Revisiting La Herradura in New Rochelle

i believe that while in an effort to make the food and decor "gringo" friendly, the restaurant has become quite popular and much more busy- (especailly on thursdays for the live mariachi music)-- the food has become more mild and americanized...
i have eaten there the last 3 thursdays and have enjoyed the crowd, the music, and the pleasant service... the food has been good but not awesome...my favorite was the enchildas mole - which had a rich, homemade mole sauce...
i would reccomend it as a good place to take friends who are not so gastronomically adventuresome or go just for fun on thursdays for the mariachis....
enjoy

Sal's Pizza, Mamaroneck

i love pizza and for me i have a taste for different pizzas at different times... Sal's remains a sometime favorite- especially a regular slice when they are busy and the chesse -sauce and dough are melting together...
one of my new favorites is "Pi" on north avenue by iona college( new rochelle)... they have an awesome crispy-thin crust pie with great cheese and slightly spicy sauce... your best best is to eat there before the crust loses its crisp...
in pelham the sausage slice at pelham pizza- blows me away.
i could go onand on
enjoy!

Awesome new thin crust pizza/ Southern westchester

Stopped by Pi and had the, hands down, best thin crust pizza i have eaten in a verrry long time. The crust was thin but still had some dough to it and was nice crispy, the sauce thick with a good fresh tomato taste and a just right layer of quality mozzarella. I had anchovies which are not everyones favorite but they just put me over the top. My dinner partner, who is on a low carb kick- raved about his chicken ceasar salad and even broke down and ate a slice of my pie!
The place is simple with a range of pizzas, some basic pastas and a few heros/wedges. They seem to do alot of take out with a few tables and counter service. The next table over had brought a bottle of wine and seemed to be loving their pasta. Its on North Avenue in New Rochelle, 1 block south of Iona College. ( the name is actually the mathematical symbol Pi - so i I don't know how it is listed in the phone book)
Enjoy!

First CSA Delivery

sounds great,
any idea how i can get sign up - contacts. etc, i live in lower westchester county?

Del Posto Last Night- A bit of a disappointment

I took my partner and his best friend last october for his birthday. we all left disappointed. the decor was dramatic and shiny, but the details are not maintained. the food had a few highlights, but overall just average in a town with many great places to eat italian food. we did have good, albeit overpriced wine. the big tables that were eating and drinking alot did seem to be having a ball. personally, i am not a big fan of expensive restaurants but enjoyed my birthday dinner at daniel 100x more overall.

Brunch or coffee near New Rochelle train station

You may want to try G-Bakery. It is a columbian bakery with good emapanadas( yes for breakfast), pastries and a couple of egg & arepa dishes. It is very casual and there are not many tables so your group will have to be flexible about seating. G-bakery is located on North Ave, 2 blocks south of Main Street, about a 5-7 minute walk from the station. One of my favorite spots for a non-american breakfast break. Enjoy!

Good "ethnic food" within 20 minutes of Somers Point?

thanks! had a great lunch at little saigon- loved the grilled beef with vermicelli and awesome coffee... will definitely be back during my next visit... will send my friend to scout out both mexican restaurants.

Touring Amusement Parks, want good chow in PA, VA, MD

After Knobels you may want to try Massers Restaurant (right down the road in Paxinos-a small town about 3 miles from the park)... they have great local pennsylvania german food.Think smoked sausage, & pork chops, country ham, filling etc. It's the closest you'll get to mom's home cooking. It is verry laid back and kid-family friendly. Ask any local, but be sure to ask for the restaurant- they also have a meat store nearby that is very popular. I stock up on my smoked meats regularly there. Enjoy

Good "ethnic food" within 20 minutes of Somers Point?

Visiting my favorite foodie friend who just moved to Somers Point. Any suggestions for any good-great ethnic restaurants. Thanks

Tapas in Westchester

My favorite is Espana in larchmont. Great selection of wines, good tapas and main dishes, nice atmosphere and helpful staff. It is small, so you may want to make a reservation -especially on weekends. Best for 2-4 people. I always leave feeling happy and content. Enjoy!

Any good and inexpensive chinese, vietnamese, asian in lower westchester county?

Any good and inexpensive chinese, vietnamese, asian in lower westchester county?

Love all types of asian food and tired of going down to chinatown or sammys noodle house in the village for food that is inexpensive and good. Any suggestions?

Which Mexican in New Rochelle Tonight?

it probably was little mexican cafe.
Mexican Corner is also very good with excellent mole, but doesn't have tableside guacomole.
Herradura- between the other two on main street is also good with a free mariachi band most thursday nights.
For something a little different try Talaquepaque( sorry for the spelling) it is great , with an exuberant host and food from a different region of mexico ( it is on north avenue, west of the train station and the entrance for I95, there is a tiny public parking lot next door)
new rochelle has many typical mexican restaurants.. most of which are quite good...
enjoy

White Plains must-eats for Manhattan foodie

they serve dinner- but may be closed on mondays
they also seem to open for lunch most days...
if you are around new rochelle earlier in the day(breakfast -lunch) you might want to try G-bakery ( a columbian bakery) for some great empanadas, interesting breakfast specials and pastries. they are on north avenue, east of main street in the shopping center across from the mormon church

White Plains must-eats for Manhattan foodie

i would try any of the "saltado" - a stir fry over homemade french fries and rice(alot of carbs but oh so good!)- which you can have with beef, chicken or seafood
i also enjoy all of their seafood dishes, but as UB notes everyone has their personal favorites
most peruvian food is well spiced but not hot-- but you can add some hot sauces that will really light your fire...
have fun, take a few friends and try anything -everything that sounds intertesting
enjoy!

White Plains must-eats for Manhattan foodie

cholo's kitchen is the peruvian restaurant and speckled door is the irish pub

White Plains must-eats for Manhattan foodie

i agree with jan
come to downtown(main street) new rochelle and experience the diversity of what is now a true suburban NY town. within a few blocks are three good authentic mexican restaurants, a good irish pub, good upscale indian and a fantastic home style peruvian eatery. if i had to pick only one it would be the peruvian restaurant- since you don't see many in manhattan- the food is very good- service warm- and everyone seems to be happy and comfortable there...
can't help too much if you are looking for a chain restaurant since they are not generally my favorite...

Italy comes to New Rochelle...

Be forewarned...I had one of the most embarrassing moments in 25+ years of dining at Spadora.
After reading a glowing review by our Mayor, I made a Friday evening reservation for 2 at 8PM. I arrived a few minutes early with my friend( whose family once owned a restaurant in Rome), excited to have a wonderful experience.
The harried host explained that the table would be a few minutes and walked away, leaving us marooned in the doorway- which is actually in the dining room, in our coats, holding our bottle of wine. Another couple entered 10 minutes later and were seated. We stood and waited .FIVE minutes laterwe were seated and a bread plate and napkin placed before us without a comment. The couple who entered after us were given table set ups-menus- bread- water and placed their order. We sat at our table with nothing waiting for someone -anyone to let us know we were there. Fifteen minutes later my friend completely lost his cool and left the restaurant. Finally, when I got up to leave the owner came overto ask if anything was wrong. She said she was sorry and were working without a busboy.
Needless to say I left.
This would have been bad experience in a large impersonal space, but in a small (30 seat) room with 1host and 4 servers it was unforgiveable.
So I am sorry I may have missed some great food... but it is unlikely i will return.
PS: the night was salvaged by a quick jaunt over to Pelham, where we shared a great meal at cafe Regatta. We both felt the owners and staff of Spadora should visit and get and understanding of how to treat customers.
