Harvest Seasonal Grill
Well that stinks! I am only reading this now and have a reservation to go on Tuesday. Fingers crossed it is better than you have heard. I will report back!
Good Eats in Goodyear, AZ
We'll be in Goodyear, AZ next week. Anything or anyplaces not to be missed? Would love to find some great Mexican food or great local cuisine.
Costco Meatballs?
Great, thanks for the opinions. Normally I make my own, but I just don't have the time right now!
Costco Meatballs?
I'm thinking of buying frozen meatballs for a party this weekend. Anyone who has tried them/has a preference? I'm not sure if there will be any choice in brands. Thanks!
Vetri Details
I believe I wore a skirt when I went, but nothing too dressy. There were people dressed up and people dressed down when we were there. Nothing to lose sleep over. My husband did the wine pairing, and I was planning to, but realized after reservation was made that I was pregnant. When we go back, we would both do the pairing. I agree with previous posters that said you will easily find help choosing a bottle if you want to go in that direction. Enjoy your evening, it was amazing. We did not bat an eyelash spending what we did for the experience of dining at Vetri and look forward to returning. Well worth every penny. Report back on your experience!
Looking for a cooking class/dining experience for a present?
I second the Viking Classes in Bryn Mawr. I have taken about 4-5 classes with friends and have really enjoyed them. Lorelei is an especially great instructor.
Funky Lil Kitchen
in Pottstown. Anyone been recently? I had heard about it a few years ago, and was wondering if was still worth checking out.
Lobsters main line or delco???
I was reading another thread about lobster on here yesterday. People had good things to say about H Mart down by the Terminal in 69th St. The obvious choices would be local supermarkets, my Giant had lobster for $7.99/lb yesterday, but I can't vouch for freshness.
Charcuterie ?
Depending on whether you want to eat at a restaurant, or get it from a butcher, the answer will change. I know that Craig LaBan had good things to say about Cooper's charcuterie selection in Manayunk recently. There was also an Inquirer article about a woman in Phila who is making all sorts of charcuterie...I remember the article mentioned wanting to add a "ham room" which was music to my ears. Forget the name though.
Quality sausage near Phoenixville?
Country Time products are also sold at Willow Creek Orchards in Worcester, which isn't too far from Pville. They also sell many Hendricks Farm products (their bacon is awesome), and I would guess they also make sausage.
Chinese Take Out in MontCo
Thanks for the suggestions, we will have to try East Cuisine. We liked Abacus for eat-in, but the place was so packed we couldn't easily grab a take out menu on our way out. We will give it another try for take out. *Wisey22- don't miss the "Shanghai wonton soup" when you go to Little Shanghai. It's my favorite- can't get enough of Chinese soups and this is my favorite.
Chinese Take Out in MontCo
I am still trying to find a Chinese take out place that I love near North Wales. Audubon has Little Shanghai, which I miss so much and is a bit far to drive for Chinese/get delivery. Any thoughts? We have had LaiLai and Hong Kong Kitchen...
dessert in philly
I was going to comment that I would eat and then stroll over to Capogiro. Hands down, even in cold weather to die for gelato. Thai Coconut Milk is my favorite recently.
Vetri
Not sure if I missed the boat or not, but the wine pairing will add $90 to the tasting. My husband and I ate there a couple weeks ago. Best meal of our lives. He enjoyed the wine, I could not (pregnant). Well worth every hard earned penny. My husband wore a collared button down shirt and jacket, but no tie. I would pass on wearing jeans.
Carlisle PA
Well, let's hope your daughter isn't deciding on a college based on restaurant reviews of the area. Unlike the previous poster, I am a proud Dson grad who loved my four years (and came from the Philly area). I had great meals at Piatto, California Cafe, Marketcross, Rillo's, Back Door and Faye's for bfast. There is good food to be had if you are open minded. It's no metropolis, but has it's own charm!
Where do you get your Thanksgiving Turkey?
