kosher sugar babies and charleston chews
My brother claims he saw Sugar Babies with the OU at Walgreens in Florida - so they're probably just starting to hit the shelves!
Dougie's to Great Neck?
I believe that rumor is apparently true. Just heard this evening....apparently they are moving into the space previously occupied by Cafe 2012! Very exciting! :)
Kosher near Hunter Mountain
My son is going to camp up in Greenville in the Hunter Mountain region. Anyone know of any kosher restaurants anywhere near the area: I'm thinking there MUST be something in either Tannersville, Spring Glen, Fleischmanns or somewhere nearby?! Any help appreciated!
Favorite Meat & Dairy Restaurants in Teaneck
I need to take some non-Jewish friends out in Teaneck and am just as concerned with the ambience as I am with good food. They like Mediterranean/Middle Eastern stuff, so please offer me the best choices?
Thanks for any input.....
Teaneck Kosher
Meeting up with some friends who are not Jewish, would like some recommendations on high-end (preferably meat, but anything is good) Kosher places in / near Teaneck. All help appreciated!
Catskills Recommendations?
Just to to Woodbourne, about 9 miles from Swan Lake.....there are about 4 or 5 fleishig restaurants (Dougies, Burger Nosh, etc.) plus a couple of Dairy ones as well. Also have a few establishments in Loch Sheldrake, which is even closer.
Can I get a Great Neck primer?
As a resident, I'll give my two cents worth:
Chinese: Cho-Sen Village is head and shoulders above Wok Tov or Shanghai Grill, which are both reasonably ok.
Persian: I don't like this type of food but most folks say Colbeh is the standout, then you have Chatanooga & Danny's as second tier.
Meat: Bistro Grill is excellent and they have a deli nextdoor which is superb as well. Shish Kabob Palace has good food but is pricey IMHO, and then you have Empire K-Roasters which is decent. Supposedly Grill Point from Queens is moving in soon as well.
Dairy: Natali's has awesome food, never been disappointed there.
Pizza: My fave is Elite, some folks like La Pizzeria, also have King's and GN Pizza
Bagels: Bagel Mentch is the established place, and the newcomer GN Bagel Cafe seems to have some interesting stuff, bagels are quite good, more expensive than the Mentch.
Desserts: Haagen Dazs, Cold Stone, Carvel & Tasti-d-Lite, La Gelato
Butcher: Great Neck Glatt
Bakery: Strauss is reasonably good. Bread Basket place is opening soon evidently....
Others: Kandy King has good stuff for baskets, Shabbos gifts.
Everfresh is the local kosher grocery, not under Vaad but 99.9% is reliable stuff. Has Sushi shop in there too, which IS under OK. Also, a few other small grocery stores, A-Z, not sure of others' names, with plenty of kosher food available.
Finally, a few close-by choices: Mazur's Restaurant and Grocery in Little Neck and Dairy Queen is a nice little breakfast / lunch diner in New Hyde Park, plus the Colbeh in Roslyn is very quaint!
Hope that helps......
Grill Point to Cedarhurst
Interesting, I heard Grill Point is coming to Great Neck very shortly as well?! A welcome addition IMHO :)
Best Kosher Restaurant in Great Neck
They'd BETTER be to rationalize charging those exorbitant prices. For the $1.75 I paid this am for a bagel and cream cheese at the new place, I'd have walked out with $.36 in change at the more "Mentch-lach" priced original establishment. Without having any real strong opinion as to which is better, I doubt I'll plan on paying up. But hey, it looks like a nice place and they had some interesting stuff in there, so who knows?! Best o' luck to both of them :)
Best Kosher Restaurant in Great Neck
Knowing what you wrote about Kafe Kriza to be incorrect, I just called them to cofirm that they are NOT under the Vaad of Queens, but rather someone named Rabbi Ben Chaim from Queens, NY. I am not familiar with him and do NOT know of his reliability, but I distinctly remember announcements about them having lost Vaad of Queens coverage, at LEAST a year ago.
Best Kosher Restaurant in Great Neck
FYI, I'm pretty certain Kafe Kriza hasn't been certified kosher (at least not by the Vaad of Queens) for well over a year now. You should check to confirm before eating there.....
Also, there is a new Bagel place opening this week in the Waldbaum's shopping center, as well as a new Chinese place (believe it or not) right next door to Bagel Mentch, which is also evidently opening this week. You also forgot Chattanooga, the Persian restaurant, as well as Natali's Dairy (excellent!), Tasti-DLite ice cream, Strauss Bake Shop, and of course Kandi King :)
Great Neck is NOT lacking in kosher culinary choices, that's for sure!
