Italian in the city

Don't go to Scarpetta - the service is just horrible and it is filled with tourists.

We like both of the Il Buco's but they're more Italy-Italian than American-Italian. A wonderful choice for service is Circo which has excellent food and value.

Goldenview Firenze?

Anyone been? It's where China White was in Greenwich. Wondering how it was, how expensive, worth a try? Thanks

Emeril's New Orleans Fish House at MGM - Meal Report

We had a great meal at Emeril’s. We let them know when we made our reservation that we wanted the chef to prepare a tasting menu for us.

This was the fourth or fifth time we’ve done this and it is just a wonderful experience. As with any of the celebrity chef chain restaurants, the chefs normally need to follow the formula set out for them. By asking for the tasting menu, I think the chef gets the opportunity to be creative and in this case, James Richards ran with it. We also opted for a wine pairing and our sommelier, Scott McSimov, was great.

We started with a glass of Roederer champagne accompanied by oysters two ways – first chilled with a raspberry granita, lovely greens with a lemony dressing, followed by an oyster shooter which was slightly warm in a cream, bacon and tarragon sauce. The shooter was a standout for the evening.

We then progressed to a light white and I did not keep good track of the wines. We had a lake fish from Iowa accompanied by ramps in an onion vinegar dressing with a few roasted potatoes. It was very tasty, light and delicious.

The next course was a lovely perfectly cooked risotto with fresh peas and seared scallops. This was finished with manchego cheese and a dash of chardonnay vinegar to bring out the flavor of the wine pairing for this course.

The next course was a take on smoked salmon. It was salmon roasted on a cedar plank with some chopped egg and roasted tomatoes. I’m not a great fan of smokey flavors but the chef should get an A for effort and creativity. This was paired with a Pinot which worked well with the bolder flavor.

The final savory course was very unusually prepared using what I think was the Modernist technique. The ribeye was frozen solid, then seared with a blow torch (if I remember correctly), then cooked for hours. I think the intent is that it becomes very tender and remains rare throughout without the gray edge. This was paired with morels, mashed potatoes and a generous amount of very tasty foie gras. The accompanying full-bodied wine from Spain was a good match – Numanthia Termes. The steak was not as tender as I expected, but was very tasty.
We ended with a lovely dessert wine – Kracher from Austria - the famous banana cream pie and a turtle cheesecake.

All of the portions were very generous and we could really only have a bite or two of dessert.

During dinner, we learned that there is a kitchen table where we can also have this experience. We may opt for that if there are more than two of us, but our corner booth was very comfortable and we consider this a not-to-be-missed dinner each time we visit Vegas. We finished the evening with a tour of the kitchen and an invitation to return at lunch the next day for the famous Po-Boy. We were in a food coma and passed on this, regretfully. The dinner was $90pp with $55pp for the wine pairing.

Worth a try.

Sage?

This is helpful. I'm looking for a not-to-be-missed Vegas restaurant and this one gets mentioned a lot. Sounds like we can take a pass. Thank you all.

How are the portion sizes? Is one of the prix fixe preferable to another? Thanks

Dinner/lunch near Arizona Biltmore

There's a good place right in the lobby for lunch. Also, TCooks is nearby and it is very good, pricey though.

Looking for Fine-Dining Recs.

Emeril's is still there in the MGM. We go there each time we're in town. They make a wonderful tasting menu.

Bar Rosso - Stamford

I really dislike the atmosphere though - feels very cheap bar like.

Toscana- Greenwich

Have not tried, but the owner freaks me out. He lingers outside inviting people in like they do at the tourist traps of little italy. I think he was/is owner also of Terra/Mediterraneo, et al. Arjomand??

ReNapoli in Old Greenwich?

Thought I'd followup my own post . . . About 4 tables of 4, byob, harsh lighting, excellent food. Mainly a take out, counter style pizzeria, but the food is very authentic Italian. Choice of three styles of pizzas (loads of variations), normal cooked menu items, Chicago beef and excellent salads. Very dedicated staff.

ReNapoli in Old Greenwich?

Just looking to find out more about this place. For example, could a group of 9 or 10 go there and be seated? Is there table service or is it like a pizzeria? Wine? Any details would be appreciated. Thanks

Penang Grill, Greenwich, Ct

We love Penang and go there at least once per week. My favorite is the big bowl seafood udon soup which just is very "clean" food. When everyone complains about fat and calories in restaurant food, this is something I feel I can eat without any consequences. If I'm having a bad week, I ask them to leave the noodles out and just have shellfish, vegetables and a clear broth. It's great. Service is great. There are many choices when you're in a mood to indulge as well. It's byob as well, so the bill is never high.

Birthday Dinner Prix Fixe with Wine Pairing?

I would appreciate a recommendation for a nice place to take a friend for his 50th birthday.
There will be 4 of us (2 couples) and I'd love it if we can have something for $150 or less pp.
They are coming in from NJ so would like the restaurant to be convenient to one of the tunnels.
Cuisine choice is open but we'd like a spot with good service.
Thanks in advance.

Tarry Lodge - any recent experiences?

I'd like to know more about the salmon carpaccio. We definitely notice an "underdressed" pasta trend there.

Emerson Hotel, Emerson

I can't believe it is still there. My father would take us there in the 60's and 70's and we'd have the steak with the flat, fat-soaked toast on the bottom. Then we would go somewhere nearby for crumbcake. It was a real fat-fest but I'd like to go back.

Glad to hear I'm not alone. Lots of places have good eats, but good people should be rewarded and lousy people should try to be nicer.

Lake George

Lake George is like a desert for foodies. Since you mention upscale, you might try some of the restaurants at The Sagamore. You can also take a dinner cruise. It won't be great food, but the views are great.

Reception Site CT/NY border

I'm not sure of costs, but there is a pretty stone building in the Renaissance hotel on the border of White plains and harrison. I went there for a daytime bar mitzvah and it was very pleasant. The Delamar in Greenwich might be a nice choice. We attended an event at the Harvest restaurant in Hastings and it was very pleasant. Cocktails outside overlooking the hudson and a simple dinner. Don't be afraid to negotiate for the price you need. Maybe you don't need a full open bar, but just beer, wine and some type of signature drink (harvest serves a wonderful sangria). I totally overdid the food, etc at my wedding and did not need half as much as I had.
Congratulations and enjoy the day.
