For vegans missing cheese...

Yeah, Daiya is delicious. There is a place by me that makes a fantastic vegan meatball parm with lots of gooey daiya - I'm not even a vegetarian - and I can eat the hell out of that thing.

Best Vegetarian products:

Thanks GHG I'll see if the crown heights stop and shop really carries it - odd that the only other places that claim to carry Gardein now are very hard core bkln neighborhoods where I don't much expect there are many vegans! jes7o - where is your SuperTarget?

Best Vegetarian products:

Yes, the Field Roast sausages are really good. I use the italian and the apple sage a lot - good for crumbling into dishes (ie pasta with lots of garlic and broccoli rabe, yum). I love the Gardein cutlets but lately I can't find Gardein products in my area anymore (Gowanus in Brooklyn) - if anyone knows where I can get them, please let me know!

Dim sum/chinese in Flushing

Haven't been for a couple of years but I like Perfect Team Corporation (I know, the name is ridiculous).

You have to read "P is for Peas" in her Alphabet for Gourmets. The beauty of simplicity.

M. F. K. Fisher & Other Foodie Writers From Why Back When

cstout, they are not at all hard to find (at least they weren't a few years ago). She's a wonderful writer! There's tons of stuff available on Amazon, I just checked. Enjoy!!

Portable Work Lunch Ideas

You're very sweet to pack his lunch though, maybe you are the saint here. He sounds a bit picky! I'm just saying. Give yourself some credit. :)

Tasty healthy cold cereal?

I don't really like sweet cereal, so I love the Kashi puffs (not the sweetened ones) - nice flavor and texture. Otherwise I'm a cheerios girl.

One block from Mission Dolores and the Rock shop is the Canal Bar - a friendly neighborhood joint with a back yard - Third Ave between Union and President - if you're in the neighborhood! Gort is right, some of those irish bars do have a forbidding vibe - I'm also of irish descent, but my husband and I got frozen out of one of those places. Still, they are always worth a try, you might find a gem.

Be sure to tip the counter guy a buck - he'll make a huge sandwich even more massive for you. You will not be able to get your jaws around it.

Almost calorie-free savory snacks? Quitting smoking.

If you do the cream cheese thing, be sure to use neufchatel instead of regular cream cheese, lower fat and hard to tell the difference. Also, I like raw vegs, esp cucumber or carrots, dipped in hot sauce (Cholula is especially good for this). If you are seriously craving fat, have some good fat like avocado or nuts. Almonds are great for healthy snacking. Someone mentioned the fat free greek yogurt - fage is SO good, so thick and creamy you really feel like you are eating something sinful. Good luck!!

I always ruin dried chickpeas - any tips?

Chickpeas are the ONLY dried bean (aside from lentils) that I have always had complete success with, so I'm surprised that you have had trouble. I soak over night, and simmer in fresh water, and they always come out nice and tender, just as tender as canned. I'm guessing that the chickpeas that you are buying are really old and dried out.

tuna noodle casserole craving...by a vegetarian

Maybe next time try with little chunks of tofu that have been drained and browned a bit - for a bit of a chew and some protein. I'd like to know how you made it with the mashed chickpeas though!

Out of town friend NEEDS old school cold sesame noodles!

I'm talking about the kind that used to be available in every generic chinese place, thick and peanutbuttery tasting. This is the one thing she craves most when she comes to town and I just don't know where to find it anymore. Most places that have it now serve a thinner sauce. Can anyone help me? Doesn't even have to be great, just has to be what she remembers. Please help! This poor girl lives in the midwest now, and is not able to get many things. We try to find everything she wants on her once yearly visit. Please help! She's coming this weekend.

vegetarian choices at Le Boucon?

Thanks! I'll probably do this. Le Bouchon was recommended to me by a co-worker, that's the only reason I singled it out.

vegetarian choices at Le Boucon?

I'm hoping to have lunch at Le Bouchon in Cold Spring on Sunday...my husband is a vegetarian, I'm wondering if there are any decent vegetarian options for him? Please advise. Thnx!

Bayridge: best places to buy Italian & Swedish provisions: bakeries, salumeria, delis?

Not in Bay Ridge, but in Bensonhurst:

An italian woman I work with was just raving about it yesterday, fantastic selections, inexpensive. I can't wait to check it out myself. I know you asked about Bay Ridge but....

Harissa - should it be so bitter?

Thanks everyone for your input. I'll seek out Harissa in jars next time, or possibly try making it myself.

Harissa - should it be so bitter?

Thanks CoconutMilk, that's exactly how I feel, like I'm supposed to like it. No matter, I used it anyway and it did not spoil the dish I was making, which was a winter root vegetable tagine. Next time I feel like trying harissa again I'll see if I like the jarred stuff more, you may be right about the canning process causing the bitterness.

Lan Sheng – First Rate Szechuan in Midtown

Glad to hear it Bob. I'll give them another go then.

Crispy Breaded Pork Tenderloin Sandwiches

:)

What discontinued products do you miss?

Regal crown hard candies...came in a roll, the cherry and the lemon were sooo good, nice and sour.

Harissa - should it be so bitter?

I just picked up some harissa, it's a tunisian brand and comes in a can...it's hot and very bitter. Should it be so bitter? The bitterness kind of obscures any other flavor. Should I try another brand or is this just what harissa is like? Please advise!

Would you go to a restaurant that doesn't serve beer, wine or any alcohol

I'm a drinker but I would absolutely go to a place that didn't serve alcohol.

Start with A Block of Tofu and.....?

I do something very similar to this, and it's delicious. I add a dash of rice vinegar to the marinade though and sometimes cilantro. The marinade is also great on grilled egglant or any kind of green veg. Serve with rice, brown or white. I add a dash of rice vinegar to the marinade though and sometimes cilantro.

How many people really use shallots? I generally don't.

I use them but not often. I think they're lovely, but I only buy them when they are called for in a recipe or I'm making something special.

Best vegetarian potluck picnic dish?

Black bean salad. I generally use minced red onion, corn, cilantro, diced sweet red peppers, minced jalapeno, lots of lime juice, cumin to taste, sometimes a little oil, sometimes i leave it out, maybe some paprika or better yet smoked paprika, sometimes I throw in diced avocado....flexible, but really tasty and great for hot weather. Serve cold, with or without warm flour tortillas.

What Is Your Defining Dish?

I'll take Chinese dumplings or bao over fois gras any day of the week.

What non-obvious things do you store in your fridge?

Anything whole grain...whole wheat flour, brown rice...they can go rancid if not stored in the fridge.
