SF Hound coming to Manhattan for one day
well, I see you agree about 11 Madison Park. Sounds like you had a very special birthday! Perhaps you'd like to suggest your choice for seafood...

shame they didn't wow you at vandaag. My experience there has been different and I am a forager myself, so I'm appreciative of the wild foods and the way they use them. Plus I thought the scandinavian might be something different for them. Since there are so many choices, it's hard to narrow it down without more specifics.
One other thing, yellowbrick1225, Marea is great for seafood. It definitely fits into the pricey category, though.

LOL-the concept of runners to get drinks while you're waiting is funny to me, though I know it's part of the scene there. Not sure it would work in NY! Anyway, I was thinking there would be a bar to sit at while waiting, but it sounds like you actually have to stand in the line, so....whatever works at the time, I guess. We'll probably go on Friday night.
Saturday night I made resys for Cochon. We'll either do the lunch or sunday brunch at Commander's-that one we'll play by ear. The rest of the time will be spent walking around, listening to music and dancing. Couldn't think of anything better at this moment.
And as for me, I appreciate both martinis and wine. It just depends on the mood...

not sure where you're staying, so I'll branch out.
I agree with Katz's for NY deli
If you're going pricey, I'd say 11 Madison Park, arguably the best or at least in the top 3, but don't know if you have time to make a resy:
http://www.elevenmadisonpark.com/
for Austrian try Edi & the Wolf: it's way down on ave c, casual, with a great atmosphere

their other place is more formal, also delicious and midtown:

You could try Vandaag downtown for scandinavian and they use wild foods:

I love John's, it's thin and floppy, but if you want Neopolitan, try Keste or Motorino
Also agree that you can't go wrong with Chang (Momofukus and Ma Peche) or April Bloomfield (Spotted Pig & The Breslin)
there are so many, so shout out if you have more specifics

btw, what's the difference between the first floor of Galatoire's and the 2nd? I see no resys for the first, only the second.

Galatoire's it is! I think I'll try Cochon, as well, and def parkway for the po' boys. Maybe Commander's palace for the sunday brunch. Maybe Brigsten's one of the other nights. I am not adverse to funk, at all, so feel free to let me know the high/lowlights there. Gotta be prepared for the left turn, since you never know what's around the corner!
Other than food, it will be about the music...drinking,dancing, etc. will try to see kermit, preservation hall, assorted frenchman joints.
CANNOT WAIT!
on the flip side, if anyone needs recs for NY......

Hi All,
Yes, I've been trying to get there since I was 16. Many years later, my dream will come true. I'm booked for thursday through monday. But with so many choices for good food, I find myself paralyzed and unable to actually make the resys. So I turn to you, dear NO chowhounders, to help guide my way. Here's what my vague plan is: I'd like to eat at one of the classics (Galatoire's, Commander's Palace, Antoine's or Arnaud's) on fri or sat. On the other weekend night, I'd like to eat at one of the more contemporary places (Cochon? Coquette? Patois? Bayona? Brigsten"s? etc., etc.) and by contemporary I mean regional with a modern slant. Also, I've read alot of the po' boys at The Parkway, but I'd like to hear what your recommendations are. So lay 'em on me!

