Low Carbing when you have Crazy Busy week

In addition to all your nice greens, go to the deli and get them to cube some of your favorite low carb things like roast turkey, ham, etc. Ditto some aged cheeses - manchego, goat cheese gryere, gouda, etc. You then have either snacks, or things you can throw into a salad. Mix and match with different greens, deli meats, etc.

When you do have a few minutes, you can throw some onions and wine in with a brisket, wrap it in foil and ignore it in the oven for 3 hours. Slice it and put in portions in tupperware with the gravy and onions. Have one for dinner and put the rest in the freezer. You should get 3 or 4 meals for you and hubby for one time effort.

Also think chops - veal, lamb, pork, etc. You can broil these up in no time and make a few extras to - you guessed it, chop up and add to salad greens for lunch the next day.

If you have not already done so, check ou tthe recipes on the Atkins web site. They have some winners there. We are all fond of the crustless broccoli quiche. A few minutes effort gives you 6 breakfasts or lunches, or add salad and you have a few light dinners for you and hubby.

Fun Chow: Lunch at Bob's 66 in Rockville

So is this Bob's 66 in the strip store location, or the old Shabu Shabu/pizza place location? If the former, then what is the Chinese restaurant in the latter location?

Chinese food to English translation

I seem to remember a few years ago someone talking about a book that had Chinese food terms in both Chinese and English - sort of a dictionary of dim sum and popular food terms. We will be going to Hong Kong soon so something like this would come in handy. Anyone remember the name of the book?

Almond Milk for Passover?

We have just started using Almond milk instead of skim milk. Most of the brands have a heksher with dairy designation although a few brands we have found at Trader Joes and Shoppers Food Warehouse do not have the dairy designation. So here's the question. Does almond milk need to be certified Kosher for Passover? If so, where can I get some (Washington, DC area)? If not, can I use the brand not certified as dairy for coffee after a meat meal? Thanks for your help and hag sameach.

seder main course?

I often make a stuffed veal breast for the second night of the seder. Instead of the standard farfel stuffing, I stuff with ground veal seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic, and fresh chopped herbs. Then I add some whole hard boiled eggs to the stuffing. When you slice the meat you have the breast meat, stuffing with a slice of egg. It is really very pretty on a platter and really tasty.

Gluten free challah in Brooklyn.

There is a web site called glutenfreepalace.com. They have gluten free challah, hamantashen, bagels, and other yummies. They note those that are kosher on the web site. Most of the breads and hamentashen I have tried are kosher.

Rosh Hashanna Side Dish

So I have a few vegtarians coming for erev yontiff dinner. I would like to prepare a dish that is substantial enough to serve as the vegetarian main course and side dish for everyone else. Would like to have something with protein as one of my vegetarian guests is diabetic. I have made shakshuka or quinoa (which works better for a side dish).in the past, but would like to try something new. Any suggestions?

Reservations needed for Cafe Chloe

Thought we would have a late dinner (8:30) after meeting. There will be four of us next Wednesday night. I understand that they do not take reservations. Do you think we will be seated right away, or are they very crowded on a Wednesday night?

Where to take my big brother to dinner?

So we went to Zaytinas. Food and service were both great, but is there some rule against smiling? I have never seen a more dour staff.

High Protein Food in Encinitas

So coming to town for a conference. We are meeting some friends in Encinitas for dinner the Saturday before the conference starts. We want to go somewhere yummy where we can talk and catch up, but, I am on Atkins. So can you recommend a good restaurant where I can get some good protein and nice green veggies without torturing my friends and my poor hubby who is sick to death of steak restaurants?
Many thanks!

Foodies in town for a few days, where to eat?

I love the Del. As a meeting planner, I have stayed over once or twice and had tours (with lots of stories about famous guests). I love the romance of the old part of the hotel, especially around Xmas time.

Gaslamp HIlton. My bad. We are travelling to a jillion meetings this summer (okay 5, plus 2 family visits) so I am getting a little confused. Any way, we do have a car, so can travel quite a bit.

comic con

Are you kidding? My hubby would love to go to Comic con! However, we will get to San Diego, right near the convention center for the (wait for it) Joint Statistical Meetings. So thanks for the question, maybe we can compare notes after our visiits.

Where to take my big brother to dinner?

Great suggestion! I picked Zaytina. I know he likes Greek food so the menu should be different enough to be unavailable in Louisville, but with enough familiar items not to be scary. Thanks again.

special anniversary dinner in or near Rockville, MD

Not terribly romantic for a kid free evening, and way too loud for intimate conversation. We did not find most of the food to be anything special, but we did love the desserts.

Where to take my big brother to dinner?

Big bro is coming to town from Louisville, KY. He is staying at the L'enfant Plaza hotel and wants to 1) stay pretty close to the hotel and 2) have something he can't get in Louisville, i.e. Chinese, Italian, Steak, chain restaurants. He likes good food but isn't a huge foodie (but we are!). Suggestions?

Beautifying rustic rhubarb

You would always make a beautiful fruit flower on top of the casserole with sliced strawberries and black berries in the middle. Alternatively an elegant dessert with rhubarb is a short bread cookie with rhubarb on top. It seems to be I got the recipe from this web site.

