because I learned about it on our first date!) is the club sandwich. He is looking for the best club sandwich in the city. We're talking the traditional club - the white bread triangles with the toothpick in them. So far he says the best is at the Paupers Pub. I don't eat club's so I can't really help him.
So...to those who love the club...where do you get the best traditional club in the city?
Thanks!
Guilty Pleasures?
Great thread!
Guilty pleasures:
1) pierogies (cheese and potato) with lots of onions and sour cream
2) A&W onion rings.
3) Billy Miner pie at the Keg
4) Presidents Choice White Mac N Cheese, followed closely by
5) Kraft Dinner (the original)
6) Pecan tarts from the Metro Hall farmers market (runny! hallelujia!)
7) Blarney Chips from Fionn McCools (best when slightly drunk)
8) Fried taro balls at dim sum
9) ridged chips with onion dip
10) Peanut butter chocolate Ice cream in a waffle cone from The Film Buff
I need a decent restaurant near JFK Airport.
This sounds wonderful and I love Indonesian food so i'm sure this will be to my liking. How do I get there from the airport?
I need a decent restaurant near JFK Airport.
This sounds good. If I have a 2 hr layover at JFK, do I have enough time to eat lunch here? Can I access it without a car?
Dinner at Nota Bene - A Review
I went for lunch last week. Perhaps I am the only person that didn't think the duck salad was awesome? I mean, it was GOOD, no complaints, but it didn't wow me. Now, the space is beautiful, service was impeccable (we had a great server), and the presentation of the food was great. I found the portion sizes to be "just right" so you wouldn't feel stuffed. Everyone enjoyed their food. We got a dessert tasting as well (pots du creme - I loved them all except pistachio, cherry crumble, which tasted too dry in the crumble bit, and strawberry sorbet which was excellent).
I'm going again next week for lunch to give it another shot.
Coconut milk pudding?
mmm that sounds good. can you post the recipie?
I ended up doing coconut tapioca pudding with bananas. It was divine!
