Dinner tonight near Penn Station . . . Halp!

Hey everyone,

So my mom is coming into NYC for the day, and wants to eat within walking distance (ten blocks? maybe one or two more?) of Penn Station.

We're not trying to break any bank, but we would like to have a nice meal with wine and the whole deal. What should I do??

Help me remember name of Brazilian (?) place?!

Hey guys,

So a friend pointed this place out to me as we were walking by a few days ago. I think it was on Houston between 2nd ave. and broadway. He said it was brazilian food, I think, and it's name is something like La Colombe (but it's not that, because Colombe is a coffee place). Does anyone know what this is?

Would be grateful forever!

Cheap, Delicious Lunch in Tribeca?

Hello all,

I work near the intersection of Canal and Broadway, which is sort of a crummy, sweaty, tourist-clogged area, but I have faith that there's good cheap eats to be had at lunchtime.

I am already aware of:
Westside Coffeehouse––big helpings of pretty good mexican/dominican
Columbine––fancy sandwiches
Jaya––tasty Malaysian.

What else is there?! I've eaten at these three places so many times.

Go nuts

Davis Square Bars

Hello all, I'm headed to Davis Square for dinner tonight, and I'm wondering what would be a friendly bar to go to afterwards. I don't want a swanky, space-age decor kind of thing, though a dive is also not the idea. Preferably somewhere with a terrific beer selection with a relatively informal atmosphere.

Cheap ethnic food in outlying arrondissements?

Hello again - The subject header says it all. I'm looking for non-French food in the outlying arrondissements (primarily 17th, 19th, 20th), and it has to be as cheap as possible. We all know where the good French food is in Paris, so how about the other stuff?!

Paris' best wine and/or cheese shop?

Hello all - I'm working in paris for two months, and I'm hoping to track down a great wine shop and a great cheese shop (or one that does both) while I'm here. Looking for someplace friendly, not too expensive, with a very knowledgeable staff. Also has to be easily accessible via Metro. Onward!

Lunch near El Pelon that's not El Pelon?

I'm interning near Fenway, and I've had enough burritos, delicious though they may be? Are there other places nearby that are cheap and delicious for lunch?

Anywhere to get really top notch whole leaf tea?

I mean where you can actually buy bags of tea and take them home. Where's the good stuff? I can't find it and I've been looking.

In search of the ULTIMATE Lobsta Roll

A word on Neptune's hot, buttered lobster roll. They mean it when they say buttered. In fact, it's probably a little too much butter for my taste. You know when you eat something reeeeaaalllyy rich and your throat kind of closes up? That happens. That said, the lobster is fantastic and so is the bread and it's perfectly prepared, but a word of caution is helpful I think.

Expensive sandwiches that are worth it?

I know Darwin's gets a lot of hate on this board, but what gives? I spent my summer working near Darwin's and it was happily a regular lunch destination. Granted, you need to avoid peak lunch hours (I won't argue that the service isn't bad) but their ham, cheddar, apple, lettuce, tomato, and mustard on a baguette is terrific and actually quite reasonable when you consider how large it is.

Thought somebody should stand up for the place.

Expensive sandwiches that are worth it?

Ok, I know fancy sandwich places charge absurd amounts of cash, but I just spent $11 on a sandwich from Cardullo's in Harvard Sq. that was worth it and then some. It's called the Donald, and it has duck confit, fig spread, and gruyere on a baguette. It ruelz. It's like the sandwich that Henry VIII would eat right after getting remarried.

Any others that merit the steep price?

ISO good coffee

I'll agree with you on Diesel, but I object to favorable characterizations of Peets. The place is filthy, I mean gross dirt ew, and the coffee tasted about the same when I went last week.

Looking for French Bistro. Pierrot?

So I've been to Pierrot before and had a really terrific time (terrific, conservative menu, lightly disdainful French staff, the whole deal), and I'm really in the mood for some French staples. I'd be happy to go back to Pierrot, but are there other places I should be prioritizing?

Douzo, Japanese, Report 11/2/06

The yellowtail is also really simple and really nicely done. It's nice to get if you're looking to complement the Red Spider Maki, which is a little overwhelming even if it is delicious.

Twin Donuts Recs?

Two questions: 1st, what should I be sure to get at Twin Donuts tomorrow morning.

2nd, is Twin Donuts worth getting up very early for? (consider that I am a college student, even if I don't quite sleep as late as one)

best pizza in boston area

I know they put every slice back in the oven, but it really doesn't compare at all to the first few minutes after it's been baked.

best pizza in boston area

The key with Noch's in Harvard Sq. is that the pizza there is absolutely terrific when it comes out of the oven and kind of gross within 10 minutes. Get whichever looks freshest. I know this a food-wide rule of thumb, but the difference is huge.

a slice of sausage and a slice of tomato basil is a pretty tasty combination.

What is a Hot Toddy? How is it made? [moved from Boston board]

There's been some debate amongst my friends, so I thought I would settle the question with some debate amongst you all.

East Coast Grill Recs?

Hounds - I'm headed to Inman Sq. for a friend's birthday celebration. I seem to remember some negative things said about ECG on this board in the past, but since I'm going what should I opt for?

Best Deli in Boston?

Only stipulation is that it needs to be T or walking accessible. I don't have access to a car.
