Weekday lunch in dowtown Minneapolis - hot and sour soup

Thanks bkmnus! I'll try it.

Weekday lunch in dowtown Minneapolis - hot and sour soup

Where are some places that I can get some good hot and sour soup? I suppose I could stop in at a random place, but I would prefer recommendations. Thanks.

Le Bernardin - what can I expect for my final bill for two?

I have looked at the online menu and I see that it is $110 each for 4 courses, so that makes $220. We will have wine, probably a bottle rather than by the glass, but we won't likely drink more than 2 glass each. How much should I figure for wine? If wine is $60, that makes $280, plus 30% for tax and tip, makes $364 (I'm figuring 20% tip and 10% tax). Is that a reasonable estimate? Also, am I supposed to tip the Sommelier separately or does their tip come out of the server's tip? We are saving some money on our hotel this year, so I'm thinking we can swing it, but I'd like to prepare in advance. Thanks!

Coming to town...NEED HELP

Just as a general recommendation, Oceana looks good to me, and it's on my list of restaurants to try when I go in May. I've never been there, but it's been recommended by RGR, who takes great pictures when she dines. Look at their website and see if it is something that interests you.

Any senior citizen-friendly but good restaurants in St. Paul?

I took my mom to a Mother's Day Brunch at Fabulous Fern's a few years back. The food was very good, and the noise level was not too bad.

Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives might be returning to Minnesota

Cecil's in St. Paul.

St. Patrick's Day bars open 7am??

I don't know the answer to your question, but Happy St. Patrick's Day tomorrow! You have unintentionally reminded me to wear my shamrock earrings tomorrow.

trip of a lifetime, want to get the food right!

That potato gnocchi gratin from Oceana looks wonderful. RGR, I really appreciate your photos. Your photos are making my list of NYC restaurants longer and longer. Maybe I will need to stay for a month so I can get to all the restaurants on my list!

Pittsburgh Blue - Maple Grove - First mention?

I love Pittsburgh Blue. We eat there almost every Saturday night. You should try it and judge for yourself. It's a Parasole restaurant and it's a lot like Manny's, but with less expensive options, though you can still spend a lot of money there if you choose. It has the same cuts of meat as Manny's. I live in Maple Grove, so it is convenient, but that is not the only reason I like it there. I like that when we walk in the door, they know our name. For whoever said the service is so-so, obviously, Jorge, Andrew, Teri, Val, Jana, Sarah or Dwan wasn't your server. Those are the names I can think of at the moment, and there are other very excellent servers. If you decide to go there, you will want to make reservations.

Weekend Visit - Additional Recommendations - Thoughts

I'm glad I could finally say thank you almost 2 years later. I wonder if you are the one that recommended Keen's? If you were, thank you for that recommendation also. I was there with my mom and sister, and we shared the Porterhouse for 2, and there was some left over. It's nice that they let you split things. We also had potatoes, a vegetable and a shrimp starter. The server let us each take home a menu that showed the story of Keen's on it. We took them with us for our trip to the top of the Empire State building and we got various comments about having menus. It was funny. The menu is tucked away in my closet and I see it every once in a while and I think of my fond memories from Keen's.

Weekend Visit - Additional Recommendations - Thoughts

2 years ago, I went to the West Bank Cafe on the recommendation of RGR, and I probably never thanked her. Thanks RGR! I suppose I never reported back because I don't have a great way with words the way some other people on this board do. It's on 407 West 42nd Street (between 9th and 10th) which is pretty close to the Port Authority Bus Terminal. I'm not sure if that is the same thing as the Circle Line Terminal. I had a skirt steak and it was yummy. I loved the atmosphere, it was cozy and energetic, but you didn't feel like you were supposed to hurry up and leave so the server could wait on their next table. On that visit to NYC we also went to Keen's - you'll love Keen's! Have a great time!

Edit: If you do decide to go to WBC for an early dinner, you will need to check if they are open at 4:00. I am from Minneapolis and a frequent visitor to NYC, so there are lots of things I don't know!

Do you need reservations for lunch at Cafe Boulud?

Thanks, Ann. Last year, we flew into Newark taking the same flight we may take again, and we were at our hotel checking in by noon, though the traffic was quite light. I don't remember being stopped in traffic at all, so it certainly could have been a fluke. Good point too about the flight being on time, that's a factor too. We are staying at the Hotel Elysee, which is on 54th between Madison and Park and it appears the subway is pretty close, or we could hail a cab. Maybe we'll have lunch or dinner there on a different day.

Do you need reservations for lunch at Cafe Boulud?

Our plane will arrive in New York on a Tuesday (either EWR or LGA) at about 11:00 or a little before, we should be to the hotel by noon, check in and then we will have lunch. Of course, there is the traffic factor, so I'm not sure exactly for what time I would make reservations. What if I make them for 1:00 but arrive at the restaurant at 12:30? Or should I just show up and hope they give me a table? I don't want to be rude and make reservations and then miss them due to traffic or other unforeseen events. Maybe I'm overthinking this, but what can I say. Try as I may, I can't run from who I am. Thanks.

Ever get cheated on a restaurant gift card?

Good to know! Thanks for sharing your experience so it doesn't happen to others. You'd think they would have told you to take your receipt, but I guess they knew they wanted to cheat you.

