Philly Hound Looking for Good Beer and Grub in Downtown Charlotte

Don't limit yourself to walking, seven minute drive, there's NoDa Brewing and Song Bird Brewery right beside it, then further down on North Davidson, there's Growlers restaurant and Jack Beagles across the street. Drive there and cab it back if it gets too ugly.

During the day on Camden, there's Common Market, great place for beer and sandwiches. Beers on tap and a wall of coolers with individual beers. You can sit outside too.

If you do decide to stay within walking distance, I do not think you will be disappointed with beer selections in most restaurants, beer is the new black right now.

Best Inexpensive restaurant in Downtown/Midtown Charlotte

Smalls is a new restaurant on Elizabeth Ave. It has small plates and a reasonably priced menu.

Buffalo Chicken Meatballs

These sound delicious, can't wait to try this recipe. I love chicken meatballs, I make them all the time, but I always do a crushed tomato sauce. It's a basic recipe, salt, pepper, onion, parsley egg and a little panko.

Charlotte - downtown or near Ovens for Tapas type fare?

Pizza in Charlotte

One of the best pizza places in Charlotte is Villa Francesca's. My favorite is the grandma's pie slice, I like the center slice.

Lunch near High Line

You have many places to choose from in Chelsea Market. There's Thai, Friedman's Lunch, a farm to table restaurant, you could sit in the bar at Colicchio & Sons. The Tippler bar isn't too far for a cocktail.. I'm not sure how far, but the Spotted Pig might be a good stop too. I just ate in the bar at Colicchio last week and they had key lime doughnuts with coconut ice cream.

one more thing you might want to check out, totally not near the Hi Line.

My photo is Friedman's Lunch, matzo ball soup and Rosé. Not just for breakfast anymore.

Road trip from NYC to Charleston

Does your GPS have the restaurant option? I play GPS Roulette while driving, see what restaurants are close by and judge by name. So much fun!! Perfect for bbq searching! Also hot dogs!! If you love going to dive restaurants, food can be hit or miss, but the journey is what's fun anyway! When you hit SC, you have to stop for some mustard base bbq sauce too.

In Raleigh, Poole's Diner is probably the can't miss, she also just opeded a fried chicken restaurant called Beasley. The bbq restaurants in Raleigh are Coopers and Ole Time. Char Grill is probably a fun stop too.

In Charleston, fig and Husk are the hot spots, both known for beautiful cocktails (and food).
If you like pour over coffee, Hope & Union is a fancy smancy coffee shop in Charleston. Have fun!

Craft Beer Pubs or Food Specialty Stores in Charlotte

I know this is an old post, I wonder if he or she ever made the leap to CLT! The Wine Shop at Foxcroft on Fairview Road, just added six taps and got a good write up on the CLT burger blog, what more could you ask for?

Six new taps. Delirium Tremens, Bell's Oberon, Great Divide Hercules Double IPA, Mother Earth Brewing Weeping Willow Witt, New Holland Dragon's Milk & Victory Prima Pils

Looking for specialty shopping sources in Charlotte

I think you will be pleasantly surprised you will be able to find what you need around Charlotte and plenty of fun grocery stores to wander around just for the heck of it. Super G is fantastic! I was surprised by the Indian food aisle. Some of my favorite Asian markets are Zen Market, Overseas Market and there is a new grocery store in Stallings, filled with a bakery and even had live tilapia. My favorite for latin is Atlantic Farmer's Market, a proper grocery store, just called farmer's market. There are plenty of tiendas on South Blvd, loaded with baked goods, butchers and counters to eat quick soft tacos. Cedarland for middle eastern, Turkish, a great selection of candy bars, dried beans, some dairy. Plenty of dried beans, grape leaves and bulghur. Also, a counter to order prepared food.

