best cole slaw?

Ina's (Barefoot Contessa) cole slaw is my absolute hands down favorite. I make it all the time. You should be able to look it up on the foodnetwork site under her name - try it! Oh and if you do, I typically double the vegetables and half the dressing and it is plenty and not drowned.

looking for dried figs in LA area

Let me know - I'm twitching w/out those black mission figs! But they did not say they were discontinued....that's important!

Santa Monica 3rd St. Promenade

The Yard is walkable however Stefan's at The Farm is not.

Best chocolate chip cookie in LA?

you can get Uncle Eddies vegan at Erewhon, Whole Foods, etc. they are good. But I had this crazy chocolate chip walnut cookie in NYC this summer from Levain Bakery - good god, not to be believed. You can only order and they are ridiculously expensive that way but treat yourself and your loved ones for the holidays - off the hook!

Turducken

third the sentiment....and I didn't even have to make it. Just ok.

Thank-you gifts?

Oh great call SilverlakeGirl! And a heckuva lot cheaper than my original suggestion.

Dinner "Specials" in Los Angeles

Fyi - recently confirmed w/ the Pizzeria that it is only M-W 9:30 - midnite at the bar so you might want to double check re lunch.

Thank-you gifts?

Lucygoosey-
So sorry I didn't get back to you in time. I read on one of the myriad emails I get (daily candy, etc) that they were doing something over the weekend. I didn't go but have been before. Their toffee is delicious, beautifully wrapped but not cheap! The space is small - mostly production - with a tiny counter. But they are lovely to work with and I highly recommend them. You can also buy some of their products at Silverlake Wine, Surfas and other retailers.
And while I am not familiar w/ L'Artisan, given the address, I'm guessing that maybe they are somehow related.

Oh man, this is too good and far too dangerous!!!! Thanks for sharing fluxmaster!

Seared foie gras in Los Angeles?

just had the biscuit & gravy dish for the first time on friday nite - ah/ma/zing! rich, certainly, but w/ a light biscuit and a nice bit of heat in w/ the maple, wow! enjoy!!!

Are all the restaurants the same for the dineLA extension?

it's down again - I think that they are adjusting the list of participants accordingly. also, if you registered for the amex special, that is NOT being continued.

Dinner "Specials" in Los Angeles

thanks - went a couple of weeks ago and it was really fantastic and well worth the $

DineLA- running reviews of places so far

Thank you for your thoughtful note attran99. You know I just couldn't believe it when I read your post and that we were there on the same night - I actually started to get angry. I do think that the fact you were there at 6:15 had just about EVERYTHING to do with it. But that is no excuse for a restaurant, period.

We too were excited about the concept and looking forward to the night. I read 'my last bite' and Jo has been there 11 times and raves about the food and the service and I too got excited from reading her posts. Though I am starting to think 'well, I guess it sure helps when you are a food writer.' ; )

And I don't think that the DineLA for this particular restaurant was a deal at all for what they offered but it certainly does give you the impetus to go. The four of us spent in excess of $100 per person (1 drink each and a bottle of wine) and for that I simply expect better service and better food all around.

Finally, I specifically had a martini (vodka) so that I could try the olive which was fun but one of my fellow diners had the same w/ gin and couldn't drink it.

I may contact them but, then again, probably just won't return.

DineLA- running reviews of places so far

WOW - attran99 - I too was there last nite and had the worst service imaginable (amuse bouche you say, really?). I'm guessing that the Roja room with a view of the kitchen receives better service? The host told us it would be a few minutes and sat us in the bar and left us until I said something and then we were sat in the blanco room, I guess.
Unfortunately I don't have time to write a complete detailed review at the moment, but while the food was fine, I just don't get the hype. Nothing was fantastic. Agree with your take on the eel taco; found the cheese in the philly to ooz and drip everywhere and the flavor just 'eh'; the Butifarra beyond salty; agree w/ you on the mussels; the shrimp was perfectly cooked though a tad light in the flavor department for my taste; the hanger steak was nice though a little too undercooked; agree w/ your take on the rasberry and mandarin sorbets; and the panna cotta had the consistency of runny yogurt i.e. NOT panna cotta.
We were not offered a chance to go to the other room or even told about it.
Simply couldn't have had a more opposite (and unappealing) time and am now angry that our treatment was so lame.
p.s. The scene there was the bastard child of Las Vegas and Bridge & Tunnel.
p.p.s. Really, really wanted to like it.

