Stay away from Sakana-Ya @ J-Town !! Unfresh Sashimi
Hello, where is Taro? Do they sell sashimi ends like at J-Town? Thanks.

Came back and this is what we had:
Day 1: got into town late afternoon and headed to Cochon for dinner. We split the mac and cheese, wood fired oysters and cochon signature dish. The mac and cheese was very creamy and peppery. The cochon was a little dry and too peppery. The oysters were good but there were only five. Overall a tad pricey for what you get.
Day 2: Had breakfast at Cafe Beignet. We had the Southern breakfast and French Toast. Nothing remarkable here. Not a big portion as I was expecting. Lunch was at the New Orleans school of cooking and it was amazing. They showed us shrimp creole and crab corn bisque that day. Great chef, good food-and more than enough for lunch. I'm also addicted to Abita root beer now. Dinner was at Bubba Gump (yeah, yeah I knew what I was getting into, we don't have any here) and I really enjoyed it. We had two of the favourite dishes: scampi and mahi mahi. Both were filling and had great tasting seafood.
Day 3: Breakfast was at Johnny's Po-Boys and we had the breakfast and an oyster po-boy. The grits tasted better here than at Cafe Beignet. The po-boy was delicious. Tons of fried oysters in a soft bun with good sourness from the pickles. Lunch was at Emeril's. Service and food were both excellent. My favourite was the oyster appetizer with crab coleslaw. They were so crispy on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth creamy on the inside. Dinner was at Napoleon house where we had the jambalaya and gumbo. Food was just ok, but it was cheap.
Day 4: Brunch at Eat, had the big breakfast and fruit and grain. This would be our fav breakfast of the trip. Great service, nice decor, clean flavours. Breakfast was really filling so we skipped lunch and had dinner at Felix's. Tried turtle soup and fried alligator, the latter was really good. We also had the trio platter of jambalaya, red beans and rice, and etouffee.
Unfortunately we weren't able to make it to the Parkway/Mandina's area, and we got to Central Grocery too late. We also tried beignets from Cafe du Monde and Cafe Beignet. We preferred the beignets from the latter, which seemed fluffier and the leftovers didn't harden.
In summary, great place to eat food! Exciting rambling will end now.

Thanks guys!
I now have enough restaurants to plan a second trip lol.
I'll be going in 2 days and I can't wait to eat all the delicious food!

Would I have any trouble getting into the above restaurants wearing shorts and a tshirt?

Thanks for the detailed reply. The BBQ shrimp looks good, I'll have to try it out.
I went to the Commander's Palace website; I could get two appetizers for under $20, but nothing with an entree ($17-$20 themselves). Am I missing the combo deals?

Lunch:
New Orleans School of Cooking
Emeril's

I'm trying to go for authentic dishes, and not too high end.

Thanks everyone for their help! I have to admit that I was heavily influenced by the New Orleans Visitors Guide 2009 when I made those selections.
I forgot to mention that I'll be staying at the Marriott in the French Quarter. I'll be there on September 16. Is that still too early for oysters?

