Denver - dinner in the Highlands

Lots to pick from, what type of food are you looking for?

where can I get great sticky buns in Denver?

Okay, not classic, but yummy....bacon sticky buns at Euclid Hall in Denver.

Restaurant Week 2012- let's talk about it!

I went to Euclid Hall with my mom for Restaurant week. Very in-depth menu, probably about 80% of their regular offerings. For appetizers, we had Bruléed Center Cut Beef Marrow Bones, the bigger, the better. espagnole, sherry gastrique, toast, which was incredible, the sherry gastrique, really made the dish. Wish it came with more toast, but it was wonderful. We also shared as an appetizer, Chips and Dip, lemon goat cheese dip, oolong tea smoked duck breast, duck confit, Kennebec potato chips, baby dill, extra virgin olive oil, which was equally as good, the combination of the leamon goat cheese dip and tangy tea smoked duck was great, it was a good portion too, enough to easily share. For entrees she had Pan-seared Prime Tri Tip Steak, shiitake-fingerling-blood pudding hash, Onsen soft egg, ancho harissa, chives. It was okay, steak could have used more seasoning, tender but nothing out of the ordinary, the blood pudding has was different, egg was a nice touch. I had the Beef Short Rib Kielbasa sausage and a
Uncensored Hoppwurst Sausage, probably the disappointment of the eventing. The Short rib Kielbasa was dual, the Hoppwurst was good but tiny. The portion was very small and really served at a disadvantage on a plate literally the size of a saucer, over a few sprigs of kraut, I asked if it was always served on such a small plate (the plate of four mustards were on a larger plate) and they said yes. The desert was a hit, we shared two (neither of us drink, so instead of the beer offered with the 5280 menu, they gave us two desserts), The S'mores Pot de Crème, house made graham crackers and marshmallows was wonderful, very large potion, great texture and we also had the Bacon Sticky Bun, keg caramel, apple crème frâiche ice cream. The Bacon sticky bun was packed in the center with bacon and very tender, the apple creme fraiche was over-kill in my opinion, and the sticky bun was better on it's own. Service was great, dinner was a solid hour and a half and very enjoyable. I'd go back for appetizers and dessert, not sure about dinner though.

Denver Restauarant week newbie questions....

Okay, I see that the menus/resaurants have been posted, now what? Do I just call them to make reservations during that week? Any special tips, me being a newbie to restaurant week. And lastly any can't miss restauarants? Thanks.

vegan friendly restaurant near Denver convention center?

We were there Saturday night, a few adults and my four year old son. Had an incredible meal. They were busy, but took my son in the back for a kitchen tour and brought him out his own bread bowl, literally (a bowl of bread, with the inside hallowed out), kept him entertained all night. Wonderful dinner.

Taffy Addiction Delemma - [Moab, Utah]

Brown Betty Candy shop....I used to vacation there, best SWT ever, it's in Moab, near downtobn.

Vegetarian (maybe seafood) in Denver?

Root down is great! http://www.rootdowndenver.com/ I can't say enough about their food and variety. And they will honor any custom request, great food.

Cheese in Denver

www.blackpearldenver.com A bit out of your way, but a good cheese plate and a great, grilled cheese, with brie, apples and currant sage pesto. I've had hit and miss luck at rootdowndenver.com Again a bit more East than the areas you mentioned. The cheese plates I've had were good there, a bit more basic, but great combinations...however, the last two times, I was there, they were out of several. On the plus side, the brought us what they had, complete with sides (fruit, crackers, chocolate) both times and didn't charge us, but I would have rather they had the cheese options and gladly paid for it.

Buckhorn or The Fort?

Well waste might be a bit harsh, but for food quality, I'd suggest the Fort.

Where in Denver/Boulder area can I find Taramasalata?

I've had some at My Big Fat Greek Restaurant, but it was served as a side with one of their dinners and to be honest I can't even remember which one, it's been several years. But you might try calling them. 303-777-2391

Best pies in Denver?

http://www.grannyscottspieshop.com/

Great people to deal with and if they don't have the pie you want, they'll usually make it. They did a sour creme rasin for me that was devine and not on the menu.

Suggestions for Thanksigivng Dinner for two plus a toddler

Claire, you must try them, I think you'd enjoy it, be a fun place to review too. The Monk Fish with Quail Egg Ravioli is great, so is the Kobe burger with Pancetta and truffle mayo, especially for $9. And the pineapple Rum desert with Liquid Nitrogen Horseradish Ice Cream is quite different. I didn't care for it, but the rest of the people in my party did and it's really worth ordered, if only to taste it. I've only had one bad meal there, they overcooked my Kobe burger, I wanted rare and it came out medium. They actually boxed up the over cooked burger, and said, surely there is someone or some pet that could enjoy it and brought me a new one cooked as ordered.

Thanks for thinking of us Claire. We ended up at 1515 restaurant of all places. It was wonderful and I would say that there were atleast 5 other parties within view of us, that all had kids, from babies to about 10, very friendly and family oriented. I was super impressed, they even offered to put the kids food orders in early to get them started (which of course we took advantage of). I had an awesome Butternut Squash soup and Prime rib for myself. They offered pasta with butter or red sauce for the kids, with a side of cheese bread, among other things, but that was what my son chose. I called frist when we made the reservation to confirm, a toddler was okay and that they could cater to a vegetarian one at that and they not only said yes, they made a note of it on the reservation, when we were seated, the waitress, quickly addressed me, stating "I understand your son is a vegetarian, here is what we can offer him today", before I even had a chance to bring it up. Needless to say, we left a GREAT tip!

