Detroit Metro - SATURDAY Brunch recommendation needed

More of a brunch style menu - I'm not a huge fan of buffets (I think the quality of the food suffers). There will be 2 "foodies" and 1 "normal person" at the brunch so quality of food is important.

Thanks!

Detroit Metro - SATURDAY Brunch recommendation needed

Hi Hounds!

I'm looking for a "fun" brunch on a Saturday - preferably one that has cocktail specials. Royal Oak, Ferndale or downtown would be my first choices, but if there is another spot that is worth checking out, I'm flexible.

I have been to restaurants for Sunday brunch (most notably, La Dolce Vita), but I can't seem to find out online if they have the same setup for Saturdays.

Outside seating is a major plus...

Thanks for your help!

Fresh calamari in Detroit metro

I don't know for sure, but I would check Superior Fish in Royal Oak. Good luck!

Knoxville/Maryville TN - Thanksgiving restaurants

Awesome - thanks for the quick reply! We have tried Puleo's once and enjoyed it! Will check out Big Fatty's.

Knoxville/Maryville TN - Thanksgiving restaurants

Hi there! Visiting my parents for the holiday and everyone has decided not to cook! Am looking for some good options for the holiday dinner - would prefer to avoid chains, but if its a "local chain" and worth it, that would be fine. We are pretty adventurous, but probably want to stick to at least partially traditional since I know dad will want turkey. So - would appreciate suggestions that are not restaurants where we forget its Thanksgiving!

Thanks!

Dinner in downtown Detroit

I really like Tom's, but it doesn't scream "special occasion" to me. I would go with Detroit Fish market or Angelina's. If money is no object and everyone likes seafood, then Saltwater at the MGM would be a good "special occasion" place.

Also - Oslo is great, but its tiny and loud and maybe a little to much for a 60 y/o birthday (unless she is your "cool aunt"!).

Let us know where you end up!

Metro Detroit - Share info on great deals!

Hi Hounds!

Reviving this thread because there is new info! I just checked Wolfgang Puck's website and their 3 course meal is now $29 ($45 with wine pairings). I think it is only Wed, Thurs and Sunday.

Also, the Prentice restaurants have a $30 3-course meal "deal" with a glass of wine @ all 4 locations through the end of the year (Monday - Friday only). The menu's are on their website.

Keep 'em coming!

Detroit Metro - Restaurants with Birthday specials

Thanks RedTop! Actually, I was looking for restaurants that give a discount because a member of the party has a birthday. At the Ann Arbor restaurants mentioned by Jim, they discount the food bill 50% for a party of two if one of the party has a birthday on that day.

Detroit Metro - Restaurants with Birthday specials

Thanks Jim. I actually found their website and it seems to be a consistent policy at all of the affiliated restaurants - Gratzi and the Chop House.

I'm still curious about whether there are any restaurants closer to the metro Detroit area. Anyone?!?

Detroit Metro - Restaurants with Birthday specials

Hi All,

My boyfriend's birthday is in a few weeks and I'm looking for a good celebration location that may also have a special because its his birthday (hoping to stretch the food dollar!). My preference is Royal Oak/Birmingham/Troy or downtown - but am interested in all responses.

Thanks!

Detroit Restaurant Week September 18-27, 2009

Bumping this up so that we get some more responses! I'm going to Rattlesnake for the first time tomorrow night - will try to post my experience as soon as I can.

Detroit Restaurant Week September 18-27, 2009

Seldom is still open while its going thru reorg (as is Detroit Breakfast House). That doesn't justify bad food or bad service, but if you like the restaurant (as I do), you can still go!

Detroit Restaurant Week September 18-27, 2009

Good point about the salmon. I am also disappointed about Roast's menu. I know that they like to trumpet the "roast beast" but it would have been nice to have a few other options.

Arts, Beats. and Eats - Pontiac, Michigan

The art fair is a juried event and in the past has been very good. I'm sure it will be impacted by the economy (as all art fairs seem to have been) because artist can't afford to travel as much if the sales aren't there to support them. If you look in the Free Press, there are several articles about new restaurants to the festival. While AB&E did lose Chrysler as a sponsor, they are offsetting that by a $2 admission that is going to a number of local charities - which clearly need the additional support this year. Finally, all food prices are being held at $5 per serving and the parking lots (official) have lowered the cost from $10 to $8.

So - I'd highly recommend coming to the festival (and no, I don't work there)... I usually try to come at "off hours" especially if its hot out. Have a great time in the D - there is a lot to do for the holiday weekend.

Detroit Restaurant Week September 18-27, 2009

I would love thoughts on my "picks"... don't know how many I can get to as I am out of town part of the week and I probably can't eat out EVERY day...

Not in any order - please tell me the "must haves"!

