Lunch--Westbound from Windsor Locks, CT
you HAVE to get sweet potato fries with chili-lime dipping sauce ;)
reservation by e-mail: how long do i wait for a reply?
on a whim, i went to the other website (St Germaine) and got a response within hours. so i guess we're going there instead!
reservation by e-mail: how long do i wait for a reply?
tried to contact L'Atelier Etoile de JR requesting the 6:30 seating for a night in June. this was almost two weeks ago and i never got a response. do i assume that i am just out of luck and get on with my life?
Lunch--Westbound from Windsor Locks, CT
Chatterley's and Blue Sky Foods are both in New Hartford, about 45 minutes from Bradley. they are very different from each other but both fun. (Caveat: Chatterley's does not always fall into the category of "reasonably prompt.") In Granby, there is a brewpub called Cambridge House: stick to basics and you should be OK. if your stomachs can hold out just a little longer, Pastorale on Rt 44 in Lakeville is lovely, as is Le Laurentis which is right next door.
Non-mother's day birthday on mother's day in Hartford.
any way of picking up some nice pre-made stuff and bringing it back to someone's house to reheat? not glamorous by any means but it will be much saner. also more flexibility. Mother's Day and Valentine's Day are the days when most diners know better than to leave the house.
breakfast near Sofitel St James? [London]
definitely bumpkin all the way.
beef brisket curry sounds amazing, exactly the kind of thing we can't get here.
breakfast near Sofitel St James? [London]
we will be coming to London in June, staying at the Sofitel. i am not a big fan of hotel breakfasts so i am looking for something nearby where we can get a light breakfast, and more importantly, good coffee!
also, assuming extreme jet lag the first night, looking for nice dinner within walking distance that won't be too loud or scene-y (this will be a Saturday night). thanks!
light breakfast near Luxembourg Parc?
i will walk 6 minutes for a cat.
thanks for all the ideas!
light breakfast near Luxembourg Parc?
coming to Paris in June & can't wait!
i want to thank everyone who has come before me...i am obsessively reading the boards and making/changing plans. but first things first...we are staying at the Hotel Luxembourg Parc (rue de Vaugirard) and not partaking of the breakfast option there. we don't eat much in the mornings but would like to sit down for a decent cup of coffee and a croissant. also, i get crabby without coffee so i don't want to walk too far.
it looks like there is a boulangerie Paul about 10 minutes away. is that an okay option or can i do better? i am not looking for an earth-shattering breakfast experience, just something tasty and expeditious. thanks for your help!
Anniversary Dinner
i would second Toqueville.
like you, we live in CT but come down for occasional blowouts. we went to Tocqueville on Saturday night and it was just wonderful...food, ambiance, and service.
"not too stuffy" is so subjective...we appreciate not being greeted by servers who say "hi guys, how ya doing tonight?" and "you still working on that?" so that officially makes us geezers. but the atmosphere here is professional without being cold.
on the other hand, EMP is also a very special place, although we haven't been since they changed to that scary-looking "grid" menu. the room is also much, much larger. Tocqueville is a more intimate setting for an anniversary.
Post the Three Favorite Things You Ate in a Restaurant in So. NE in 2011
again, in no particular order, and i will think of something else that should have been on the list:
pan-seared duck breast with salted caramel sauce at Alta in Lenox (sounds odd, tastes amazing)
sweet potato fries with curry-lime dipping sauce at Blue Sky Foods, New Hartford
slow roasted pork with baby bok choy at Metro Bis in Simsbury
looking forward to finding new faves in 2012!
Victoria: no reservations, how long a wait?
in a place like Zambri's or Brasserie L'ecole, how long is the wait if we wander in around 7:00 on a Friday night? (we're native New Yorkers who are born impatient!)

Cooking in the NE during power outages
we are also in CT, been out since Saturday night, and not expecting power to be restored for five more days. the generator powers our fridge and microwave, but because of the local shortage of gas we haven't been running it continously. we were out of the country right before the storm and didn't have time to lay in provisions. we have a gas grill, so we've been eating grilled chicken, canned soup, microwaved potatoes, and lots of leftover Halloween candy. the closest supermarket that's open is over the border in MA. we are not starving by any means but i've been getting odd cravings for the things i can't cook right now (i would KILL for a giant bowl of spaghetti!). really, we are better off than other folks in the area--there are no trees lying on top of our house--so i am grateful for what we have. but as soon as the power comes back on i am going to COOK.
Morning Star vs Boca Brand
i don't like either. i am a Gardenburger fan (veggie burger only). better mouth feel somehow.
ramen for claustrophobes?
last time we were in your fair city, i wanted to try Menchanko Tei. DH got two steps inside, looked at the seating situation, and said "oh, no. No no no." (or something to that effect)
where can we go for noodles where we won't feel like sardines?
Restaurant Advice for 2 day trip to NYC

Lunch off I-91, 84, 90?
what kind of lunch do you want...fast & easy, or sit down/linger awhile?
any cuisine OK?
Saratoga: nice lunch spot?
as promised: first, a big thank you to everyone who chimed in.
so OF COURSE, all the best-laid plans, blah blah blah. we took a very circuitous (but highly scenic) route up, also travelling with other people, so we ended up eating lunch in VT on Friday. got into town, got settled & washed up, had a drink on the porch at Maestro's and watched the world go by. i had tried to get into 28 Tables but they were totally full (unless we wanted to eat dinner at 10:30, which is past my bedtime most nights). ended up at One Caroline, which was fine although one of our companions did not like his app. the waitress graciously took it off the bill and all was well from there.
the next day we ended up eating breakfast and lunch at the track (sigh), but DH & i found BlueSmoke/Shake Shack and were reasonably content. had an early dinner at Maestro's--quite delicious (he had sockeye salmon, i had warm spinach salad with lobster, and a generous amount of lobster at that) before concert at SPAC. came back into town, stopped in at Plum Dandy (had a Groupon!) for our version of a nightcap.
got up fairly early and beat the crowd to Country Corner, where we had some artery-clogging breakfast, then back home.
i love this town...clearly we have to come back so i can hit everything i didn't get to. thanks again!
Dinner in or near Ridgefield?
we liked Bailey's Backyard, although it's been a couple of years since we've been there.

Satan sandwich!
i had never heard this expression until this morning, when Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) used the term to describe the newly hatched deal to raise the debt ceiling. (actually, he said "sugar-coated Satan sandwich," which is even better).
of course, we got to thinking, what would be on a Satan sandwich? deviled ham topped with deviled eggs seems too obvious. plus, we couldn't think of a good bread. your thoughts?
Saratoga: nice lunch spot?
thanks to all...Scallions looks perfect.
we are planning to hit Maestro's for dinner at some point, although i may change my mind and check out Capriccio instead. still in the recon stage.
Saratoga: nice lunch spot?
first time visitors looking for lunch ideas... creative sandwiches, big salads, not that interested in burgers. thanks!
puff pastry: pre-bake or not?
i am cooking the veggies first.
no eggs, just a little cheese.
and in response to SherBel, there's one sheet of pastry sitting in the freezer and i just want to use it before i forget about it ;)
not planning to go too heavy.
puff pastry: pre-bake or not?
i am going to combine several recipes to make a zucchini & mushroom tart. half of the recipes say to pre-bake the crust before adding the filling; the others say to just throw the filling in and bake.
does pre-baking make the crust less likely to get soggy? will there be an appreciable difference between methods?
i am planning to saute the veggies first, regardless of how i do the crust; will that also make a difference?