Cocktails in Charlotte

The return of the cocktail has not hit Charlotte yet, but there are plenty of great patios and beautiful places to enjoy. The new restaurant Halcyon at the Mint Museum would be my first stop. Gorgeous patio. Bentley's on 27th (drinks only), WXYZ bar at the Aloft hotel, Twenty Two on Central Ave. and bloody marys at Zada Janes. Couple of places on North Davidson, Growlers (beer pub) Jack Beagles (neighborhood bar, tiny back patio, nothing fancy) Revolution (pizza, great outdoor seating)

Where to buy beef cheeks and veal cheek in Atlanta

Call Buckhead Beef in ATL, they can tell you who sells it retail because it probably comes from them.

Local Honey in Charlotte

There's a girl here in Charlotte that sells honeycombs in wooden boxes to local restaurants for fancy smancy cheese plates. I'm sure you could buy some of her honey too.

Settle a bet? Prettiest restaurant in Charlotte.

Just visited Halcyon! Gorgeous and a great patio overlooking Tryon.. Can't wait for warmer weather.

Wine tasting in Porto

We took the train and went to Pinhao for an afternoon, there are some photos on Facebook
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=171667&id=154175298035

You can buy goofy tourist bus tickets and it drives to the other side of the river where the Port houses are, it's great way to look around when you want a little break and you can hop on and off. Even if you didn't get any information, you will get along just fine.

Restaurant Stemware - Do You Even Care?

It is one of my pet peeves, I am floored when restaurants take so much time with the menu, local produce, seasonal menus, creative wine list and then big ole fat rimmed glasses from Libby! Sends me into orbit. And don't even get me started on flat sparkling in restaurants!

Birthday cake for a crowd emergency help!

Brownies are always something easy and people love boxed brownies. Easy to whip up, you can also buy ice cream and make brownie sundaes.

Another super easy thing is instant pudding and homemade whipped cream on layer cake.. You can top it with anything, crumbled candy bars/ banana, nuts and coconut.../ strawberries..

You can buy cut and bake cookies and make ice cream sandwiches...

also look in coupon books and restaurant.com and find some coupons and just buy something

Favorite thing to cook in a cast iron skillet

I'm going to have get on the crowd favorite and say cornbread. But steak on a cast iron grill pan is pretty darn tasty too. I found the cutest little cast iron individual muffin skillet. Just made sausage grit cakes this morning. I love giving these as a hostess gift.

do you deep-fry?

Maybe it's the white trash in me, but I fry on the porch with a Frydaddy! And I have been known to put the crockpot filled with collards on the porch too!
http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=fry+daddy&tag=mh0b-20&index=garden&hvadid=20766523&ref=pd_sl_943klv9lzp_e

People gather around the fryer, just like how people gather in the kitchen. Also, when you are frying go on and take advantage and fry everything!

Blackeye pea hushpuppies are always a hit. Also, crispy fried snapper with a coconut red curry!

Lebanese in Charlotte?

Middle East Deli has changed to Carolina Kebap. I have been a couple of times, they have really revamped, it has tables with waiter service. It has really improved since the deli days. I am addicted to their tabouli.

Thai in Charlotte?

I am trying to do a blog on coupon dining and visiting restaurants that I might not go to regularly, we did a Russian roulette pick the other day and discovered Makong. We ordered it all the way, five star Thai hot! drunken noodles and green curry. What a great surprise visit! Really good food and friendly, sincere service.

Port Recommendation for Christmas Present?

Port is a great gift. I would go to a local wine shop and see if they have any gems hidden, they could have some vintage or Late Bottled. It might be interesting to give him a gift of 10 yr, 20 yr and 30 yr. Or a basic Tawny and then maybe one nicer one. Or a Ruby and a Tawny.

Taylor Fladgate, Graham's, Warre's, Dow, Sandeman. These are very easy to find.
There are plenty of great Ports, even at your higher end groceries.

Elite Chocolate with Pop Rocks

I didn't know this exsisted! Hubby just brought it back from the UK via someone from Israel. WOW, I understand why you are looking for it.
