Jamaican Oxtails

FYI Strawberry's formerly on 7th Avenue has reopened on 135th Street near 8th Avenue in the space that used to be Home Sweet Harlem.

Looking for good mofongo

Washington Heights/Inwood Area (Northern Manhattan). Make a trip of it as there are also wonderful parks and historic treasures like the Dyckman House. Take the A train to 207 and anywhere along Broadway/Dyckman, that general area. There are a few Monfongo restos in the area.

Malted Milk Powder - Where to Buy in NYC?

I see it everywhere. You should certainly be able to find it in any regular market like Met, Associated, or probably even A&P. Check online - Pathmark and Fairwary most likely carry it.

Jamaican Oxtails

Under d Tree in Harlem as well as People's Choice also in Harlem. People's Choice is take out only but if it is a nice day you can sit in Jackie Robinson Park and enjoy them.

Harlem - Best Soul Food?

Type in Harlem and you will see this topic...every few weeks it pops up. Manna's is a take out steam table so I wouldn't categorize them with the other sit down spots you listed. Personally, none of the above. I would opt for Billie's Black or Melba's.

Garlic crabs?

Sounds heavenly. Reminds me of the delicious crab I used to eat in California. Considering the fact that Manhattan is an island you would think there would be seafood galore. Everyone always talks about the best seafood being at City Island. You might want to start there.

News on Trader Joe's on UWS?

agreed. and due to lack of space don't carry the same items as other TJs

I just found out that the Uptown Juice Bar family of restaurants now has another addition to the family. Heights Vegetarian is located at 1121 St. Nicholas Avenue at 166th Street.

News on Trader Joe's on UWS?

There is plenty of space in the Bronx as well - A Bronx location could provide adequate parking space as a bonus.

News on Trader Joe's on UWS?

...on the flip side most folks can't afford to do the bulk of their shopping at WF whereas I used to do my week's shopping at TJs and never step foot in a grocery store. I could get about four or five bags of stuff (wine, TP, etc. included) for around $50 at TJs. If I go to WF $50 will have me walking out with one or two bags.

"New York" Italian?

Arthur Ave. is the "real" little Italy. Lots of good places tucked away in The Bronx.

"New York" Italian?

Not always the case. See response above.

"New York" Italian?

I know of their rep...but there are been cases where ppl have been able to get in through persistence and sheer luck. You never know.

News on Trader Joe's on UWS?

I hadn't heard anything about this until I found this thread. We have been crying and screaming that we NEED a TJs uptown, but 72nd and Broadway just seems more of the same. We have plenty of space up our way...as a matter of fact, an empty grocery store sits vacant on the well traveled corner of 145th and Adam Clayton Powell, between two two subways lines and a bus that crosses the river into the Bronx. Not your typical TJs neighborhood, but when you see the number of Whole Foods and TJs bags being lugged allllll the way uptown from 14th Street it makes perfect sense.

Where can I buy Okra?

I always see it in the produce and frozen food sections but then again I live uptown. Try Fairway Harlem. You can order online if they have it in stock. Otherwise Pathmark.

Any new tea shops worth trying?

That wasn't really the issue. From the feedback I received it was a customer service issue. It also had some other factors working against it including location and price point for the area.

New found addiction to Nutella

I had stopped buying Nutella for two reason. One, they had started using hydrogenated oil (I recently checked the label and they stopped) and the price went up. I was in Stop Rite and they have their own brand that is imported from Italy for a full dollar less than Nutella and has better ingredients.

Great Cheap Eats for Weekend in Manhattan

Cuban food! Only open during the lunch hours in the midtown area. Wonderful selection of food with enough to share between $5 and $8, Literally a hole in a wall but the food is absolutely amazing! Seating in the back and order up front.

Home on 8th in Chelsea (I guess) offers a wide veggie menu of Chinese food at reasonable prices.

In Harlem there is the world famous Harlem Juice Bar which actually has a sister restaurant near 135th and 7th Avenue call Cafe Veg. Not much atmosphere but food is good as are the prices. There is a raw restaurant that is supposedly amazing called Raw Soul on 145th Street right off St. Nicholas Avenue. Strictly Roots is also supposed to be very good on 7th Avenue as well. Zoma is a nice Ethiopian place in Harlem on 8th Avenue that naturally offers tasty lentils, etc.

Thank you! I meant to mention that as well but got distracted by trying to link the two other recommendations. Also The Place has really good chicken. I actually had it at The Place Too but they closed awhile ago.