I don't want to do highjack other threads, so I've created my own. I'm also going to be a first-time visitor to New Orleans in late September for 3 days/4 nights. I'm thinking about the following restaurants:
Breakfast:
Cafe du Monde
Cafe Beignet
Cafe Fleur de Lis
Lunch:
Emeril's - 3 Courses in 30 Minutes For $19.50
New Orleans School of Cooking
Cochon Restaurant
Dinner:
Copeland's Cheesecake Bistro
Acme Oyster House
Bubba Gump Shrimp
Are any of these restaurants better for lunch than dinner, or vice versa? Which one should I get a Po-Boy from? Seafood Gumbo? Muffuletta?
Thanks!
Ribfest 2009 season - anyone been?
Two votes for Bad Wolfe. I think I'll try them out. How much was the 1/3 rack? Do they sell half racks?
Ribfest 2009 season - anyone been?
I was just going to ask the same thing. I'll be going to the Scarborough Ribfest on Saturday. Which vendor should I get my ribs from:
Bad Wolfe BBQ
Bibb's Barbeque
Blazin' BBO
Camp 31
Crabby's Barbeque
Gator BBQ
Hawgs Gone Wild
Jack the Ribber
Tennessee Fatbacks
Thirsty Cactus
Kenzo is now downtown. (Ramen.)
Just went and had the King of Kings. Lots of ingredients, and the meat wasn't very fatty.
Service was a little slow, but there were only two servers and the place was filled for dinner. They might want to hire a third for that time. I recommend getting a seat at the back near the kitchen, so that the servers have to pass by you frequently.
Toronto Night Market ---> Night It Up! night market??
I'll be going to try the stinky tofu and takoyaki. Does anyone know what are the prices like?
Scarborough Gems
Googs - was this experiment held at Curry & Roti or at Blue Water Curry? Which one increases happiness levels the most?
ethnically diverse street food comes to Toronto
Having just gone to Luminato's 1000 Tastes of Toronto with live cooking and a variety of cuisines, I was wondering how they got exempt from the strict rules these carts are faced with. The festival down at Queen's Quay seemed like street food to me.
Luminato - PC '1000 Tastes of Toronto'
There was a huge line for Mis Amigos' BBQ chicken, steak and fried plantains. It was worth it though as the chicken was really good. Senses had a dessert box with four items.
New Poutine Chain above Burrito Boys
I think some people from this forum should open up a shop and make some "proper" poutine for the rest of us :)
ethnically diverse street food comes to Toronto
Anyone try the new Indian and Greek food carts in front of City Hall?
Korean Food?
I was wondering the same thing last week. There are a few good threads already in progress if you search for them. Are you looking downtown (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/581151) or uptown (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/531656)?
Hand Pulled Noodles
I only know of Sun's Kitchen in Pacific Mall: http://www.sunskitchen.com/about.html. The noodle texture is good and chewy and the broth was alright. The pieces of meat that I got with mine were very fatty though.
Corner House Restaurant - Winterlicious
I went here a couple years ago for Summerlicious. The line stretched across the street and we were seated well beyond our "reservation" time. However, the food was delicious and filling. Looks likes the portion size has gone downhill.
looking for spumoni ice cream
I've only had spumoni ice cream at the Spaghetti Factory and it was very tasty. I've never had it before and it was a pleasant surprise. The pasta wasn't bad either.
New Poutine Chain above Burrito Boys
I tried the Traditional and the Prime Gr Beef. I'll go back for the Traditional whenever I have a poutine craving. I've never had cheese curds like this before, and I definitely like it. I went on Friday night around 7:30 pm and there was no line up at all. Poutine was served fast too.
New Poutine Chain above Burrito Boys
Darn, I was hoping to try out this place this Thursday.
New Poutine Chain above Burrito Boys
I'll try it! Makes a good side to my burrito :)
Sushi Bong (Yonge/Finch) - Review + Photos
I just ate there and the prices and portions are better than average IMO. Our plates were made fast too. The lack of seating is an issue though, and take-out may be my preferred choice.
The King of Dumplings: Dumpling King – Yonge & Finch location (lengthy review + pics)
Great review! Although I didn't go to Dumpling King yet (tried Sushi Bong instead first) I did get that fish ice cream from the convenience store across the street. The old guy working there was very friendly!
C'Bon is C'Khrap (chinese delivery Yonge & Eglinton)
Wow it looks like this place went downhill. I've only tried it once a couple years ago. I got some rice combo with chicken balls I think, and a deep fried Mars bar. The food was generic Chinese take out quality. However, the Mars bar was nice and gooey.
ATTENTION RAMEN LOVERS!
Just had the ramen at Tokyo Grill. The ramen has a good consistency and the broth is not salty. The portion size is also very good for the price. It just came with beef however. It would have been nicer if it had an egg or seaweed.
