Bars in Eastern Jackson Heights

Jeff, the name Post Time kind of makes me think of a gambler's hangout. You know....post time at the racetrack. I could be wrong though.

Fried chicken in Woodside area

I love UFC and don't consider it pricey at all! My husband and I usually order the small combo which consists of drumsticks and wings. You get 9 pieces of chicken total. The drumsticks are huge! You also get a choice of cole slaw, macaroni or garden salad with your order...all for $8.99

Cupcakes in Queens?

The folks at Cannelle Patisserie claim to use Swiss butter in all their pastries.

Valverde (Astoria) question

Thanks for the quick replies guys. Will post about our dinner if we decide on it.

Valverde (Astoria) question

I've been wanting to try Valverde for a while now, and I may have that opportunity tonight as I'll be hanging out with some friends for dinner. My husband and I can pretty much eat anything, but our friends would prefer eating low fat and vegetarian options. Is Valverde a good choice, or should we look elsewhere? Alternative suggestions also appreciated. TIA!

Canelle Patisserie - Cakes?

Organization is definitely still a problem. A customer should not have to report spills, lack of napkins, etc. There should be someone in charge of periodically sweeping up crumbs and empty sugar packets. On one visit, I remember watching a customer clean up a hot chocolate spill on the floor. The staff did nothing to address this. They let her clean it up. I approached the counter and requested that someone mop up the area. They were obliging, but did I really have to do this?

All the above being said, I absolutely am in love with the pastries. My favorites are the croissants, the lemon muffins/mini cakes, call them what you will, they're delicious. Janie, I can eat one of those babies in its entirety with no problem and then possibly follow it up with a croissant! Did I mention how much I like this place? Others seem to be enjoying it as well as they seem to be doing great business, both eat in and take out.

By the way, I haven't seen the crepes in a while.

Ecuadorian options close by 7 train stops

Brian, it sounds like you may have had a Casuela de Marisco, although I don't recall if this particular dish is prepared with a cream sauce. Have you ever tried the Sango de Camarones....somewhat like a porridge prepared from mashed green plantains, also traditionally prepared in a clay pot? I haven't come across these dishes lately, but to be completely honest, I haven't been to an Ecuadorian place in a good while.

Another Dunkin? That's odd that they would open another location so nearby.

I guess then that we can agree to disagree. After trying a few of the Ambrosia offerings, I discovered that they're just O.K. and pretty expensive. Their scones are a bit on the oily side and leave a greasy residue. The rosemary scone is much too dry. Too much inconsistency going on with the baking. Again, I find it just O.K. and really don't understand the hype behind the products. There's a brownie that I like though, but then again, I adore chocolate!

Are there real french Bretagne crepes in Queens? Help us Cannelle in JH!

About 3 weeks ago, I noticed some packages inside the display case at Cannelle labeled crepes. The girl behind the counter said they were not for sale, so I'm wondering if they were made for a special order?

Janie, the Cannelle website has the e-mail address for pastry chef, Perrenou. Why not drop him a line or 2 and ask? It would be awesome if they added crepes to their already amazing collection. I was there earlier today, and both pastry chefs were out and speaking to the customers at the tables. They really seem eager to please, so it's worth a shot to ask them.

Many years prior to Lety's or Cannelle, I would buy Carollo's 7 layer cake. It was pretty good and served its purpose...those days when I just had the strong need to eat cake!

O.K. so today I decided to experiment and went ahead and ordered a soy milk latte. I have to admit that I've been a bit apprehensive about doing so, simply because I was concerned that the soy milk would overpower the flavor of the coffee. I went ahead and ordered a large...it was delicious! I can't tell you how happy I am that now I can have my latte and enjoy it too! No more worries about lactose. YEAH! The shots of espresso are so flavorful that I didn't even give a second thought to the fact that it was prepared with soy milk. Like I stated above, I ordered a large, so I assume that the small latte is even more infused with the wonderful flavor of their coffee. By the way, not only was my latte delicious...it was beautifully frothy as well!

Espresso 77 in Jackson Heights

Hondo, they do offer soy milk, and I believe they may charge 50 cents extra for it.

Espresso 77 in Jackson Heights

Thanks for the head's up on the Cannelle croissants Amanda. I didn't know they were doing this, even on an experimental basis. It would have saved me all my trips to Cannelle just for croissants.

A while back, I mentioned an organizational issue I noticed to the manager. There have been times when I've gone, and had 3 people tending to my one order when there is a line forming behind me. One will get my coffee. Another toasts the bagel, another gets the pastry. I just feel it's too many people taking care of one customer. Meanwhile, the line is getting longer and longer. I do think that the cash should be handled by one person alone though.

