ISO: Must eats during trip to Raleigh

One of my lunch favorites is Neomonde Restaurant and Deli on Hillsborough St., a few miles from downtown. The make-your-own-combo allows you to try the falafel, rice and lentils, stuffed grape leaves, fattoush, hummus, tabbouli (all my favorites), or chicken salad, tuna salad, chickpea salad, kabobs, etc.

The Fresh Market?

Shopping at the Fresh Market is the most serene, pleasant grocery shopping you will ever do. Start with a sample cup of coffee, enjoy the classical music (no crappy pop music, or overhead paging for help in bulk foods aisle), get a refill on your coffee. Buy the bulk herbs and spices because the price is great, compared to bottled at any regular grocery store. Buy meat and fish because it's really fresh, and looks, and tastes, great. Up until March, I used to buy a dozen roses each week, because TFM sold them for $7.99. I'm still adjusting to the new price, $8.99, so I haven't bought them recently. Try all the weekend samples, as they will quell your hunger enough to finish your shopping, without going overboard. I have a friend that works for TFM, and he assures me that if you want black-eyed peas in Minnesota, the store manager can get them for you. In short, buy fresh stuff at The Fresh Market. Buy the rest at your nearby grocery store.

I DON'T shop at TFM for things like laundry detergent, dish detergent, toilet paper, coffee creamer, etc.

Help - why did my Tom Yum soup go bitter [Moved from South board]

I think carolinadawg is probably right about the "Home Cooking" board, but, I feel compelled to put in my two cents here, anyway.

I've made several versions of Tom Yum, and other Hot and Sour soups. They all seem to lack the "hot and sour" on the second day. Just add more "hot and sour", to correct. I think the bitterness must be due to the leftover lime half-- the peel and pith of a lime are very bitter.

Pleasant, dim-lighting, sort of elegant, club-like, great place to meet friends for a drink and appetizers. Convenient location for Raleigh/ Cary/ Apex/ Holly Springs/ Fuquay, etc. at Crossroads Plaza.

Real Mexican Food

There's a gas station on 1010 road, in Cary, just across from Knight's Play Golf Club, with the best tacos in town. Ask for the steak or chicken tacos with all the extras, cilantro, lime, radishes, avocado, and corn tortillas. Perfection, in a tortilla!

Jibarra, Raleigh

I've been there twice in the last month. We loved the cilantro-pear margaritas, and the pork taco appetizer. The complimentary little appetizers were wonderful, too. We had venison/meatloaf, fajitas, and a fish dish. All were very good. This is a great choice for high-end Mexican.

Umstead (Cary) bar and food

Is this Heron's? I had one dinner there, a drug-company-meal, which usually means less than stellar, compared to the "regular" experience at the restaurant. As usual, things were hectic, there weren't enough seats for the participants, entrees were okay, but not great. The atmosphere is quite serene and beautiful, though. I would love to spend a night in the hotel, and experience the whole "Spa" atmosphere.

Nightly Dining Specials in Raleigh NC

Bentley's, at Crossroads in Cary, has M-F evening appetizers for $5. I like the portobello mushroom, and the crabcake. My husband likes the Ahi tuna, and the lambchops (3!).

Bentley's also has drink specials on several evenings, M-F, I think, but, my favorite is Wednesday. All by-the-glass wines, and wine-flights, are $5. Sonoma Cutrer for $5/glass is a great price!

The bar staff people are great, too. They remember regulars by drink and/or name. Very comfortable place to go. Nice, live, music on some nights.