3 Week Chowfest; Help!!!

I love your review of Katz Deli! I meant to get there on last year's trip, so you make me realize I need to try harder to get there on this year's trip.

Near macys Lunch (Downtown Mpls)

Zelo is very good, it's on Nicollet Mall and 9th, I think. Also, surprisingly, Manny's at the W Hotel is quite reasonable for lunch, when compared to dinner. It's in the old Foshay Tower at ninth and Marquette. Manny's used to be in the Hyatt, but they got new digs last summer at the W Hotel, when the W Hotel converted the Foshay. It goes without saying that Manny's is excellent. My husband and I split a clubhouse sandwich and a salad for lunch, we both have soda and it's around $23 before tip. So if you both get an entree, it would probably be around $40. Also, you get the delicious Manny's raisin bread! Yum! Have fun shopping with your Grandma!

Perturbed at Le Bernardin

I think you are making a good choice not to go. You have to vote with your dollar, as they say. How dissappointing though, that you were looking forward to it. I don't get exactly get what a tasting menu is, but I don't think it takes longer, does it? Also, it's been a long time since I worked in restaurant, but if someone overstays their welcome, there are gentle ways of letting them know and getting them to leave. It's not a good idea to be a jerk to them before they even get to the restaurant - that has predictable results.

Perturbed at Le Bernardin

Wow, that's pretty rude, especially for the amount of money you would be spending. Are you still going to go? Maybe for now they are protected from the economy because of their reputation and quality, but if this is a regular way they treat customers, I can't see how they could stay in business.

Recommendations for cheesecake in Midtown.

The 3 llamas are arriving in NYC 5/14/08. We are the gentle giants from Minnesota, and when we get angry, we spit. We don't expect to be angry while in NYC though! So, the plans are to check into our hotel on 5/14 around noon, have lunch at Chelsea Kitchen on 9th and 46th, and then probably walk towards Central Park. Where would be a good place to stop for delicious New York cheesecake? Thanks.

Krispy Kreme

All of the Krispy Kreme's in my area have closed also. They opened with such hubbub - lines out the door and off duty policemen were hired to direct traffic. I liked Krispy Kreme, however, I felt like I was giving my teeth an acid bath in sugar. If only there were some way to saran wrap my teeth but leave my tongue exposed for the fatty, sugary goodness. RIP, Krispy Kreme.

Restaurants near Gershwin Theater for pretheater dinner

RGR, thanks so much! West Bank Cafe looks really good. That is probably going to be the winner. Thanks for the suggestions for Nick's and Wu Liang Ye.

Restaurants near Gershwin Theater for pretheater dinner

pbjluver, someone did give me the link to menupages, thanks! It is a very helpful site - it's nice to know menu prices and options before going to a restaurant. There are just so many choices, it can be so overwhelming.

Restaurants near Gershwin Theater for pretheater dinner

Robin, for budget, I'd like to keep it around, say, $200 for the 3 of us. My mom's favorite food is likely American.

Restaurants near Gershwin Theater for pretheater dinner

My mom, sister and I are arriving in New York on Wednesday, 5/14/08 and staying until 5/18/08. On 5/14 we are seeing Wicked. We will probably have lunch at the Chelsea Grill of Hells Kitchen after we check into our hotel, which is the Westin at 43rd and 8th. I can't decide where to have dinner. What is good for a pretheater dinner? We've eaten at Ruby Foo's in the past and I have really enjoyed it, but that has been vetoed by mom and sister, although mom and sister aren't coming up with alternatives! I suggested Marseille and that doesn't work for my mom. I suppose I could make mom go there anyway, but she said she wants to stay away from French food. So, getting to the point in too many sentences, I'm looking for a restaurant with good American food, or maybe Pan Asian that is not Ruby Foo's that is relatively close to the Gershwin Theater, which is on 51st near Broadway. Budget is somewhat flexible. Just FYI, from reading this forum, I have chosen Katz's Deli for Thursday lunch and Trattoria Treclori for Thursday dinner, and Keens for Saturday dinner. Friday is still up for discussion. My sister told me I was like Julie McCoy in my planning of this trip. What can I say, I get hungry and I like to plan where we are going to eat. Thanks.

Reasonably priced Italian food w/a teenager

I learned of this restaurant from this forum but I haven't been there yet. It has gotten some positive reviews here.

It's on 47th Street between Broadway and 8th. I'm looking forward to it!

Lunch at Bouchon Bakery

A friend of mine recommended it and I've seen people mentioning it here. My mom, my sister and I will be taking a trip to NYC in May, and I'm wondering what to expect price wise. I didn't see any prices listed on their website. Will a party of 3 be able to eat lunch for say $75, or is it typically more than that? Is it relatively easy to get a lunch reservation, or is it a Babbo like place for getting reservations? Any other information is appreciated too. Thanks.

Katz's

Thanks MMRuth! I am going to NYC in May. I've been there before but this is my first time checking out this forum. I have gotten some excellent ideas so far.

Katz's

Does Katz have waitstaff or is it cafeteria style? Or do you get a table then go wait in line at the meat slicer? Or is it a combination of both? Or perhaps it depends on whether you are taking food to go. Thanks.
