Spot Prawns season started?

I'm in Vancouver for today and am hoping to eat spot prawns (missed the festival by one week). Has the season started and if so, where would I be able to eat some either at a restaurant or bought to cook? I'm hoping that Go Fish! on Granville Island will have some but I'm open for suggestions!

Dinner Recos near St Jacobs Farmers Market for Tomorrow?

I'm going to be staying near the St. Jacob's Farmers Market tomorrow, could anyone recommend a restaurant for dinner that is in walking distance?

Leaving for Ottawa Friday morning....where to go???

The Byward Market is always a nice place to walk around and if you are looking for a great place to eat then I suggest going to Play Food and Wine. If you are still in Ottawa on Sunday, then head to Landsdowne park for the Ottawa Farmers market, we've got a lot of great local vendors. For fantastic gelato, Stella Luna near Sunnyside and Bank is by far the best I've eaten in Ottawa.

ISO: Restaurant like Black Hoof, open on Tuesday?

Thought of going to Torito for dinner tonight but didn't want to head all the way downtown so ended up going to Salt for dinner today. The prawns ala plancha which were excellent and the octopus was nice and tender. Thought the charcuterie and cheese selection were limited so we didn't order any in the end. Finished the meal with some natas at a nearby bakery which was a perfect way to end the evening.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions!

ISO: Restaurant like Black Hoof, open on Tuesday?

Got more information on what we are looking for: charcuterie would be nice, small plates, gastropub, or bistro-type restaurant. Just good, simple cooking without being too fancy. Dishes with sauerkraut would be nice.

I'm looking at maybe Cowbell or Queen and Beaver.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions so far, keep them coming!

ISO: Restaurant like Black Hoof, open on Tuesday?

Since the Black Hoof is closed on Tuesday does anyone have a suggestion for a restaurant like it with charcuterie and offal?

Alternatively, what's the best place to have choucroute in the city?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Anniversary dinner in Ottawa - help!

You might want to try Murray Street Restaurant http://www.murraystreet.ca/ I went there for lunch with friends and the food was quite good, and it's mid-range in price.

What's nice too is that you can have a choice of a 3 oz or 5 oz pour of wine. Whatever your choice I hope you have a wonderful anniversary

Best pizza in Toronto?

For a good quality pizza at home I'd recommend Italpizza, It's a wood fired frozen pizza imported from Italy. You can their pizza margherita at Costco on Highway 7. I've been eating it for the past couple of years in Ottawa but wasn't able to find it in Toronto until today. If you like thin crust pizza, this is a great brand. Reminiscent of the pizza I had while in Italy.

Opinions re: Mistura

If you do end up going to Mistura, keep your eye out for the smoked pork chop. It's a beautiful piece of meat, lightly smoked, cooked perfectly to medium, with a nice crust.

Yuzu.. fresh or bottled juice.

I've never seen fresh yuzu fruit, but I have seen bottle yuzu juice at Sanko (730 Queen Street). I remember it being about 9 dollars for a small bottle. I believe I also might have seen it at J-Town. Hope that helps!

Help! North York/Midtown Restaurant Rec, dinner for 16 Monday

Thanks for all your recommendations. Though I would have much rather dined at Quince or Oliver and Bonacini, we ended up at Day and Night Firewood Steakhouse, a chinese run steakhouse. For what we got it was a good deal, and the food okay. Had a salad with seared tuna which was quite nice. The tuna was seared rare, although my salad happened to be overly dressed and a little overwhelming. Had an 8 oz portion of rack of lamb (about 4 ribs) cooked medium rare. It was cooked perfectly, juicy and flavourful. The vegetables were however room temp, and the "gravy" obviously wasn't homemade. Tried the grilled striploin which was average, not my favourite cut of steak and it also wasn't seasoned. The grilled rib eye was a much better cut of steak.

Help! North York/Midtown Restaurant Rec, dinner for 16 Monday

I have family visiting from Hong Kong and we are a group of 16-17. At first they were going to reserve at Wok on Yonge, but I wasn't impressed with their menu so they nixed that. David Duncan Steakhouse was another suggestion that came up but I'm underwhelmed by their menu. We are now in search of a restaurant open on Monday near North York or Midtown that is easily accessible via TTC yet hopefully has parking nearby, moderately priced, and with some type of steak dish as a main course. Any suggestions anyone? My only thought right now is Quince. Thanks in advance for all your help!

Where do I take a Restaurant Addict...