Mozza: the emperor's new clothes

Just did the Amaro Bar menu at the bar on Wednesday nite at 8 p.m. and the sound was fine and the food divine. No Budino on this menu (pizzeria only) but you can walk next door and pick it up at Mozza2Go.

Dine LA 2009 - Restaurant Week

I made a res too - very excited. But if you check the dinela site again (re the menu) I think it says something to the effect of 'these are representative, the full menu is avaiable' or something like that.

25 Degrees Huntington Beach

The first time I went we were actually blown away by how good the services was - thoughtful little things like splitting salads in the kitchen for us, etc. Since then, it feels a little like Ed Debevic's - any old skool Chicago people out there know what I'm talking about? But I can't say that I've had 'bad' service - just a little 'tude.

Dine LA 2009 - Restaurant Week

oh was Bazaar added just recently? if so, great and I think that's the one you should do - I've heard only great things about the food. I haven't been to many of those on your list, sadly, but for those I have: the food and service at Grace is really really good - and the bartender a doll; I've only had drinks at Craft but I've heard that people really like the outdoor Craftbar menu; I haven't been to the Foundry in a while but enjoyed it the first few times and if you like Jazz, they have a jazz combo there - not sure of the schedule but check their website. Hope that helps a little!

What to order at Osteria Mozza?

The menu has a lot of options - I would say go w/ what speaks to you ingredient-wise. The pastas are indeed 'primi' courses and, as such, not ginormous family-style servings. The nice thing being that you could have something that is otherwise rich (and wonderful), like the gnudi and not be overwhelmed. Just make sure to order the rosemary cakes w/ olive oil ice cream and rosemary brittle for dessert - really lovely!

Three Cheers for RH at the Andaz

Thank you J.L.!

Three Cheers for RH at the Andaz

Where is this? I feel so out of the loop! ; )

25 Degrees Huntington Beach

The #1 is my all time fave at the Hollywood location. As for the fries/rings coming as an appetizer, that's their thing, they do it that way unless you ask otherwise and, frankly, even when I did ask last time, they still came in advance. The chopped salad is also crazy good.
I've had Umami burger, 8 oz & Golden State (both walking distance from me)....25 degrees is still, by far, my favorite! Need to try that Apple Pan burger...
Damn you for making me think of that burger - it's almost impossible to stop! ; )

Dine LA 2009 - Restaurant Week

I did the DineLA @ Grace during the last week and enjoyed the meal very much. However, I do recall hearing that some of the waitstaff do not enjoy 'restaurant week'. But I did not experience that in the least, service was terrific.

I'm bummed that the Bazaar is not on the list this time - they were last time and we had to cancel our reservations last minute - still haven't been!

Though they aren't listed yet, make sure to check out the menus before you decide as they alone can be a dealbreaker generally. Seems a little late to not have the menus listed though....

First Peak: New England Style Seafood Shack Finally Available in LA: BP Oysterette in Santa Monica

Are you kiding me? There are posts for opening days and previews and soft-openings. It's all part of the game and fair game. Now, would I personally head to a restaurant opening week - well, the last time I did was a year ago at Animal and it was (and still is) fantastic! But I usually avoid the throngs and let things settle in. Regardless, I want to know what other CH'ers experiences were and wholly appreciate hearing from them...and you, thank you for your review!

Anything new around Hollywood and Highland in past year?

You were very close to Thail Town indeed - Hollywood just East of Western.

Dinner "Specials" in Los Angeles

A problem I've noticed with Little Dom's is their keeping that week's special updated on their site.

First Peak: New England Style Seafood Shack Finally Available in LA: BP Oysterette in Santa Monica

You are right, it did include fries, ha ha! Keep in mind that it's in the lovely (and pricey) West Village of NYC. They are all expats from the Pearl Oyster Bar. It was far too hot/humid for me to have a mayo based sammy like that but the food I did have was really great.

Anything new around Hollywood and Highland in past year?

Not necessarily new but I also recommend 25 degrees in the Roosevelt Hotel (24 hours - great burgers, good wine selection, beers) and wholly disagree w/ zjarrett's rec to skip Loteria (sorry!)!

Nice New Wine Store in Hollywood - Domaine LA

just noticed that it was being built out last week, thanks for the review!
