12 Hours in Boston!

It's also an international flight, which is an earlier lead time since those board earlier than domestic flights.

First Trip to SF since 2010. Best of what's new?

Thanks! I've read a lot about Jai Yun . . . may have to work that in this trip.

Japanese food in Boston (outside of a couple of very expensive sushi places) is completely mediocre, to the point that I'm not really sure I have much of a sense of the cuisine. I'll look into Kappa.

I'm definitely interested in the interesting as much as the innovative. Ler Ros totally blew my mind on the last trip. I couldn't believe the difference between that and the sweet glop I had thought was Thai food.

I'm from Boston, and while we have some excellent Chinese food, it's almost entirely either Sichuan or Taiwanese, so I don't haven't done much exploration outside these regional variations.

St.. Vincent looks awesome! That's definitely going on the list.

I feel sort of mixed about the new Bar Tartine. I was meh about the old incarnation, but my husband loved it and I think he'd feel really sad eating totally different food in the same space.

Thanks! We already have the Benu reservation, and I find the menu a little more intriguing than the Atelier Crenn reports, but I'd be interested in arguments to switch.

AQ & State Bird Provisions both look like good options to explore. Anything else along these lines?

First Trip to SF since 2010. Best of what's new?

Hi All,

My husband and I were lucky enough to enjoy wonderful vacations eating our way through SF in 2009 and 2010. We weren't able to make it back last year, but are looking forward to another trip out very soon. I'm hoping to enjoy a lot of novelty this trip. We've had some incredible food experiences on our last two trips, but most of them (other than maybe Commis and definitely Ler Ros) probably don't rate a return experience. I've been spending a lot of time trying to catch up on the boards, but I'm feeling overwhelmed by the options and hoping to get some help sifting through what's new and worthy.

We're looking for interesting, innovative and exciting food - mostly medium range type of places, with one blow out dinner. I'd also like to spend some time this trip exploring the range of Chinese food available in the Bay area, so any suggestions about how to hit some of the greatest hits would be most welcome.

As background, here's a mostly comprehensive list of where we've already been: Coi, Incanto, Commis, Slanted Door, Bar Tartine (old incarnation), Range, Ler Ros, a full exploration of the Ferry Building and a couple of tourist traps that some well meaning friends dragged us to.

Some places I'm thinking about: Benu (for the blow out dinner), Hakka Chinese, Mission Chinese Food, Commonwealth, and Plum. Thoughts on these?

All suggestions welcome! Thanks so much for your help.

Would it totally blow her mind to try the lobster roe noodles at Island Creek Oyster Bar?

Need some suggestions for Boston dining

They opened the patio Saturday night. I called Saturday afternoon to ask if it would be open since it was so nice out, and they said it was open, but they only were using about half of the tables since they're not fully up to summer staffing levels yet. I imagine they're playing it by ear based on the weather, and I'd call before assuming it's open for the next few weeks.

salsa Lizano

This has been discussed fairly recently:

Visiting Boston in July - Best Farm-to-Table?

Oleana. The Chef's husband is literally the farmer, and the stuff she does with produce in July & August (peak season) is out of this world. I don't know if it'll be peak tomato season quite yet when you're here, but if it is, definitely get whatever tomato mezze is on offer.

Need some suggestions for Boston dining

Junie, you should go to Strip T's, but for dinner, not lunch. Lunch has some good options, but Dinner is when the magic happens. You should drive to Watertown.

For lunch in Cambridge, there's Rod Dee, Crema Cafe, Hi-Rise, Flat Patties, All Star Sandwich Bar, and Sofra, to name a few.

Strip T's increasing funkiness

There are threads over on General Chowhounding that regularly go past 500 posts. I don't think we're in danger of that.

Strip-T's question

They take reservations. I'd do that.

Boston's best for cheap

We had a friend in town last summer with a similar eating background, and he thoroughly enjoyed R.F. O'Sullivan's burger (completely blew his mind) and Greek Corner.

Eater.com's 38 Essential Boston Restaurants

How has this list gotten this long without a Barking Crab mention?

February 2012 Openings and Closings

A new sushi restaurant has opened in the Park Square building. I believe it's called Samurai Express? Haven't been yet, but a co-worker described it as "better than supermarket quality." The menu looks like an ordinary lowest common denominator sushi restaurant, but it's basically the only non-sandwich/salad/soup lunch option in the immediate vicinity, so I expect it'll do well.

Porter square must-visits?

There've been some recent downhill alerts for Chez Henri. You might want to do a search for recent threads and decide if it's still worth going.

Must-eat and must-shop questions, with a home base of Coolidge Corner.

I think Russo's in Watertown is the local place for produce you're seeking. Better selection, and better prices than WF. A little out of the way, but worth it.

50th Birthday Dinner?

I believe Clio is currently closed for a freshening up renovation, so that might not work on your 2 week timeline.

Cheap Lunch in Cambridge near Kendall Square?

I do think some of the problem is that you said no chinese. A lot of the good, cheap lunch options in the neighborhood are chinese.

Inexpensive dinner very near Lyric Theatre

Zocalo? Right around the corner on Stanhope Street.

Strip T's increasing funkiness

Bob, I think we were there at the same time on Friday night.

This was our second visit, and we were just blown away by the food. We had a bunch of small plates - pretty much everything in yumyum's pictures plus the cauliflower, and the donut desert special, which sounds similar to the donuts described by others here. Still thinking about the cauliflower dish and the donut desert special almost a week later.

It was very clear that help had been brought into professionalize the service, and all of the little touches were there this time.

Also, since no one else has posted this, this place got a nice story on the Bon Appetit blog: http://www.bonappetit.com/blogsandforums/blogs/badaily/2011/12/tim-maslow.html

Yes, that's where the symbolism comes from.

I'm pretty sure it was Beverly.

November 2011 Openings and Closings

My husband is in that building fairly frequently and says there's been lots of activity of late, and what appeared to be a staff meeting over the weekend, so that sounds plausible.

ISO Low-End Boston Food with "personality"

Strip-T's would fit, but the interesting food is dinner only, I believe.

I'd head to the Allston neighborhood, which is teeming with excellent ethnic cheap eats. Two of my favorites are S&I Thai which is a little hole in the wall with 3 tables and mind-blowingly delicious thai food (if you like spicy, try the duck larb), and YoMa for burmese.

Alternately, you might check out Coppa in the South End. It's more towards the $$ end of your price range, but it's worth it.

Poe's Chester Square Pub and Rattlesnake- Updates?

Had a very good lunch at the Rattlesnake a few months back. Different types of tacos all around, ranging from ok to excellent. Can't really remember specifics, but what I do remember vividly was the lingering beer stench. Like MKFisher says, it's hard to take the food seriously or want to go, even though it's very close to my office, with that environment. Not particularly relaxing.

Going Away Lunch for a co-worker in Cambridge?

Golden Garden in Belmont? Rod Dee Thai in Porter, Russell House Tavern, Sofra, Little Q Hot Pot, Red Lentil, Strip T's, Istambu'ul?

Just what comes to mind immediately in that general geographic area.

Thmor Da ordering advice?

We're planning a return visit to Thmor Da soon, and I'm hoping to get some input on what's good there. Last time, I did a board search and didn't find much, but decided to wing it. When we got there we found the menu huge and overwhelming. It's like a yearbook! We got the Tiger's Tears, which were fantastic, but the other dishes, while fine, weren't that memorable, and the Tiger's Tears left me with the sense that we weren't getting the best of the kitchen. So, what's good there?
