Like many others, the Jewish foods on the Jewish holidays. Matzah, matzah brei and matzah kugel on Passover, latkes on Hanukkah, and Hamentaschen on Purim. I'm a culinary Jew!
Locavore kosher chicken purveyor (NYC-area)
Thanks EvanM and Expenseacctfoodsnob. I'll look into those too!
Downtown Brooklyn Eats
When the weather's nice, it's lovely to eat outside on the Promenade. Lassen & Henning's Deli on Montague is a good place to pick up a sandwich on the way.
Locavore kosher chicken purveyor (NYC-area)
I'm wondering if anyone knows of NYC-area local chicken farms that provide chickens for kosher slaughter, or perhaps have a shochet come to the premises. Appreciate any and all leads!
Jury Duty in Brooklyn--Favorite quick lunches in Downtown Brooklyn
Walk down Montague to Lassen & Henning's deli (many veggie sandwich options available - http://www.lassenandhennigs.com/index.htm) then continue to the Promenade. Eat sandwich, admire view, return to civic duties!
Burger place on Smith in old Patois spot
We did end up at JB's, the formerly-Patois-and-Provence burger place and came away pretty satisfied. The burgers were cooked to order, tasty (if not fabulous), large and served on wonderful freshly-made buns with a side of fries and the usual condiments. Some of these cheeses weren't available so we ended up with American (I'd been hoping for Swiss) but hopefully they'll get that problem straightened out. The really tasty pickle on the side was a plus, as opposed to the not-fully-pickled and often floppy versions often served at diners. The price was just under $10 for the burger w/fries, which isn't bad at all. I think they're a good addition to Smith St. and I hope they can hang on for awhile!
Burger place on Smith in old Patois spot
Thanks boccalupo. I've been meaning to try the place on Degraw and I'm sure I'll get to it as the weather gets better. But the place on Smith is closer and there's an imperative to get home in time for DH to watch golf tonight (sigh).
It's definitely not a revolving door location (Patois was there almost as long as I've lived in the 'hood); my comment was made more generally. Pale attempt at humor? :)
Burger place on Smith in old Patois spot
Came back from a vacation to find that the Patois-to-Provence-owned spot on Smith is now a burger joint! The phrase "things come and go so quickly here" came to mind. Anyone tried the new place yet? Thinking about getting a quick burger there after work tonight and just wondering.
Los Paisanos- please help
Well, the good news is that I was able to stop by last night, the bad news is that I somehow lost the piece of paper with prices on it before I could get this reply to you!
But if memory serves, you're looking at around $10-14 per pound for the assorted steaks you listed above. They didn't have beef cheeks or brisket out so I couldn't scout prices, but I'm sure they have them. I have gotten brisket from them before but I don't remember how much it was. I'm not really much of a numbers person!
Anyway, sorry for the misplaced slip of paper, hope this helps!
Los Paisanos- please help
I was just there yesterday - had I known I would've taken notes for you! Yes, they're open until 7.
From what I recall prices range from $5.99 for cheaper cuts to $12.99 (I think) for sirloin, and probably higher for other things.
I'm a little surprised they weren't more forthcoming over the phone as they've always seemed very nice when I've been there, but maybe they were really busy.
Anyway, I'll try to stop by this evening and take some more specific notes on these cuts if I get home before 7 (I live around the corner). They're one of my fave local places and I'm happy to help an out-of-towner give them some business!
Spaghetti alla Carbonara
A rare chance to use a friend's backyard grill came and we couldn't pass it up!
Spaghetti alla Carbonara
Thanks for the recs! Turns out we've got use of a friend's backyard grill, so are going to have a Meat-on-Open-Flame-Fest for this particular birthday. But I'm sure I'll get to Fragole one of these days!
Spaghetti alla Carbonara
Although I'm not terribly far from Fragole and love pasta beyond all reasoning, for some reason I've never been there. But I do have a birthday coming up, so that might be a good excuse! Any particular pasta recommendations?
Schnitzel truck spotted in Cobble Hill
Hi, OP here. I got another chance last night too. I wasn't terribly hungry so I got one chicken platter with fries and salad to share with my daughter. Fried up to order (well, except the salad) and pretty good. And a great bargain dinner for that price, too. I'd like to try the cod next.