YBOR CITY
i can see it's going to be a smorgasborg! I LOVE empanadas, but then again, there's not much I don't like! I feel like I need to have the 1905 and the cuban while I'm there, for sure. I think we'll probably get a bunch of dishes and share. My husband and I are huge sangria fans, so that's a must, but he loves the mojitos, too, so that will be a hard call for him! Maybe my son will drive home!
Anyway, sounds delish to me and I'm looking forward to it. I'll make sure and let you all know how we fared when I get home...thanks again!
YBOR CITY
Well, since I'm taking my sons out, I'll probably go to the Columbia. Sounds like they have ambience galore and some signature dishes that are a must (and I loves me some bread pudding!!). Maybe I'll save La Teresita for another time, as it's a short visit and I'll be with family mostly.
I never knew there was a substantial Columbian presence in Tampa. Learn something new...
thanks again and I can return the favor if you all need any recs in NYC.
YBOR CITY
seems like it's unanimous! Thanks for the input. Can I also ask about La Teresita?
YBOR CITY
Headed down to Tampa next week (from NY) and would like to have dinner in Ybor City on Saturday night. I would love to have some good cuban food and am looking for a good spot. Have done some preliminary research online and know about the Columbia, but not sure if I want to go there for the just for the historic significance. What do you all think?
in newport for folk fest
and I'm trying to decide where to go for dinner sat. night and sunday. one of the nights (probably sat) I'd like a place on the water. I'm trying not to spend a million, but I want good food and probably prefer seafood, so I know it won't be cheap either. Sunday I'd like something casual, but I can always switch my idea for the night if it works better for a particular restaurant. What would you all advise?
up to the minute recs for vieux montreal
probably will look for something besides Italian because...the husband is and I used to work in some fine italian places so I prepare it at home. But good to know, just in case. Is it traditional or modern?
Kind of leaning towards garde manger, since it offers great seafood and is, seemingly, a bit more casual. We have resies for APdC on Friday, so perhaps it will be a little different?
What bistros would you recommend?
up to the minute recs for vieux montreal
will travel for food, so...could you all help a NYer narrow the picks for some good local, creative cuisine in vieux montreal? Was thinking about L'Epicier, Aix Cuisine du Terroir, Garde Manger or Bonaparte. Which would you recommend? Or is there someplace else you prefer? Having not been, my research takes me only so far. And what about good seafood?
Thanks for any help you can give!
I'd like to say thanks for the recs...
I posted a couple of weeks ago-another NYer comes to SF- and got a rec for Bar Tartine. It was fabulous! One of the best meals I've had recently. Food, service and ambience were above average. It was worth every penny, and a pleasure. DH even noticed, and he's an Italian with a hearty, less-than-picky appetite. Also spent time in Sonoma and Napa. The Girl and the Fig was fun:unpretentious and very tasty. Ubuntu in Napa was very good also, but perhaps too much hype led to unreasonable expectations. I didn't feel wowed like I did at Bar Tartine. We had a great time on our eating and drinking tour of Northern Cal and I would be very comfy living in SF, should the opp every arise.
Thanks again, especially rworange(?)
San Francisco Restaurant Recomendation...
I was in SF recently and had dinner at Bar Tartine (recommended on this board) and had the most amazing meal I've had in some time. And I live in NY, so there's no shortage of good food where I live. Run, don't walk. It was that good. It's on Valencia between 16th & 17th, as I recall.
another NYer comes to SF
ok, so maybe no cp, but made a resy for friday at Bar Tartine. Still have to book Thursday. Maybe canteen, then. How about a cheap, traditional Vietnamese for lunch? Thanks for the ideas for Napa-someone I know also told me to go to Taylor's refresher, so I'll probably check that out.
another NYer comes to SF
Ah, thanks for this, daveena. Been digging more into the threads and have read much about Bar Tatine. Sounds good for the second night-Friday. I'm thinking we really should try Chez Panisse if at all possible. Is it an easy commute? We'll be relying on public trans, so...
Tried to get resys at Slanted Door, but couldn't. Now I'm thinking I'd rather do some little Vietnamese joint with great food. Anybody?
Coi might be a little more than I want to spend, since we'll be out every day and night for 5 days. (and that's coming from a NYer!)
Thanks again
any and all advice is greatly appreciated!
another NYer comes to SF
yeah, thanks. I did read that thread. More specifically (shoulda started that way, I guess) I've been reading about spruce, boulevard, gary danko, michael mina and a few others, but I'm trying to find out what fellow foodies are feeling right now. When I say "something more", I mean up to 30ish for the mains. Thought about Chez Panisse, but figured since there was so little time we'd stay in town. We'll be leaving for Napa in the am and coming back to go to the airport.
another NYer comes to SF
Coming to Northern Cal for the 1st time and would love a little guidance. We're interested in really good cal cuisine for at least one meal in sf. Will be there for 2 days, then on to Napa/Sonoma for 3 more (Already have resys at Ubuntu and Girl and the fig). Ideally I'd like to find cheap eats for one night and something more for the other. We'll be walking all over the place, so location is not a concern. Also love wine bars and have been reading alot about Cav. How is it? Is there someplace equally good or better?
btw, totally excited about the trip!