Foodies in town for a few days, where to eat?

Will be attending a large conference at the convention center with my husband at the end of July. We'll have a few business dinners, and dinner with another couple who also enjoy good food. We spouses will also have some free time for lunches and breakfasts. We love local cuisine, loath most chains, like seafood (but not sushi) don't mind spending money on really good food, but wouldn't pass up an exceptional greasy spoon either. We are staying at the Hilton near the convention center. Not sure if we will have a car yet. I haven't been in San Diego in 25 years, so I am open to anything. Suggestions?

Reporting back from Ottawa visit - Anniversary Dinner

We shared everything, and probably had about 6 dishes total. We were incredibly stuffed and incredibly pleased, so worth it all!

Report on Montreal portion of Ottawa/Montreal Trip

Hi Fellow Chows - thank you for the wonderful suggestions for both Ottawa and Montreal. Our Ottawa experiences are on the Ontario board. Here is what we did in Montreal. Turned out we had two oranized dinners, so only had time for two big meals. On Sunday we had a fabulous dinner at Pied de Cuchon. Appetizers were two mini sandwhiches in Chinese style steamed buns with thick sliced bacon, slaw and cheddar sauce. We practically licked the plate! Second app was a salad of arugula, fiddlehead ferns, smoked meat, sea snails and cheddar sauce. We really didn`t need our mains, but had the bison ribs (enormous bone with lots of meat and much too sweet barbecue sauce) and the lobster roll (okay but the bread was cold and it was under seasoned) loaded with fresh claw and tail meat. Service was great, informative and attentive.

Last night we discoverd Là Aberge Saint Gabriel in the old port area. First it was handicap accessible which is terribly hard to find in Montreal. Dinner started with 2 amuse bouche - chorizo baked into crisp bread, and a cold corn soup with tomato salsa and crouton. For an appetizer we had charcuterie. Chef`s choice included pate, rillete, chorizo, rabbit, mixed fruit chutney as well as an excellent lentil salad and potatoe salad. Did I mention the bread? A nice chewy french, rosemary and olive, and a nice rustic farm loaf. Mains were interesting takes on tangine (braised lamb shoulder with an au jus reduction with apricots and bulgar) and paella (a bead of safron rice with chunks of lobster, a huge scallop, rabbit, chorizo, mussels and chicken beautifully composed). We were too full for dessert, but the check came with house made chocolate crisps and a nicely wrapped brownie take with us. Service was outstanding.

We checked out both bagel places and found them interesting. In future, do warn visitors from the USA that you must take your bagels with you and not expect to sit with coffee and a long menu of bagel sandwiches.

Again it was all wonderful. Thank you for the suggestions!

ice cider - urgent

Friends are driving home from Montreal to New England and would like to get some ice cider on their way to New Hampshire on the way to Vermont. Any suggestions for where they can get some ice cider? We are heading home on on RT 101 to Syracuse and then home to Washington. We wouldn`t mind getting some ice cider to try too. Many thanks!

Reporting back from Ottawa visit - Anniversary Dinner

Thank you all for your excellent recommendations. We have never had so many types of tapas in just a few days. Based on your suggestions we spent our anniversary at Play. While it was wildly expensive, it was also outstanding. The service was exceptional. Whiie not quite accessible, we were able to carry my scooter in from a side door and park it for the evening. The wait staff worked with the kitchen to make sure that nothing that we ordered would be a problem with my food allergies. The most memorable dishes included a grilled octopus salad, rabbit terrine, and gorgeous grilled scallops

We had dinner another night at Sidedoor Kitchen. They are not accessible at all, but, I was able to park my scooter at the top of the stairs, and hubby and staff helped me down to our table. While the noise level was not really suitable for an intiimate dinner, the staff heard well enough to find out which dishes I could have with my allergies, and to make some good suggestions. We had a completely different grilled asparagus salad, and super duck breast. The chef's selection of donuts for dessert was worth the calories and carbs, and the extra week of dieting I will have to suffer through to make up for them.

The only sour note was at Scone Witch. The hotel called ahead and spoke to Alex to see if there was an accessible entrance. There wasn't. The concierge requested that they reserve a table for me as it would be difficult for me to stand for a long period of time. He refused. When I asked it if would be okay to leave my scooter on the street by the entrance Alex replied that he was not familiar with the city code. (What?) Even though you had to go one place for your scones, and another place for your tea, everything was yummy. But having to pay separately for your butter and jam - just mean. Like Alex.

Cake Emergency in Lakeland!

Our small family (7) will be assembling a week from tomorrow to celebrate my Dad's 80th birthday. We are going to a restaurant called Louie Mack's. I called to make reservations and ask about a cake. They want $85 for a 7 layer chocolate cake. Given that we are flying in Friday night from Washington, D.C. and my brother is driving in that day from Kentucky, we are sort of over a barrel unless some can recommend a really great bakery that is either near the convention center (where brother is staying) or near Lakeland Park Drive where we are staying. Any suggestions?
