Joe Sepie's Cafe on Jefferson Highway...........
The tamales are an attempt at Manuel's - they claim to have the recipe. They are similar with the homogenous blend masa and meat and even smell very similar. But I find something missing - not sure what. Might get some tomorrow to do some research! ;-)
Baton Rouge favorites
Lots of good recs already. I'll add Brandt's Maisonette (on Government) for some excellent fine dining (Louisiana influenced continental) and for less formal, but still nice, dining Portobellos (couple of locations) - great Italian, steaks, and seafood.
Vegas Bar Recs -- Help!
Peppermill would be fun. Just back from a trip and discovered my new "favorite" bar in Vegas - Frankie's Tiki Room. It's not on the strip - several blocks west on West Charleston - so mainly if you have a car. Very good drinks in the tiki tradition, and great decor. Not much from the outside, but great place to relax and have a different experience and good drinks. We wound up going twice last week.

Lotus of Siam - help me decide this year's....
I only wish I'd been more hungry today. Had the usual starter (Nam Kao Tod) - great as usual. Decided to try the Khao Sai with the short ribs. Fantastic. Thanks for all the feedback.
Lotus of Siam - help me decide this year's....
Making my annual to LOS. Always start with the Nam Kao Tod because there's nothing similar to it at my local (Baton Rouge) Thai restos. Have also had the Kang Omm a few years ago and the whole fried catfish last year.
What should be my next "try" at LOS? Nominations are welcome (and thanked in advance).
Brigstens-what to order??
Second that duck rec, but have only been once so can't comment on much else. The duck I had was excellent though.
Houston - Supermarket bacon recs?
Running over to Houston for Thanksgiving and bored with my local bacons. Any recs for some good cured pig that I'd find "only" at Central Marekt, Randall's, etc.?
Thanks!
Galatoire's is it closed in July and August? and also...
Nope - not closed that I know of! They are, however, closed on Mondays. For more: http://www.galatoires.com/
Don't know about the tab part, but my favorite cocktail to have there is either a Sazerac or a "Galatoire's Special" - which is a Saz made with bourbon instead of rye. Usually have a cocktail (or two if not driving) before and with apps, and then wine with main course.
My standards are Oysters Rockefeller and Trout Amandine, but there are tons of great dishes on the menu.
Cafe Brulot is, IMHO, more flavorful than irish coffee, but I don't often have either The orange and clove set it off nicely. Definitely try it.
If going at night, know that they do require jackets for men.
Bon App!
New to Savannah: Looking for good NON-chain places
Just got back from brief visit to Savannah. Here are a few good non-chains for you!
Soho South Cafe, 12 West Liberty Street Savannah, Georgia 31401 Phone: 912-233-1633, http://www.sohosouthcafe.com/ - nice lunch place especially - artsy atmosphere
Olde Pink House 23 Abercorn St - "olde" Savannah - terrific food - romantic place
B Matthews on Bay Street - kind of grungy atmosphere, but fantastic food! http://bmatthewseatery.com/
Vic's on the River - http://www.vicsontheriver.com/ - Good food and great view of the river
Lotus of Siam
Had the same dilemma last week - have been wanting to try for years, but am usually in LV with at least one non-Thai fan friend. We went to the lunch buffet and I ordered off the menu. Both my dining companions were extremely pleased with the buffet - I tried a few things off their plates and agreed. Surprised by the negatives I've heard about it.
Personally, I had the Nam Kao Tod (minced sour sausage) to start - fantastic and highly recommended - unlike anything at my local Thai restos. I'll have to get it everytime (but still try additional dishes).
Followed with Kang Omm - a red curry (with chicken in my case). It was good, but didn't find it fantastic.
Serrano's Salsa Company - Really Bad?
I've been surprised at the negative reviews for the Metairie location. Haven't eaten there, but have at the LSU location many times. Good place, though I agree with Celeste's assessment.
