Best marinara sauce in a jar?

I second Michael's. Like Rao's it's on the thin side but fresh and flavorful and delicious.

Moving to Washington Hts - suggestions for provisions?

Hi folks, wondering if anyone has any great hints for things like good bakeries or produce, I already know about the Russian Markets (hooray) and about Frank's Gourmet and about the Farmers' Mkt in Inwood. I'm at the top end of Washington Hts, near the Cloisters, so anything in Washington Hts or Inwood would be of interest. TIA!

Soy or other ground beef substitute?

Not quite as meaty in texture as crumbles but still good - bulghur wheat. It adds texture and doesn't add any off flavors.

Camping time!

First thing I thought of is black bean salad - black beans, red onion, peppers of your choice, some japaleno, corn, cilantro, cumin, a drizzle of olive oil and a whole bunch of lime. Eat with a spoon or wrap in tortilla. Avocados are a good addition but get squishy if added, better added at the last minute. Have fun!

Slow Cooker Chipotle Chicken Chili

Question: I made the mistake of purchasing a really big slow cooker (8 cup) - would I need to double this recipe? Please advise, I would like to cook this recipe today!

Do you have a go-to vegan cookbook for "everyday" cooking?

Yes, these are very good blogs - and Veganomican is one of the cookbooks written by the post punk kitchen girls. Very fun and useful book.

How much fennel pollen is too much? Saveur's roasted chicken recipe

Thanks guys. The recipe calls for tablespoons, not teaspoons. I had a feeling 3T was way too much. I'll trust my instincts and wing it with much less.

How much fennel pollen is too much? Saveur's roasted chicken recipe

After almost a year out of commission, my oven is finally working (fingers crossed) - I'd like to roast a chicken using the fennel pollen I bought JUST before my oven died last year. Most of the things I have read have cautioned to use it sparingly - however, the Saveur recipe I am looking for calls for 3T mixed with evoo to be used as a rub under and on the skin. Does that sound like way too much? Please advise!!

Adding flavor to turkey gravy

Yes, I agree with this. WHen I have done gravy in advance it was lacking something until I dumped it into the roasting pan and incorporated the drippings - huge difference!

Real Sichuan food in Bay Ridge

I was there last weekend - chengdu dumplings - delicious, juicy interior, firm wrappers, delicious sauce. Chicken with spicy capsicum - at first glance we thought they had dumbed down the sichuan peppercorns but we were mistaken - perfect level of tongue tingle. Dan dan noodles were quite nice as was the cucumber with fresh garlic. All in all a delicious meal. This place has certainly NOT gone down hill.

What are your favorite sources for vegan recipes?

Anything having to do with Isa Chandra Moskowitz - theppk.com blog, or her books, I have Veganomicon which I love and just got Vegan Brunch. Her recipes are well tested and tasty, and her humor makes it all fun. She is very creative.

Sriracha on Pizza: Brilliant or Abominable?

I've been putting sriracha on pizza for over 20 years. It's really good. Who cares where it was made? Other hot sauces are good too, but I think sriracha is best for this because of the garlic content.

Tasty Vegan Or Vegan Friendly Restaurant in Brooklyn, NY

V-Spot - vegan, some things are really good and some not so good - their wraps are good (I love the jerk "chicken" wrap), salads, I've heard the burger is really good - but I have not liked some of their main dishes so much. S'Nice- good place for veg or vegan wraps and salads. Everything I have had there has been very tasty and fresh. These are both casual places.

I need to order a half sheet cake in Manhattan - need suggestions!

We used to use Jason's Patisserie years ago but they are SO expensive. Does anyone have a good source for sheet cakes for delivery? This is for a wedding shower for someone at the office and she deserves something good. Please advise. TIA!!

Reheating a cream-based pasta dish/sauce

I was once told by a waiter that the best way to heat up these kinds of dishes is by adding a little milk, in a pan on the stove, gentle heat. It always worked for me.

Suggestions sought for vegan in Niagara Falls (Ontario)

Thanks Peaches to Poutine, at the very least this confirms that one of my choices is pretty safe vegan-wise. St Catherine - I'm getting the idea that this area is more vegan friendly, perhaps we should really buckle down and rent that car so it's more easily accessible.

And your blog - what truly gorgeous cupcakes and intriguing flavors - wasabi peanut? Yes please.

Suggestions sought for vegan in Niagara Falls (Ontario)

Going to Niagara Falls (Ontario side) in June to celebrate my 10th anniversary with my vegan husband. Normally I would get a hotel room with a small fridge so we could keep various staples (cereal and soy milk for instance) in the room. Niagara is looking very bad for vegans from my research. I'm looking for restaurant recommendations, but also suggestions - what can I keep in the room that does not need refrigeration, I'm thinking peanut butter, crackers, fruit....any brilliant ideas? We may rent a car for a day or two, but for the most part, we are on foot. I appreciate any advise you can give me!