I'm not entirely sure now that I think about it. I know that you can order through Willow Creek Orchards, so I sometimes overlap them. They are taking orders now to reserve thru their website. They partner with an organic place in Lancaster. All info on the Willow Creek website, or stop by in Worcester.
Spring House Tavern
My in-laws love this place. They go for the crab cakes and the shrimp cocktail. They did note that their prices went up recently, but I have heard great things about the crab cakes. We got them for take-out and they were great, just as Chef mentioned, no filler.
Where do you get your Thanksgiving Turkey?
I would get one through Hendricks Farm and Dairy, but unfortunately, we are traveling for Turkey Day this year!
restaurants in the Poconos
It is certainly not fine dining, but we love the Jubilee and it is now completely non-smoking, which is a plus for us. Great food all around. Prime rib and the killer fries are worth the trip and breakfast is always spot on!
Costco in North Wales/Montgomeryville
There are only two of us, but we always find things we "need". I love their spinach dip with Stacey's pita chips. I look forward to parties/summer to have the excuse to buy both. We do paper products from there too. As everyone says, you can never leave without a rotisserie chicken or two!
Bryn Mawr area- ideas for special birthday?
I have heard good things about Auspicious in Ardmore on Cricket Ave. BYO also.
Feasts, Fairs, Fundraisers
We look forward to St. Sophia's fair every year too. Can't beat it. Another thing I looked forward to when I lived in Phoenixville is the Orthodox church on the left corner, right when you come into town has great pierogi's, soup, etc for take out/eat in at lunch once a year. All made by the ladies there. So delicious. Not sure when it is, but I would assume it is a certain time of year.
Italian Plums what to do...
I just had the same problem last weekend. I made a great plum cake/tatin. Found the recipe on Food Network. It was great- kind of a plum upside down cake. Yummy!
Bliss: Good, not Great
Had dinner last night for the first time at Bliss on Broad Street and thought I would share some of my thoughts while the meal was fresh in my mind. The name is funny, since it sits on Broad, the bus noise can be fairly loud. Not blissful. I would recommend sitting as far away from the street as possible (the front opens onto Broad). We were in a booth, which was great.
We had the homemade gnocchi and beet/goat cheese/proscuitto first courses. The Beet/Goat cheese dish was the best of the night. Great combination and perfect for the season. The gnocchi was great, but the sauce overpowered the fluffy gnocchi with a crab/fishy flavor. It would have been better off leaving the pasta as the "main" character with a more basic sauce.
For second courses we had a pistachio crusted mahi mahi (a special) which from what my husband said was quite good. I had a taste. Good, nothing "wow" about it. I had the Pekin duck in a blood orange sauce. This dish was a mistake on my part. I should have thought through the fact that blood oranges are not in season. That being said, if the menu specifies blood orange, that is what it should be. The sauce/oranges were not blood oranges and that changed the dish. It wasn't what I expected, but was ok.
The service was wonderful.
At the end of the night, an ok meal, but not someplace we will make a point of returning to.
Where will you go back again (and again)?
Vietnam, Friday Saturday Sunday, Amada, South St. Souvlaki
Hatfield/Montgomeryville/North Wales Area
A little further away, but not far (I don't think) is Capones. They have a great beer selection too. Iron Hill can be tough to find a seat depending on the night. Great beer there too though.
New Bar-B-Que in Montco.
We are planning to pick up take out tomorrow to take to a friends house. If we were supplying the main course for 4 adults, how much would you recommend? It looks like we will do a mix of beef ribs, brisket and pulled pork (sides are already taken care of). Thoughts? Can't wait to try it out after all the rave reviews!
Any recent visits to Blackfish?
While the last time we were at Blackfish was in May, we were quite pleased. My husband has had the surf and turf each time we have eaten there (3 times) and enjoys it more each time. I had the bouillabaise the first time and was pleased as well. The smoked salmon/poached egg appetizer is also one of our favorites along with the beignets for dessert. Our servers have always been friendly, and we haven't ever noticed a problem with wait, even when dining with a big group. I'm surprised to hear so many negative comments, that certainly hasn't been our experiences.