Middendorf's sold
To Horst and Karen Pfeiffer, former owners of Bella Luna. They say no changes are planned for the old place. Whoda thunk it???
salted caramel ice cream at Creole Creamery
I've read about salted caramel - does it simply tasting like salty caramel (which I could see being good)? Or is it a different dimension altogether?
Raising Canes
Raisin' Canes grew up here in Baton Rouge near LSU's campus. The chicken is good, but how good depends on your preferences - I like mine spicier than they do it. Yes, that's all they do - one of the secrets to their success. They are a one-trick pony, but the trick they do they do well and a lot of people seem to want. For me, it's a rarity, but a lot of friends drive thru regularly.
Thanksgiving in Houston recs?
Hi,
We will be in Houston for Thanksgiving and are looking for good recommendations for T'day fine dining. Thinking about The Brownstone, but also interested in other ideas. Thanks in advance!
Re-opening date for Commander's?
Here's an article from today's New Orleans Times Picayune on the re-opening:

Chicago style pizza in D.C.?
Been craving it lately - none down here in Louisiana. Looking for good, gino's-style stuff. Yes, I've considered mailorder, but will be in D.C. around beginning of December - what a great time that would be for some freshly made deep-dish!
Anywhere in D.C. do that sort of thing? Thanks for any ideas.
Baton Rouge to St. Louis, great road food recs?
The Bloody Mary comment made me think of something you might want to grab for the road as you're passing thru B.R. - Zapp's potato chips have a new temporary flavor: "Spicy Creole Tomato" mad with Tabasco. Tastes like a Bloody Mary (without the vodka!). Might be a treat for others at your destination or home.
Baton Rouge to St. Louis, great road food recs?
Couple of on-the-interstate suggestions:
In Jackson, Mississippi (and in Memphis as well) good, unique pizza (using cream cheese on some - verrrry good) at "Old Venice Pizza." http://www.ovpc.com/
The Jackson one is right off 55 (directions on the website under contact info).
In Baton Rouge, there's a good seafood place right off I-10 at the Perkins Road exit - "Parrain's" - http://www.parrains.com/
Can come up with other B.R. suggestions if you have specific interests. Happy Traveling and Eating!
Wine fridge - Kenmore? Vinotemp?
I have a Haier 30 bottle. Love it - no problems. Got it on sale at Sears a few years back for only 200 bucks. Still can't get over that price!
In praise of my fast food indulgence, Popeye's... this one's for you jupiter and sivyaleah!!
I "love that chicken"! In college I knew someone who said he found out which day they'd change out the grease and would get his right before because the pepper had built up and it was spicier. Don't know about if that really works, but thought it was funny.
I had forgotten about the onion rings - better off not eating too many of those, but now that you've reminded me...... ;-)
Cost Plus World Market
Good wine selection and very good prices, esp. when they put things on sale. Also pick up "Oregon Chai" concentrate there. As far as other food items, just love to browse and try different things every time.
Louisiana, Not New Orleans
As another Baton Rougean, I like this idea. Just seems a better fit than the general South board. Please keep it in mind Alpha Chowhounds.
baton rouge eats
Good recs so far. I'd add a few:
Mandina's - a New Orleans resto that opened here after The Thing. Good "neighborhood" style New Orleans style seafood and italian.
Brandt's Maisonette - fine dining in a small, intimate setting.
Second that rec on The Chimes (casual near LSU) and Mansur's (fine dining on Corporate) - both great.
Any specific types of food you're looking for? Lot's of Asian and Middle Eastern choices and a great Indian place too ("India's" on Essen Lane).
London with Kids
Ditto on the pubs comment.
Good fast food (different from states fare) would be the "Pret a Manger" chain thruout London. Sandwiches of various types (my fav is the duck with hoisin sauce wrap) and drinks and chips. Grab a bunch then head for nearest park for nice lunchtime experience.
Cheers!
big fat mama's tamales now in Louisiana
So how ARE these tamales??? Looking for some good ones in the Baton Rouge metro area!