Places I haven't been:
24 Grille - Book Cadillac
Cuisine
Iridescence - never been, but not all that excited about their menu for this week
Roast - haven't been, but reviews lately on this board going downhill. AND they haven't posted a menu yet... Low on my list...
Rattlesnake
The Whitney
Wolfgang Puck

I've been, but would go back:
Seldom Blues - love this place but been here most of all locations on the list
Opus One
Atlas Global Bistro

Not on my list, but should I try because I haven't ever been there??

Da Edoardo Foxtown Grille

Diners Drive Ins Drives visited Cleveland - Where did they film?

I'm going to be in Cleveland for a week for work, staying downtown... are any of these locations within walking distance or a short drive? Thanks!

Detroit or Suburbs Area - BDAY Dinner

If you haven't been - I would also add Seldom Blues to your birthday list. Its on the river downtown, and the view is great. On most nights there is live music (which can make it hard to talk at times).

Saginaw Area Restaurants

I never really had any "awesome" meals in Bay City. What you will get there, are great patios, overlooking the water. You may have to sacrifice food quality for ambiance.

Knoxville area - Meal Prep locations

In Metro Detroit, there are "meal prep" locations popping up - basically, they have a menu of up to 25 entrees/sides/deserts that you assemble and take home. The "benefit" is that all of the shopping and chopping, etc is done for you. Its a fun "girls night" out and ends up being a resonable price for a meal.

Anyway - its good for busy professionals/families and also would be good for someone who isn't able to prepare healty meals for any reason.

Knoxville area - Meal Prep locations

Hi y'sall! CH'er from the north who is coming to K'ville to visit my parents and am interested in finding places where you can put together entrees where all of the other work is done already - we have a lot of these in the Detroit area. Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Saginaw Area Restaurants

About 20 minutes north-ish of Saginaw is Midland. In Midland I would recommend Cafe American for lunch - very creative salads and good soups. Genjis is a Japanese hibachi restaurant - not especially creative, but a change of pace from what you will find in mid-Michigan. They also have sushi. In downtown Midland (a small mainstreet downtown) there is a new "upscale" restaurant called the Table Restaurant - its new since I moved away, but my "chow-ish" friends like it. Omelet's and More is good for breakfast (also on Main Street) . Finally, in the middle of nowhere (Willard, MI) is a place called Shari's - its the "special occasion" place to go. Hopefully that helps.

Detroit & Royal Oak area, Michigan, this weekend - help with foodie finds, esp. Mexican

BBQ - Memphis Smoke is OK and it does have a great rooftop deck and live blues on most nights, but it doesn't compare in food quality to Slows BBQ downtown.

Bastone in Royal Oak is a favorite of mine - I take all of my out of town guests there because its the food is consistently good, prices are reasonable and the menu is diverse enough for picky eaters.

D'Amatos for italian

Town Tavern - consistently good

Fly Trap - I have never had a bad dish there - both breakfast and lunch items are awesome. I also really love Toast (Ferndale location) for breakfast.

Cafe Via in Birmingham, MI?

I have heard that it has been packed and that lunch is a better bet for not having to wait. But I haven't heard anything about the food - other than the reviews in Freep, etc. I'd love a review if you actually get there!

So, Kirks BBQ in Birmingham, MI? Um, pricey!

I have been to LDV a number of times - always in the summer and for brunch. They have bottomless bloody marys/mimosa's at brunch. Brunch is outside at a great patio that somehow shields you completely from the fact that you are sitting along Woodward. Unfortunately, the atmosphere was better than the food - which isn't to say the food was bad - just unremarkable. However, the Il Posto chef came over to LDV recently and I am looking forward to seeing if there are any changes in food quality. I will be happy to report back after my first patio brunch of the year!

? Ramps & Fiddleheads in SE MI Markets

Thanks everyone for the follow up on Fridays in RO! I had no idea!!

Metro Detroit - Share info on great deals!

Here's another... The Whitney

During the month of May, the Whitney is offering a two-for-one entrée deal on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 5 and 7 p.m.

Also, they are switching to a buffet brunch instead of menu based. It is $34, including mimosas but not tax or tip. Reservations are taken starting at 11 a.m., finishing up with the last ones at 2:30 p.m. (not exactly a "deal" but good CH info...)

SF Hound Visiting Detroit Suburbs - Any Must Eats?

I second this question, while not bad food, its not local and is a chain...

Thanks for the reviews so far! I haven't made it to Roast yet, but its high on the list...

Mark - FYI, the Royal Oak market (I believe) is just on Saturday.

Mexican Breakfast in Detroit?

Also not in Mexican Village, both Toast and the Flytrap in Ferndale have versions (different from each other). I really like the one at Flytrap.

SF Hound Visiting Detroit Suburbs - Any Must Eats?

If you have time to make a trip downtown, there are many good options. For the meat lovers, Roast is getting a lot of good reviews on this Board. I am personally a huge fan of Slow's BBQ - its in an old part of downtown with not much else around, but has great food, beer & scotch selection.

The Novi/Canton area is supposed to have some very good Japanese choices - I'll leave it to others to comment.

Ann Arbor also has good Indian options.