Inexpensive grocery items that are surprisingly good

I like the La Fe brand Guava Paste sold at most NYC supermarkets. It's $1.79 at my local market. I prefer it to the Goya brand. I'll usually serve the guava paste with the Tropical Queso Blanco that costs $3.99 for 1 lb.

I also love Heinz ketchup. I recently bought a bottle of Muir Glen ketchup. It was awful!

Janie, it had the white glazed topping, which made the writing look flawless. The topping didn't have the chocolate marking on it though. It was very smooth and resembled a mother of pearl finish. The cake and writing were very elegant in appearance.

I stopped by Cannelle yet again this a.m. There was an absolutely gorgeous birthday cake waiting to be picked-up in the display case with the message "Happy Birthday Collette" delicately piped in script. It was not your traditional type of round cake...this was more of a very large pastry somewhat similar to a Napolean. Very original, and another work of art. Whomever you are Collette, I'm sure you and your guests are going to be very happy and impressed with your cake!

Espresso 77 in Jackson Heights

OMG! If Espresso 77 were to do this, my waistline would be in major trouble as I live right up the street from them.

NYE, which Rosa's pizza are you referring to? The one in the mini mall north of Northern Blvd?

Canelle Patisserie - Cakes?

sharon, during the holiday season, I was there every single day. YIKES! It was pretty embarrassing, but I didn't care. :) I'm only a 10 minute walk away from them....deliciously and dangerously close! Nonetheless, I now try to limit my visits to the weekends and any off days during the week. I'm glad that Jackson Heights can claim Cannelle its very own!

I'll add to the mix by giving the thumbs up to Espresso 77 for their absolutely awesome coffee and to Cannelle Patisserie for their out of this world croissants and and French pastries.

Canelle Patisserie - Cakes?

So far, we've had two occasions where we've purchased cakes from Cannelle. We've purchased the pineapple coconut cake and also the black forest cake. Both were outstanding and received rave reviews from our guests. As a matter of fact, people asked me where I had purchased them. The pineapple cake has fresh pineapple as opposed to that gooey canned stuff. The flavor and aroma of the chocolate in the black forest cake were strong and not overpowered by the other ingredients. This is my favorite cake so far. I've also tried their delicious pear tart. The crust is delicate and buttery and oh so good!

On a recent visit to Cannelle, I happened to see a sheet cake that had been prepared for a special order. From where I was seated, the cake looked as if it had been decorated with plastic flowers. As I approached the display case and took a closer look, I realized that the flowers were not plastic at all, but rather intricately piped edible flowers. The flowers were beautiful and looked so real...a true work of art.

With respect to pricing, it seems that on average, the small cakes run about $16 and the large ones go for about $20. The tart was $14, but definitely too small for a large gathering. I would feel very confident about purchasing any of the cakes from Cannelle and serving them to my guests. Quality and pricing are not an issue at all.

Has anyone tried the soups and sandwiches at Espresso 77?

Edited: I just read cupcakeparade's comments on my question. Anyone else have comments to share?

Bistro-type food in Jackson Heights or vicinity?

I would love to see this type of restaurant in Jackson Heights also. It would be a first in the neighborhood. And you're right...this has been posted before by the interested party. Not sure what happened though.

New French Patisserie in Jackson Heights

They had brioche a few days ago...that was prior to New Year's Eve when I happened to notice it. If you're going to trek on over there just for the brioche, I would call to ask before going. Like someone else posted, there primary business seems to be large scale, so smaller items may be harder had, particularly on weekdays I would assume. Their website should have the phone number.

New French Patisserie in Jackson Heights

I stopped by earlier today, and was lucky enough to get a chocolate croissant from the batch that had recently been removed from the oven. It was buttery, flakey and the chocolate was warm and deliciously rich tasting.

We purchased the large pineapple coconut macaroon cake for our New Year's Eve gathering. All our guests raved about it and commented on how delicious the fresh pineapple filling was. I have yet to be disappointed with any of their pastries.

New French Patisserie in Jackson Heights

When we stopped by in the AM, the music that was playing in the background was lite spanish/folkloric acoustic guitar...no pop at all, and just loud enough to be heard but not overbearing. Maybe the time of day will dictate the music that is played. Also, every seat in the place was occupied, even the stools by the window and there was plenty of takeout going on as well. With respect to the ambiance, I don't think this is the type of place to go sit with your favorite book. I think because of its size, it may get too loud in there completely eliminating any coziness factor. This is a place to go for coffee/tea, a pastry, read your morning paper perhaps, and then go on your way. Also, I think it's too soon to draw conclusions on decor. The place just opened on Friday and therefore, that leaves a lot of time left for upgrades on look.
