Superlative Japanese Restaurant in Astoria
... now, about Linn.... relax ! become a regular ,and TALK to them . I have had great meals every week . I always sit at the counter , and Tanaka is a gem . And a friendly guy . He, and the owner like to surf . The ingredients are superb , and I have had many of the cooked dishes . Excellent tempura ! And that cheesecake is killer .
Families with kids are giving it a relaxed neighborhood feel , and I think it will only get better ! ENJOY .
Superlative Japanese Restaurant in Astoria
Linn Restaurant , on Bway, in Astoria is a cool room , with a great sound system & Japanese movies projected on the wall . NO gimmicks when it comes to the food -- Chef Tanaka was at Masa , formerly . I wandered in on Tuesday , when Aliada was full , and loved the food so much I returned Thursday . Japanese black pork gyoza ! or pork belly , also super . Raw octopus/wasabi . ( Fresh wasabi used , and on the side with sashimi . )
Very friendly --- parents from the neighborhood were welcomed with their kids , and the Chef tried his best to feed them . Very attentive wait-staff -- they also seemed really interested in learning from the Chef . Also , a respectable list of very fine quality sake , at OK prices .A sushi bar is judged by its rice , the egg omelet , mackerel , and shrimp : this place more than passes muster .
Entrees feature their take on food -- which is a little quirky --- a salmon dish is garnished with a small bagel-and-creamcheese -- a nod to NY .But , again , highest quality -- it is wild King Salmon . When I asked for traditional Japanese dishes , they were perfect . Plus extra touches -- like good home-made oshinko , fresh Japanese smelts, onogiri , ochazuke... I could eat there for a week !!! Great quality fluke , hamachi , Japanese snapper , tako , eel ... Plus deseserts that were also inventive .

New and Untested in Jackson Heights
Leave JH un -yuppified !!! I am a Chef- 40 years in the kitchen --- a 'Shaheen ' customer since 1980 , a 'Tacolandia ' customer ... Yeah , a wine bar might be nice... HOWEVER - the City is 20 minutes away .I was out for a stroll & dinner last night ,& I went to check out 2 new places in Manhatten : 'Gottino' And " I Sodi " --- I did not even want to walk in ---- attitude & money was the vibe from the youngish patrons . We walked up to 'Pastis' the same scene & din .Finally , in relief , we fled to authentic , family-owned 'Riazor ' on 16th Street , to watch the game , eat the BEST pulpo , washed down with good wine & strong margaritas , served by a friendly ( foreign ) staff . GIVE ME THAT in JH , and let the rich people pay what the market will bear in NYC . WE GOT THE FOOD !!!! JoeySunnyside P.S. I thought Tomo was OK. Talk to the ( Chinese) sushi Chef for the skinny . He recomended great Spanish mackerel when I was there.
Taqueria Coatzingo -- which one?
Try the one on the N. side of Roosevelt , between 76 & 75th . It is also open real late .They also have a bakery a door down .The barbacoa , meatballs , chilli rellenos , and tamales are good . The enchiladas are only OK .Good selection of beers , though a little $$ for the nabe' . I like it & they are friendly... + good horchata . I also like TACOLANDIA for tacos al pastor . Fresh & friendly .. they are always busy .
n. indian dessert in JH
Raj Bogh on 37th Ave near 74th Street --- 0 atmosphere , but a-to-z selection . good turn -over means fresh . You can sit forever , and the vegetarian (only) food is good and CHEAP . They have a rolled and stuffed Gujarati dish that is like the best-ever stuffed cabbage . The young people who work there all speak English , and are patient in translating and describing what they have.
Turkish in Queens: Hemsin v. Turkish Grill
I love Turkish Grill -- especially Mon. & Tues. nights . Great breads -- the lahmacun & pides - great appetizers -- too bad the rice is Uncle Ben's , but you can ask to substitute bulghur . In way ,way Eastern Queens , in Little Neck , on the City line on Northern Blvd . there is the Shish Kebab restaurant , which has the BEST Turkish food of all - and I have been a fan of the cuisine for more than 40 years !!! The chef/ owner Ramazan is a gem!!!!
Taiwanese "Small Eats" - Da Chang Bao Xiao Chang
Try "Lai Food 66 " in Flushing , across from the Sheraton Hotel . I have been eating there since '88 or so , and they have large selection of pig -parts that are great : Spicy pig's ear , crispy -fried intestine , pork belly w. fresh bamboo shoots . I do not speak Chinese , but ask them --if any other restaurant has such a large Taiwanese menu , I haven't seen it . Over-all good quality , and great prices . Also - it is open late -2 or 3 a.m. on the weekend .I love this place . Also - cheap beer & hot sake .
