Budapest on budget, please recommend

Going to Budapest for 5 days, want to hit every restaurant/market/cafeteria, anything that's delicious, unique, representative of Hungarian cuisine, and cheap. The cool places for locals!

I'm definitely looking for things like the best hurka, lecso, langos, halaszle, vadas, meggyleves, any fozelek...

Please recommend, location doesn't matter but my apartment is on boszormenyi ut.

Thanks.

Please advise, Saturday dinner for 3, similar to Bondir?

Mother and Aunt visiting, looking for Saturday night dinner, 3-4 courses each (unless there are affordable chef's/tasting menus). Went to Bondir in Cambridge last time, and it was the best dinner I've had in Boston since everything was spectacularly designed/prepared and we could build a meal because all dishes are available as half portions (still big) for $15. I'm not looking for very fancy or very expensive, so L'espalier, Craigie, and places like that are out of question. A more spacious gastropub would also be good.

Any suggestions help!

Thanks

Mid-Priced unique spots in Boston + Cambridge + Allston??

Looking for 3-4 restaurants for lunch and dinner for the weekend.

Game, fatty meats, anything unique would be appreciated. Maybe some gastropubs?

I'm only familiar with Boston's fine dining, some favorites being Bondir and L'espalier, but I'm now looking for more affordable options, but still high in quality and imagination.

Extensive beer menus are also appreciated, but not a necessity as food is the priority!

Thanks.

Great Fine Dining Lunch in Boston? (Monday)

thanks for the recs. Is this pretty much the only option...?

Great Fine Dining Lunch in Boston? (Monday)

Hi All,

I'm wondering if there are any great lunch spots in Boston or Cambridge on a Monday. My mother will be visiting town this Sunday-Monday and we'll be going to Toro for Sunday brunch, Bondir for Sunday dinner, but need one more place for Monday lunch.

We would love a lunch tasting menu - but all superb lunch recommendations (no brunch items) that are open on Monday would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all!

Cheap Lunch in Cambridge near Kendall Square?

Thanks for the answers so far. Yeah, I specifically meant a large lunch, otherwise I'm hungry all day. I moved from NYC in southern midtown, and everything there was incredible value not only in terms of portion, but also in terms of quality. It is very sad to see that Boston and this area of Cambridge is so expensive for overall incredibly subpar lunch.

Cheap Lunch in Cambridge near Kendall Square?

Hey Everyone!

New employee working in the Kendall Square area by Cambridge Center. I've read a few threads on this, but I was wondering if anyone had new insight, new opinions, new recommendations etc.

I'm looking for 2 categories.

Under 8 dollar lunch AND under 16 dollar lunch (when I'm splurging)... yeah I'm an intern!

Please no Chinese food, but all other cuisines are good to go! No salads or small sandwich rip-offs, I eat A LOT.

Thanks!

BIG portions on small budgets in Gramercy / Kips Bay / East Flatiron for Lunch?

Like the title says, I'm looking for big lunch portions for $10 or under at lunch hours. No chinese food please, but everything else is highly appreciated!

Thanks

Inexpensive, fun, casual date. PLEASE suggest.

I'm taking my friend out tomorrow (Thursday) night around 6PM. I'm looking downtown (lower east side, soho, tribeca, and everything lower).

I'm looking for good, but inexpensive food in a fun place for young people. Cheap drinks would be GREAT. My budget for 2 main courses as many drinks as possible would be about $80-90. All cuisines are fine, preferable not italian though. All asian good too. Something fun and exciting would be nice, I know the budget is rough.

Thanks so much.

Fine Dining in Boston?

Thanks guys, distance really isn't a killer, so if it isn't close by, we'll live. Just would like to see something special in Boston fine dining. Personal favorites would be appreciated too!

Fine Dining in Boston?

Hey Everyone,

My mother and I are big foodies from New York City. We're looking for a restaurant to have dinner on Sunday the 5th in Boston. We will be staying in the Sheraton over by Prudential. Budget isn't an issue. We'd probably do 3 courses each unless there is a dinner menu or tasting menu (a tasting menu would be great). Preferably 15 minute walk at most from Pru, otherwise we'll take a cab or the T.

This is a celebratory dinner.
No Asian or Italian for this dinner.

Thank you all so much.

Wallse (West Village) Review

As the menu changes really frequently, they did not have either the lobster or the venison, and venison being my favorite meal, I'd love to go there later in the year when it is in season again to try it. Nothing was bland or underseasoned this time around though, but you are right, the fois terrine is a disappointment.