Toaster Strudel
For all you folks trying to find POP-TART replacements and not happy with Nature's Path or even Kellogg's G0-TARTS, the old Pilsbury Toaster Strudels are back under the O/U again after losing their hashgacha years ago. They are in the freezer section and have to be toasted....and I happen to think they're not all that bad. Flavors are:
Apple
Blueberry
Cinnamon Roll with Cinnabon™ Cinnamon
Cherry
Chocolate Fudge with Hershey’s® Chocolate
Cream Cheese
Cream Cheese & Raspberry
Cream Cheese & Strawberry
Raspberry
Strawberry
Wildberry
ENJOY :)
Cholent
If you put enough water in the pot before lining it, it should never melt (at least it never happened to me!)
Cholent
Sounds like WAY too much work....I stick with simple, with a few Southern flavors for ethnic enhancement, and it always gets rave reviews:
potatoes, onions, barley, rolled oats, cream of wheat, 3 beans (kidney, baby lima, pinto), flanken meat, ketchup, bit o' honey, optional onion soup mix ( I prefer NOT), and only one spice needed: Lawry's Seasoning Salt...magic stuff! I use the bag inserts too, much neater! Here's my halachic insertion: careful about preparing on Friday afternoons, as it would have to be edible before Shabbos starts in order to avoid major issues....which means mine has been cooking since early Friday morning. One other tip: if you lay a kishke still wrapped in its inner (remove the outer) plastic on top of the cholent under the lid, it expands to twice its size and is quiet succulent by eatin' time.
Enjoy :)
Sapienza's Bakery
Anyone ever been to Sapienza's Bakery in Elmont, NY? Under the Kof-K despite open on Shabbos, all dairy....ordered a cake for my twins' birthday party and wondered if anyone had any experience with what's good...might wanna pick up a few goodies :)
Kozy Shack Gel Treats - anyone know if this can be bought?
Just bought some last night at Pathmark (New Hyde Park)...and while they are on sale for $3.00 for a 6-pack, it's mighty hard to rationalize versus the $1.00 for the Hunts 4-pack. Perhaps a bit more healthy?! Anyway, my kids did like the Sour Apple flavor, still didn't try the Cool Berry Burst or Fruit Punch Fusion :)
Duncan Hines pareve again!
Pinnacle Foods confirmed that its Duncan Hines cake mixes are again being re-formulated to be non-dairy and O/U Pareve. Lactose intolerant and kosher consumers are rejoicing throughout the land.
kosher poptarts
The Toaster Pastries from Nature's Path are still around, plus now Kellogg's has introduced "Go-Tarts" which have a hashgacha on them (KD...all Kellogg's stuff is under the Vaad of Massachusetts / Rabbinical Council of New England). They're like a Pop Tart bar, not bad :)
One fewer kosher restaurant in Great Neck
The Great Neck Grill is no longer....may it rest in peace.
Campbell's Soup
In case you haven't heard, as of August 30, 2006 Campbell’s Vegetarian Vegetable Soup is no longer certified as kosher by the Orthodox Union. Product bearing the OU symbol was manufactured prior to the termination of the kosher certification and is kosher.
New supervision has been picked up by the "Half-Moon-K", Kosher Overseers of America, the reliability of which seemingly has improved as of late (see link).

Dougies glorified junk food?
Went to Dougie's up in Woodbourne in the Catskills on Camp Visiting Day recently, and I must say the food was awesome. Burgers and dogs were great, healthy portions of quality fries, and of course the fire poppers were amazing. I rarely go to the ones closer by in the NYC area, but just wanted to share a positive Dougie's experience to combat all the harsh critiques listed so far!
Great Neck Kosher Restaurants
The newest place, Great Neck Grill, has great food, great service, and pretty nice atmosphere. Cho-sen may not be flexible, but they are delicious nonetheless. K-Roasters (Empire) is great for a cheap, quick meal...esp. the lunch specials. Sorry, Jeter, but I much prefer Elite Pizzeria over La Pizzeria, but hey, to each his own! And yes, Shish kabob is very good, fresh and tasty, though agreed, a bit pricey. I think Great Neck Grill is slightly cheaper and just as good. Not a big fan of Persian cuisine, but Colbeh has a great reputation. If you want pricey, go to Bistro Grill, great food and excellent desserts. Anyway, certainly a nice variety to choose from!
Recommendations for a kosher place in the Tri-State area to relax
My son is at the Sportstar Academy Kosher Sports Camp which is held at the Swan Lake Resort (formerly the Stevensville). It is by NO means a Hilton, but they have glatt kosher meals available, decent rooms, and a lot of sports facilities which are actually in pretty darn good shape. It's also right on Swan Lake so there is plenty of scenic walking and it might be a decent place to relax for a little while. Only about 10 miles from Woodbourne and even closer to Loch Sheldrake, so there are PLENTY of kosher restaurants in the area. And they have daily minyans, even a Kollel during the summer months.
