Yes, Penny, I'm referring to whole lobsters. A good lobster roll would be a treat. Thanks for all the great recs!

Recs for lobster dishes??

Coming to Boston this month for first time since '02. Not a big fan of "plain" lobster, but love good dishes made with it. Any recommendations in downtown area for places and dishes? Thanks!

Local Flavor Baton Rouge Lafayette and Opelousas

Some possibilities for Baton Rouge might be The Chimes or Sammy's for local seafood (and poboys, hamburgers, etc.), a unique version of pizza at Fleur de Lisle, or European from Pinetta's on Perkins Road. Any specific tpe of food you're searching for??

Wine shop needed near New Orleans, LA

Lafayette would definitely be well past your destination. Rouse's on Veteran's in Metairie would be your closest to the airport (link in Zin's post). Martin's is great too - but if you go that far into Metairie (also on Vets, but much further toward N.O.), you might want to visit Dorginac's Food Center instead / also - http://www.dorignacs.com/ - great selection of wine, spirits, and N.O. groceries.

Recommendations from the freezer section of Trader Joe's???

I've been a fan of TJ's for years, but as we didn't have one in BR, I've had to purchase things that traveled, and have stayed away from the enticing frozen goodies. That will change on Halloween when our TJ's finally opens - in my neighborhood no less!

What should be my first purchases from the freezer section - meals, desserts, etc.? Thanks in advance the recommendations!

Friend likes JW Blue...what is equal but less $

Johnny Walker Swing is very similar to Blue, and only around $60. But, it's hard to find!

Bargain eats in Vegas? Plus, Lotus of Siam still good?

I visit Lotus every trip to LV and have not noticed any such decline. Re: canned sauces - what? Have you been in their kitchen? Sure don't taste canned!

Good tamales?

Thanks Uptown,

I just discovered their Facebook page yesterday and subscribed. Hope to catch them my next trip down from B.R.

Good tamales?

Looking for recent recommendations for tamales in the N.O. area - both restaurants and groceries, if applicable. I like all styles, but really miss Manuel's!

Thanks!

Galatoire's

Downstairs is the Galatoires experience and worth the wait - enjoy! Sazerac + Oysters Rockefeller + Trout Amandine = Happiness!

Recs for Indian?

Meeting a buddy in Vegas who lives in Hawaii and is missing good Indian food - what are some recs? Been reading about Mint and that sounds good, but don't want to miss something better. We're staying downtown, but have a car. Thanks for any advice!

Baton Rouge

Chimes is great. Other good ones include Portobello's, Mason's, Acme Oyster House,... what part of town will you be in? (eta - just saw how old thread is - might be too late to help!)

Okay to use induction skillet on gas stove?

A friend who is moving / unloading stuff offered my his large t-fal skillet. After I got it home, noticed it's an induction model. Any reason not to use it on my gas stove? Or should I pass it on to someone else?

Joe Sepie's Cafe on Jefferson Highway...........

The tamales are an attempt at Manuel's - they claim to have the recipe. They are similar with the homogenous blend masa and meat and even smell very similar. But I find something missing - not sure what. Might get some tomorrow to do some research! ;-)

Baton Rouge favorites

Lots of good recs already. I'll add Brandt's Maisonette (on Government) for some excellent fine dining (Louisiana influenced continental) and for less formal, but still nice, dining Portobellos (couple of locations) - great Italian, steaks, and seafood.

Vegas Bar Recs -- Help!

Peppermill would be fun. Just back from a trip and discovered my new "favorite" bar in Vegas - Frankie's Tiki Room. It's not on the strip - several blocks west on West Charleston - so mainly if you have a car. Very good drinks in the tiki tradition, and great decor. Not much from the outside, but great place to relax and have a different experience and good drinks. We wound up going twice last week.

Lotus of Siam - help me decide this year's....

I only wish I'd been more hungry today. Had the usual starter (Nam Kao Tod) - great as usual. Decided to try the Khao Sai with the short ribs. Fantastic. Thanks for all the feedback.

Lotus of Siam - help me decide this year's....

Making my annual to LOS. Always start with the Nam Kao Tod because there's nothing similar to it at my local (Baton Rouge) Thai restos. Have also had the Kang Omm a few years ago and the whole fried catfish last year.

What should be my next "try" at LOS? Nominations are welcome (and thanked in advance).

Houston - Supermarket bacon recs?

Running over to Houston for Thanksgiving and bored with my local bacons. Any recs for some good cured pig that I'd find "only" at Central Marekt, Randall's, etc.?

Thanks!

Galatoire's is it closed in July and August? and also...

Nope - not closed that I know of! They are, however, closed on Mondays. For more: http://www.galatoires.com/

Don't know about the tab part, but my favorite cocktail to have there is either a Sazerac or a "Galatoire's Special" - which is a Saz made with bourbon instead of rye. Usually have a cocktail (or two if not driving) before and with apps, and then wine with main course.

My standards are Oysters Rockefeller and Trout Amandine, but there are tons of great dishes on the menu.

Cafe Brulot is, IMHO, more flavorful than irish coffee, but I don't often have either The orange and clove set it off nicely. Definitely try it.

If going at night, know that they do require jackets for men.

Bon App!