Fun Dinner for 4 couples in September, Soho, West Village, Meatpacking ares...

I just wrote a review about Wallse in the West Village. All entree's around around 30 dollars and prepared absolutely perfectly. I'd recommend everyone get a different desert afterwards and share as well, $10-$12 each. The dishes are all very special but not necessarily too experimental, so daring and not daring should both be okay. Here's the review too:

Craft is also great, as is Recette if you guys want to share a bunch of different things.

Wallse (West Village) Review

First Chowhound Review-here we go.

Wallse is an Austrian (I'd say Austrian-inspired) restaurant in the West Village. It's fairly small, unpretentious, even though huge painting of the chef might bother some. The staff was fantastic, paid very close attention while keeping it fairly casual; altogether very pleasant.

We both opted for the 6-course (choose your own dishes) tasting for $98. Our waitress warned us about the 6-course tasting being a lot of food (there is also a 4-course option), but we wanted to try more things.

First Course: Cold Melon Soup with Lobster. While a tiny bit on the sweet side, the soup was refreshing, the lobster was fresh and flavorful, and the dish was way larger than a tasting portion (this is a trend you will recognize). 8/10

Second Course: I had the Potato Ravioli and my dining partner had the Fois Gras. These were the only tasting size portions of the meal, and both wonderful. I'd say the Fois Gras was the lowest point of the meal, while perfectly prepared and presented, just nothing too special. 6.5/10

Third Course: We had the Halibut with Cucumber + Dill sauce and Chanterelles. The fish was fresh and prepared correctly, and went perfectly with the bright green sauce that symbolizes the chef's "I'll do what I want" attitude. The sauce was as green as paint and very strong in flavor. It seems intimidating at first, but this chef knows what he's doing. Also, I should mention that at any other fine dining spot, this would be an a la carte portion.9/10

Fourth Course: Olive poached Wild Striped Bass, topped with a (light) sweet pepper sauce, over a bed of mashed potatos. This was probably my favorite course of the night. The bass was prepared perfectly, the sweet peppers were a delicious complement, and the mash was nice to see in a restuarant like this. Also, I should mention again, not a tasting portion. 10/10

Fifth Course: Duck breast with onion-apricot chutney and black rice. This was, thankfully, not as large as the other portions (because we didn't eat the rice), but being duck breast, it was fairly heavy. The duck was prepared perfectly and the onion-apricot chutney was light but bold in flavor. The rice, while tasty, did not go well with the dish at all and seemed out of place. No complaints, because I couldn't have finished it anyway! 8.5/10

Sixth Course: I ate the Apricot strudel and my dining partner the Salzburger Nockerl. I'm usually not big on deserts, but I figured I'd go for a desert even before entering the restaurant, knowing that their cheese plate was a bit uninspired. During dinner, I saw 3 other deserts at nearby tables, and I knew I couldn't miss out. I'll make myself clear, if I had the 6-course menu again, I'd finish with at least two deserts. 10/10 (Also, the deserts were the same size as the al a carte versions.)

So, in conclusion... I loved Wallse and it was the happiest dining experience I've had in a while. The tasting portions were about 3/5 the size of their al a carte portions. The food was all fantastic, I would definitely eat through the entire fish menu in one tasting if I had the craving. While the Fois was somewhat uninspired, and the black rice didn't match the duck, I probably wouldn't have mentioned it had the other dishes not been so perfect. The deserts are all unique and creative, while sticking to Austrian roots more so than the rest of the menu.

The 6-course is great to try many things on the menu, but make sure you are hungry enough for it. Wallse is my new standard for best value fine dining in the city. It doesn't try to be too experimental or flashy or complex in its dishes, and I think that is to its advantage here. Next time, I'd probably go with the 4-course with the heavier dishes. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who hasn't been (or hasn't been in a while) because this one, won't disappoint.

Cheese Steak besides Carl's in Murray Hill/Gramercy/Kips Bay/Flatiron?

Anything outstanding besides Carl's? Murray Hill Deli on 34th and Lex does really good Cheese steaks, but I haven't had another good one besides Carl's in the neighborhood. (They also make the best sandwiches in the neighborhood, HUGE and really FRESH, and way cheaper than 2nd ave deli).

Is there anything else for cheese steaks though?

Thanks.

Fire Island for 1 week (Sat-Fri), All recs appreciated!!

Hello All,

I'm going to Fire Island tomorrow for 1 week. I've been there once (2 years ago), but couldn't find anything decent to eat.