I went to Splendido for dinner once and we informed them ahead of time that my mom didn't eat red meat or poultry. There were 4 of us dining and while 3 of us had the regular tasting menu, they substituted fish and seafood dishes in for her when we had a meat/poultry course. Everything was fantastic and they were really accomodating.

Fine Dining for this Sunday Night? help please

I have a couple of friends coming to Toronto this weekend and have requested that I find them a nice restaurant to dine at on Sunday night (their only night free) preferably with a tasting menu. I think a restaurant with small plates would also work as well. Any suggestions that might meet their requests?

I've looked and virtually every restaurant I can think of are closed on Sundays (Scaramouche, Colborne Lane, Splendido, Thuet, North 44, Canoe, Perigee, Amuse Bouche, George, etc)

So far I've got:

1) Chiado/Senhor Antonio
2) Lai Toh Heen
3) Sushi Kaji
4) JK Wine Bar (although we've already dined there so we'd like to go somewhere else)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Ottawa vs Toronto

I'd say check out the local farmer's market at Lansdowne Park on Sundays. There's a small food court there as well that you can have breakfast or lunch at with crepes, thai food and wild game stews, etc. Check out the selection from Bearbrook Farms, they are a wild game and animal farm. Great selection of charcuterie made from meats such as bison, elk, ostrich, etc. We've also got a local beef co-op that has some great prices on top quality meat. Their cattle are mostly pasture raised and grain fed (during the colder months). Bryson farms also have some great organic and often heirloom varieties of fruits and veggies. It's also a great time to get local strawberries. Also if Art-in-Bakery is there, they've got some good sourdough bread.

The market is a great way to spend a nice leisurely morning in Ottawa.

Shopping Mall eats

I was at Yorkdale recently and got a panini and salad from Cultures. Chicken, sundried tomato and bocconcini panino, mango salad, and a lentil salad for about 7.60 including a drink. I was disappointed with it. The mango salad was okay (they use fat cat mangoes, not altulfo), and I found that while the lentil salad had good flavour, it was quite undercooked. I liked the flavour of the sundried tomatoes in the panino and the texture of the bocconcini, but the ingredients were only in the top half of the panino and the rest was just bread.

We later walked to Shopper's Drug Mart and there was I believe they call it an Urban Market? I would have much rather grabbed a freshly cooked sausage and bun ($3-$4?) there, or a sandwich made with fresh, crusty bread, italian cold cuts and antipasto for about 4.50+tax. They also had other freshly baked products etc.

So at Yorkdale, maybe just avoid the food court and check out the Urban Market first.

Ottawa dim sum

For dim sum, I'd say the best place would be Tianrun Beijing Restaurant on Bank St. South. A little more expensive than the average but you get a much better quality. I also find they've got more variety and some interesting dishes, like steamed fish fillets with bamboo shoots wrapped in nappa cabbage, chiu chow steamed dumplings, etc. If you end up going, try their cheung fun (rice rolls) because they've got a fantastic soft silky texture. They don't take reservations so try to get there a bit earlier on the weekends. I think they also serve dimsum 7 days a week.

Casual Ottawa Recs

Sorry to be a little off topic but I hope you'll forgive me for my indulgence. For excellent, proper, thin-crust, Italian-style pizza, go to Costco. They have this brand called Italpizza that's imported from Italy and it's fantastic! All they have is Pizza Margherita although they used to carry a vegetarian one a while back that was also great. For me, it's the best pizza in Ottawa and the closest I've found to the ones I ate and made in Italy.

Casual Ottawa Recs

I tried Forno Antico a month or two ago and I have to say I was very disappointed with it. The crust wasn't as thin and crisp like traditional wood fired Italian pizza, but rather like a thin foccaccia bread, more spongey than chewy. The sauce had little flavour and I found the toppings sparce. It wasn't worth the price we paid. I should also mention that we were eating the vegetarian pizza and the pizza margherita. Perhaps if we had ordered a meat pizza it would have been more successful

Mail Order Cookies DC Area?

I was going to order from the Blue Ribbon bakery, but when I called the number provided, it was no longer in service. I guess they went out of business?

I ended up strangely enough going onto Ebay and ordering some cookies from there. From what I've been told they were great, and about the cheapest option I could find.

Dining Suggestions near U of T?

Does anyone have any suggestions for dining options near U of T? I'm going out to dinner tomorrow with two others and are looking for restaurants in the range of $30-40 a person. I'm looking mostly for asian restaurant suggestions (although not japanese), but any suggestion will be appreciated :)
