SeaSide Tomato's Profile
What is the appeal of Fox and Hound???
Super conveneient to me too, but I can not recommend. Every few years I give it a new shot. Been 3 times in the last year. It's really mediocre.
I like the bar side--the stone wall and fireplace are lovely, the decor at the holidays are really impressive. It's a great winter room. Nothing wrong with the restaurant side, but the bar sid eis really atmospheric.
I have yet to like-nevermind love- the food. Their menu reads well, but they fail on execution. their food's like a 5 or 6, when it out to be at least a solid 7 or 8 (with the occasional 9). I love the description of their duck, but it never pleases. Sigh, I loves me some good duck.
I will say they have a decent burger last time I tried it. Decent, not great.
They make a good martini (gin, dry for me). But they will only make one!!! (But you can switch to another , non-amartini drink).
That said, since it is so close to home, I will probably go again. BF likes the occasional PRime Rib and theirs is, well, prime rib.
During my "let's give it another shot" phase, I did get a Groupon--so I will be going again sometime soon.
I'd have to say it's a place tp have a martini, then grab a burger and a beer in the witer on the bar side. That's not so bad if you go in expecting that.
Feeding a new diabetic?
Hi Kajikit-
While I have no connecdtion to this man, i have read--and found great value in --Dr. Mark Hyman's books. You may have seen hom on PBS and sundry TV spots on health.
His latest book is "The Blood Sugar Solution." Having tested very high last month, I am doing his program and my numbers are coming down. I test upon waking and after each meal. It's up and down--not a straight line--but a line graph shows the trend is down--a lot.
As background, for the last several years I've eaten "healthily" --whole grains( brown rice, quinoa, millet, WW pasta-made my own WWBread etc.), grass fed, sustainable meats and fishes, local/organic (when possible) fruits and veggies, etc. etc. However, it seems even whole grains are killing me.
I cook most meals at home and so can control my ingredients. Going out was another matter--If ate out or at a friend's house 5 - 15% of the time, "i thought, well, you have to live on this planet."
Even still, having said all that, when my BS tested very high in early March, I ran right out and bought MH's latest. Moving onto this program was easy for me as I already ate/cooked in that fashion most of the time--I just needed to eliminate certain things: grains, sugar, anything packaged that might have sugar (in all its various guises) dairy. Oh, and no alcohol. I'm sure the vast amounts of wine I happily consumed helped create this situation.
So now, instead of farm raised eggs on WWToast for breakfast, I have them over tasty greens.
Dinner tonight was grilled: chicken, eggplant, mushrooms and onions. With a plenty of EVOO, balsamic, a bit of wheat free soy and some fresh basil. Two months agoI would have had that for dinner anyway--with some quinoa or rice. This has not been a heavy lift for the payoff: BS tests that are going down. While I'm not where I need to be yet, I am on the road in several short weeks.
I alwasy exercised-minimum of 3or 4 visits to the gym per week-6 when I could fit it in. Ow it has to be pat of every day.
All thi sis just to give you a recommendation fro "the Blood Sugar Solution" I hav always found Mark Hyman's recommendation to be sound and this is working so far for me.
Good luck!
Quincy--Pho
Thanks Folks-
We did go Friday night after a nice little side trip into the market--G-d I could spend 4 hours in there!
I got Vietnamese salad with chicken--very tasty--dressing just a tad too sweet, but beautifully fresh and nice flavors. and beef Pho with brisket, fatty tendon, tendon and tripe. I did not notice too much/any of the regular tendon itself (my favorite) but it was very good.
DC got springrolls, a beef/veg noodle dish and chicken pho. Liked it all-thought the noodle dish was ordinary.
The important parts were is was good, very fresh, service was stellar and friendly--they really aimed to please, There seems to be a full bar. It's very clean.
Still--I like the food at Pho So 1 in Randolph more and would drvive from Quincy for it.
Presidential Dining in Quincy/Braintree?
Glad to oblige.
Go n a sunny day--it's goreous when the sky and sea are blue...
You could bring a picnic--but Louis is good for casual.
Presidential Dining in Quincy/Braintree?
I read an Adams biography. During the Revluionary War, as a Ambassador to France,he could not get out of Boston Harbor to sail to France. He circumvented the British ships in the harbor by leaving from Hough's Neck--a lovely penninsula on Quincy's miles of coastline, who' very tip is Nut Island, part of the Boston Harbor Islands National Park. Google Hough's Neck for location--it's easy to find. Come in the late afternoon, take a walk around Nut Island- then go to Louis (also towards the end of the peninsula, right on Sea St., you will have passed it to get to Nut Island) for a casual dinner. Someone's up-thread recomendation for the Quincy historic tour is a good one--I keep meaning to do that. You could start with that, then head for the Neck. Cap your evening off with some music at "Presidents Rok Club" --which, BTW, I believe serves food, but I aint trying it. Have fun!
Quincy--Pho
I have no idea long this had been the case, but it seems that Pho Yuen Dong in KamMan Marketplace is now Pho Countyrside.
Does anyone know if it is just a name change and it's actually the same folks? I liked it when I tried it many moons ago as PYD.
Has anyone been?
Thanks!
PAD THAI HANCOCK ST. QUINCY?
Is this the place next to Wollaston Florists? Could not tell the name given the signage. I've been wondering about it ever since they openend but hadn't had a chance to stop in yet.