We will be in Cherry Grove area, but seeing as distances aren't too bad there (I believe), we're willing to walk to wherever to eat good food.

What are the best cheap/daytime food spots? This is fun/quick/value based lunch.
What are the best higher end dinner spots? Doesn't have to be fancy as long as the food is incredible. This is for dinners.

The internet is useless for Fire Island restaurants so I'm counting on everyone here!

Thanks so much!

Inexpensive dinner in Soho/Noho tonight

The restaurant doesn't need nice decor or fancy finish, just good food for a good price.

Party of 3, myself, girlfriend and friend, so it is a pretty casual dinner, just would like to have the best food for the price (I don't often eat around there).

We're looking to pay 30/person at most...

Thanks so much, I know this isn't an easy request :)

Most Duck for your Dollar? (Tasty too please!)

While I've been to most of the restaurants mentioned above, I haven't been to Lupa. The EMP duck is delicious if not a bit expensive, and Casa Mono is one of my favorite places for unplanned dinners. How are the other dishes at Lupa?

Most Duck for your Dollar? (Tasty too please!)

Would a roasted half duck include breast also?

Most Duck for your Dollar? (Tasty too please!)

Thanks this duck does look nice. The EMP duck is for two, thus two members of the party must share it, and unfortunately my girlfriend is vegetarian.

Other suggestions also still appreciated. Thanks.

Most Duck for your Dollar? (Tasty too please!)

Hi,

I am experiencing a terribly strong duck craving. Whenever I eat duck breast at restaurants, I always notice I pay a lot of money (which isn't the biggest issue) for very little duck, and end up hungry after my meal.

Where can I find the largest portion duck breast? A big hearty duck meal is all I need! (Probably with appetizer and dessert as well, but whose counting calories!)

Thanks!

Mexican Lunch Murray Hill / Kips Bay ??

Hello All,

I'm looking for a really good mexican lunch deal in Murray Hill or Kips Bay. Under $15 per person for this. No drinking today. Flavor and portion is priority, don't care what the place looks like as much.

I'm having lunch with coworkers in about 45 minutes. I work on 31st and Park.

Thanks so much!!!
Andras.

Recette -- Fantastic!

I went there a few months ago, and LOVED it. Took pictures to report and everything, but my phone broke. Going back today for round 2 (will take photos and post at some point).

I had a huge lunch today so I'll probably do one less dish, but last time was absolutely amazing. When you compose a meal of about 4 dishes at recette, you get an experience on par with some of the best tasting menus in the city, with altogether larger portions at a lesser price, in a friendlier environment. I highly recommend Recette!

Big Juicy Delicious Burger for Lunch TODAY (31st and Park) PLEASE HELP

Hey guys, thanks for all the help. We ended up going to Molly's because it is the best value for the buck burger. 12 dollars for a bacon cheese grilled onion burger thats marked at 10oz but probably closer to 12oz is SOLID. great fries also help. I'm going to try Benjamin's and MJ's in the near future. Rare looks great, but I heard its unreliable so I didn't want to end up being disappointed. Thanks.

Big Juicy Delicious Burger for Lunch TODAY (31st and Park) PLEASE HELP

I think its a burger day, and while I LOVE a lamb burger, that can't be an option for today. Primehouse for me actually was a bit of a miss. The meat quality was superb but the flavors were just a bit bland. Resto seems like a good option, might be a tad small.

Awaiting other suggestions! thanks again.

Dinner Tonight in Tribeca/Battery Park for 2, $80 total without drinks.

Hey everyone!

I need to quickly find a romantic place in Tribeca. We want to spend $80 (maximum) total on food, so thats probably in the $10-15 appetizer and $20-25 entree range. Romantic is a plus, not required. I'm a big foodie, the girlfriend isn't. She's vegetarian + fish. Haven't been down in Tribeca for serious food for about 2 years now, so I have no clue whats good lately down there.

THANKS!!!

2 Questions: Venison and Steak.

Hello All

Very simply two questions:

1. Where can I get a great Venison (steak, not stew) in Manhattan? Ever since Fleur de Sel closed, I haven't found any restaurant that has Venison, let alone a great Venison. Price is not an issue here, portion however is. I want the Venison dish to be filling, even it is part of a tasting menu.

2. Where can I get a good, big portion steak for under $30? I eat my steak rare to medium rare, and prefer a thicker piece of meat. It can be fatty, I don't mind. Flavor is key here; and yes I've been to Keen's but the pub room portions were tiny.

Thanks so much everyone.