Schnitzel truck spotted in Cobble Hill
Got off the F train last night to the sight of a new schitzel truck parked on the corner of Smith & Wyckoff. I already had dinner plans, so didn't try them (I know, I know, not a great excuse!) but I stopped and got their card. The friendly schnitzelmeister inside told me lots of people had asked if they'd be back because they also already had dinner plans; he said they would. You can check out their menu at www.schnitzelandthings.com and can also click the link to follow on Twitter from there.
Has anyone tried them?
Excellent experiences with Dizzy's, Helios
I'm a fan of Helio's burgers; so glad to see them getting some love on CH!
Nuts in Queens or Brooklyn
I'm not sure if the Nut Box on Smith/Wyckoff in Boerum Hill roasts their own (doesn't look like, from their website), but it certainly specializes in nuts! http://www.thenutbox.com/aboutus.asp
Union Market (?) in empty Blockbuster space on Court St.?
There's a great produce place practically across the street - sure hope a new market wouldn't put them out of business. I've been very impressed with both their stuff and their prices.
Union Market (?) in empty Blockbuster space on Court St.?
Heard a rumor along the lines of a high-end or specialty grocery store called Union Market opening in the long-shuttered Blockbuster space on Court St. near DeGraw. Can anyone confirm any kind of info?
One night in DC area. Where?
Will be in DC this Friday, looking for a great, moderately-priced dinner place (approx $20 per person w/o wine) somewhere between tourist-DC and College Park, MD, where we're staying. Any and all recs welcome! DH is not an especially adventurous eater, but I'd love to try and persuade him to try something new. Thanks!
Advice for Casual Birthday Dinner in Brooklyn
I'm one of those posters that have reported good things about Heights Cafe for a special occasion meal, and went there partly because of what Fleur had written :). So I'll happily second her recommendation!
Advice for Casual Birthday Dinner in Brooklyn
Union Smith Cafe might fit the bill. It's in your preferred location and quite infant-friendly, non-ethnic with enough variety to satisfy 6 adults, and casual - might be too casual but that's obviously up to you :).
It's certainly not a foodie favorite, but I've always enjoyed my meals there. Based on the three you mentioned it might also not be "special occasion" enough, but I figured it was worth passing along the thought. Good luck!
Brussels Sprouts recipe?
These look wonderful! I made some yesterday, halved, sauteed flat side down in olive oil, then tossed a bit with salt, pepper and Parmesan.
Question though - after peeling the outer leaves, how does one keep the rest of them from peeling off. Every time I've made them I've ended up with much smaller Brussels sprouts than I started out!
Is it me? Could someone share helpful hints? Or does this happen to everyone and I shouldn't worry about it?
"Per se" - a morality play
Sam, I have often enjoyed your posts, but this one truly rises to a new level of genius!
Boerum Hill Food Company closed
I will miss it. I found it a reliable place for breakfast and I'd had some good dinners there too, before they stopped serving them. I hope oolah is wrong about this being the beginning of closures, but unfortunately I don't think so.
best place for an office holiday lunch in Brooklyn?
I'll chime in for Heights Cafe too. It's a short, easy-to-find walk down Montague from the 2/3 station, so is ideally located for your purposes. I can't comment on the crowds for lunch, but I had a large dinner party of about 16 there this past September and the service couldn't have been better (but definitely make a reservation). Everyone thought the food was quite good, and there's a wide enough variety that everyone in your group should find something to suit their tastes. It's much more casual than the River Cafe, but I think the atmosphere is quite nice, and a bit more upscale than the other places on Montague.
But I could also second the recommendation for Queen. It's maybe a block or so further from the subway stop than Heights, but an easy walk straight up Court St. that shouldn't freak out your Brooklyn-phobe!
Good luck!
Jewish-Style Deli Platters?
Lassen & Hennigs on Montague (http://www.lassenandhennigs.com/) did a nice job for the Kiddush lunch after my daughter's bat mitzvah. It was dairy/fish, not meat, so I can't vouch for their cold cuts. But there was tons of food and people were raving about the tuna salad. They deliver and the catering people were a pleasure to deal with.