Thanks for the suggestion, but we are not Turkey fans. Hoping for some variety.

Suggestions for Thanksigivng Dinner for two plus a toddler

Actually not really, most are too upscale for said toddler. Not that he would not be well behaved and an angel, I don't want to risk that once every few months melt down and ruin someone else's thankgiving holiday. So please suggestions much appreciated.

Suggestions for Thanksigivng Dinner for two plus a toddler

Thank you for responding, I really do appreciate. Was thinking no one was going to.

Suggestions for Thanksigivng Dinner for two plus a toddler

Open to ideas....not huge on turkey, so it doesn't have to be a turkey only theme. Must have some sort of toddler menu/offerings..ie: noodles, pasta, pizza, anything along that line. Within 30 minutes of Denver a plus.

Critique my Denver list on food caliber and child-friendliness, please

I have a suggestion for the misc list...http://www.dbardesserts.com/menus.htm I have a young son, who is now three, but we've been taking him there since he was your son's age. Not only are they welcoming the bend over backwards. We've probably been there a few dozen times (hey what can I say it's nice to get out to somewhere other than Stubens with the kiddo, lol) and each time, they've offered to make him PB & J or noodles and cheese and never once charged us (although I've always tipped accordingly). One day when he was teething, they literally brought out half of an unsliced loaf of french bread for him to chew on. And now that he's comfortable there, when Lisa isn't busy (keegans wife) she will come grab him and give him a tour of the kitchen, which always ends in a doggy bag for him *that mommy raids on the ride home, lol*.

Looking for a non-noisy restauarant in Denver

I recently had this challenge with a friends 80 yr old Father, we did dinner at Tables one night and it was good, although he said the chairs were hard, lol. The second night we did dinner at Vesta, where he got a private tour of the kitchen, which I thought was great:

Viejo Domingo--NW Denver--thoughts?

Mixed, I've been there twice....not sure if I'd go back or not. First time, was when they just opened, had a wonderful Strip steak, good bread, good service. Note, at that time, if you wanted to leave a tip, you had to in cash or run your CC through twice, there ws no tip line on the slip. Service was mixed but good, they'd only been open about two weeks. That have a very loud stereo system and we asked them to adjust the volume, which they happily did.

I went back with friends 2 weeks ago and it was awful, so bad that two of the five people, sent their food back for being too salty and overcooked. You could not eat the steak, it literally tasted like it had been soaked in salt, the kind that makes you rush for a water glass. And the chicken was burned, actually black on one side and you had to fight to cut it with a knife. The brought out new entrees, chicken was much better the second time around, but the steak, still not edible and salty, and the second came, while originally requested Medium rare, was well done. It was removed from our check, but it was frustrating, as my poor friend, never did end up with an edible meal and picked off ours. Kinda spoiled the evening.

Atmosphere is cute, service nice, but not sure I'd go back.

Downtown Denver 50th Bday dinner w/7 y.o.

My 3 yr old son did Panzano at Christmas for dinner, just fine, in fact they were great. We did swing by the dollar store and pick up $5 worth of new toys that he could not open till we got there, but it was a great dinner, with 7 adults and him. They do not have a childrens menu, but made him half a grilled cheese and some noodles with butter and cheese and brought him a some sort of dessert, I want to say it was ice cream, but I don't remember, for $10. And they offered to bring his up first, so he didnt' have to wait, which was a hit for him...your 7 yr old I am sure has much more patience than my toddler, but I didn't want to push it. Also we sat up front by the window in a round booth (near the bar) and he loved looking out the window all night. I think you'd be very happy there.

Boulder County Farmers Market

It was horrible windy in the morning, in fact the vendors on the north side (not sure of the name of the street, but runs east and west north of Arapahoe, lost tents, lots of broken pots and platters too. I was impressed by the seedlings and starter pots offered, by the time we got done walking Pearl street, close to 1:30, they were selling them at 75 Cents each, great deals. Food court area was packed at lunch, you had to crawl over people sitting and muching when trying to reach the porta potty. Great to see so many people out supporting the local community.

family friendly lunches in denver and aurora

Yes, from DAM you can walk to the 16th St Shuttle and then walk to any of the ones I mentioned. As far as brewpubs, Wynkoop would be my pick. Buenos aires Pizza is suppossed to have great pizza, (I've never been there, but it's been talked about a ton) and is in the area. Rio Grande would be fun, great drinks, average food, coming from California, I have yet to find a great mexican place here, but it's downtown and a fun atmosphere. If you like Creole type, Gumbos is also downtown and right off the tree trolly shuttle. The 9th door is a solid suggestion for Tapas style eating. Zengo is kinda fun, good tasting menu on the weekends, it's kinda a Latin Asian theme, but I have been wowed by their tasting menu offerings the last few visits, although I can't say their regular menu has enticed me all that much.

I always steer my friends with kids to Vesta dipping grill in LoDo and D Bar Desserts, as well as snooze for breakfast, they have all been thrilled.

Running Post - DRW Reviews

Tata, I honestly can't make an educated guess....I'd like to to think they are scaled down, as I can't realistically see their stated prices and small plates, being any type of sucess, great tasting or not. That said, since I've only been this one time, I have read some reviews, along the similar theme (disappointing portion size), that were not conducted during RW, so it might be a grander issue that I thought. The food was good, but for me not wow, knock your socks off, write home to mama kind.
