Leske's Bakery in BK

Is this bakery closed? I ordered a kransekake cake from them last week for a big party this weekend and they're not answering the phone. :( I'm getting nervous. Does anyone know?

Thx!

kransekake source?

awesome. thanks so much for the info.

kransekake source?

i need to buy a traditional kransekake (a traditional norwegian almond cake made of lots of almond rings stacked into a tower) and have no leads. can anyone help me?

Best French bistro in NYC??

i love balthazar too, but the waits are intolerable. like others said, you have to go for breakfast, very late, or at odd l/d hours to avoid waiting.

the raw bar is great, and so is the balthazar salad. their chicken sandwich is quite good, along with their mussels. i think it's the most enjoyable to sit at the bar, engage with the bartenders, crack a hardboiled egg or two/munch of cheese crisps and eat oysters or brandade or something easy.

i agree about lucien -- the food is wonderful, and the vibe is just right. artisanal's cheese is uniformly excellent but that place lacks soul for some reason. i went by last night and had the same feeling again.

bar boulud on the uws has really good terrines and charcuterie.

Gooseberries?

i'm planning and end-of-season fruit themed party for a large group and am wondering if you have any leads for fruit purveyors who carry rare and unusual fruit in nyc.

i intend to check out c-town, manhattan fruit exchange, and fairway/garden of eden/balducci's/amish/other gourmet stores for their selection.

i am hoping to have the most gorgeous spread of fresh and dried fruit (and some creative preparations) possible for this late date in the summer fruit season.

i am also planning a pretty party favor which involves gooseberries. i've been buying multi-colored ones, the really special dessert ones wrapped in paper skins, from varoius farmer's markets. are they still around?

thanks for your help -- i want this to be really special.

Gramercy Tavern - The best review I can write.

i must chime in. gramercy tavern is my favorite restaurant. it's always lovely, gracious, comfortable...the calamari salad is sprightly and clever (imagine a small shallow bowl of tender calamari ringlets dressed in lemon and pine nuts and carrot slivers). the cheeses are glorious. the service is crisp and proper in just the right way. and the butterscotch pudding! sadly off the menu now...i love this place and never tire of it.