A rare night out with the wife
Devilham-have you tried Strip T's? So great--super casual, but we've had a couple of great dates there and the food is so spectacular. Perfect for sharing. sigh. I want to go there now.
Get a cocktail ahead elsewhere--or have one at home ;)
Anyone been to Pronti Bistro?
I wentonce shortly after they opened. got a delicious wrap--I want to say red fort?--it was a spicy chicken wrap.i got everrything I could on it (glutton). It was delicious. While I waited, I tried samples of a mango lassi-tast- and a realy good gazpacho. They were very nice. I can't say why I haven't been back, other than I'm trying not to be a glutton!
If my waistlie allowed, I'dgo again now. I recomnd it to anyone who asks aout food in that area.
Try it!!
How do you keep your schmaltz?
Thanks everyone--looks like i wil keep my frozen in the future for the ease of it.
Lunch off route128?
Not expensive, not a chain, ethnic (I'll call it fast Indian" for lack of better description) and right off128--Pronti Bistro on Highland Ave Needham. Very tasty and interesting.
Where to buy bluefish pate around Boston?
I've had great (!!!) smoked bluefish pate from City Feed and Supply in Jamaica Plain.
How do you keep your schmaltz?
When I roast my chicken(s) I drain any leftover fat into a glass container, cover it, keep it refrigerated, and use it as needed.
I went to get a spooful of some (monthish) old chicken fat last night. I had mold growing on it (WAAH).
You hear about folks keeping bacon fat (and I thought schmalz) for ages in the fridge.
How??
February 2012 Openings and Closings
5 years, Jeepers--I will think of Blue Pointe bistro as that newish place in weymouth I keep meaning to try. Ah well. Tempus Fugit.
TD Bank could replace Firefly’s Barbecue in Quincy
I hear ya. The three or four times I have been (a year + ago) were good.
At the same time, I can understand a new resto--not yet sure of how much business they can handle--would have to say no take out. But they should do so nicely!!!
Boston's best for cheap
second Bahn Mi (pho viet at Super 88) and second Strip T's (sigh!!).
Did your Valentines Day dining met your expectations? Do you rec it for next year?
I don' really like to go out on V-dy itself, so we went to--a place I've been dying, dying to have dinner--Strip T's Sat night (not because MC recommended it as a non-V-day way to celebrate V-day, but he did and he was right on!!) and we loved, loved, loved it.
For V-day at home we prepared:
Oysters (fun to shuck--say that ten times fast!!)
Grilled garlic-rosemary T-bone lamb chops
roasted lemon zested asparagus
Marsala mushrooms and onions over creamy polenta
Mr. Ribeye was in charge of the oysters and dessert and he did an outsanding job--Oysters were great (from Rocky Neck at Milton Marketplace). We never got to dessert. But we'll have leftovers tonight and finally try the gorgeous cake he got at Montillios--chocolate with chocoalte frosting, ringed with chocolate covered strawberries and shaved chocolate on top.
Can you tell we like chocolate?
Maybe V-day is a "Hallmark Holiday" from which so many industries simply profit, but I 'll gladly take any excuse to celebrate love and romance with good food, wine and the one you love--especially as it's now going on it's third night! What is wrong with that???!!
hmm, that's got me thinking about how to turn St. Patrick's Day into a celebration of food and love....
TD Bank could replace Firefly’s Barbecue in Quincy
I liked that Firefly's had music. We need more resto' s with good food and music. Italian woudl be great, yes.
Do you not like Basta Pasta? I have not been for a year or so, so can't say about recent experiences, but thought is was OK then.
Dinner for 6, when the table seats 4 and it's a small home
I like the plywood circle idea a lot!!!
RE: your folding chairs--if these are the standard metal/plastic chairs you see everywhere (church halls, conferences, etc) I wouid change those out, since you want to entertain more frequently. I do have some of those for "emergencies", but have phased them out and only use if absolutely necessary.
This summer I hosted a birthday dinner for 16. My sister wanted a lovely sit down dinner and those chairs were not going to work.
For $10 each, Ikea--I hope you are near one!!!--has a chair that is easy to assemble, with grey legs with white plastic back and seat. They stack easily so take up no more floor space than that one chair. I love them---thney are more comfotable than my regular dining chairs and they look good, too. They've alrdady gotten lots of use.
Good luck!
Any foodie book gift ideas?
I really enjoyed: I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti, by Giulia Melucci
Strip T's increasing funkiness
I found it much like old (retro-fitted) bathrooms in Paris or Rome (if not better)--which only added tro the charm!
Strip T's increasing funkiness
Oh my. It is everything evryone says. I had grabbed lunch there before, but was dying to try the dinner menu
We went SAT night--arrived round 7:00, had just enough time to order a drink before the two of us were seated (2 was easy vs 3 or more).
Service was warm, friendly and knowledgable. We ordered pig's head toast, oxtail-poached egg, grilled romaine, grilled octopus. And loved them in that order with the pig's head and oxtail way, way out front.
Aslo got a burger and wanted the bahn mi, but were too full for the latter. Excellent burger.
Can not wait to go back. Wish to death that they were in Quincy. (Speaking of which, this is what Remick's should be (but every time I go there the meal is a 5 or 6 out of 10-sigh!)
Strip T's was a 19 out of 10!!
And yes, the bath situation is funny--but the coooks were very friendly while I waited and I got a good look at their supplies--want someof that hibiscus!!
Nantasket in the off season
RE: Beachfire--Dear Lord-why cannot any resto make it in that astounding location!!??!!!
