Christmas Eve Traditional Meals

We make Oyster Poorboys using my Dad's recipe. He is no longer with us, but his awesome sandwich recipe lives on.

I miss those crappy candy cigarettes of my childhood, too. Chalky goodness!

Keep Out!!!!!!!! Tell us your secret stash and how you protect it

The vegetable crisper drawer fools 'em every time. I've also been known to hide Reese's Cups in a plastic bin under my bed.

Gack! Mooncakes!

Ooof! I received some of these ration-dense jewels once, and politeness dictated that I eat them in the presence of the donor. I felt full, and somewhat spiritually ill after consuming them. I'm not sure I could do it again. I am on Team Re-Gift 'Em. (somebody must like them)

What do you count as a vegetable?

Do you classify ketchup as a vegetable?

Overdone roast - other uses?

I made a beef salad once in a case like this. Cut the beef into bite-sized chunks, add sliced celery, pepperoncini, red onion, some dried oregano, olive oil, and lots of vinegar. It was tasty enough to take my mind off mourning the loss of a nice rare roast. Your chili idea was not too shabby, though.

Best Potato Chips

Yep. Lard is the "secret" ingredient that makes Grandma Utz my most favorite potato chip. I recently visited the factory in PA, and brought back a large box that I left on a table in the breakroom at work. They were gone by the end of the day...

ISO Coffee Pot Cleaner

Does it have to be a liquid? Since moving to an extremely hard water area, I've been using a product called Lemi Shine. As near as I can tell, it's basically citric acid crystals. I add a couple of spoonsful to my water-filled coffee carafe, stir with a chopstick to dissolve, then run the resulting liquid through a cycle--using a filter in the basket. Run a carafe of plain water through the cycle, et Voila! My carafe sparkles and my machine is free of crusty deposits. I do this every weekend. I purchase this product at my local WalMart.

Best airplane food you've ever had?

I got a nice full Irish breakfast on a flight on British Midlands--egg, black and white pudding, little sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms, etc. So filling and tasty, it set me up for the rest of the day. Other people have mentioned Air India. I flew them once, and was delighted to have a spicy shrimp curry that was tasty.

taste flashbacks

It sounds like it might be a form of synesthesia. I'm not a neurologist, and don't even play one on TV, so you might want to wiki it. I'm assuming these aren't actual odors that trigger the taste sensation, but something is triggering the taste sensation that doesn't seem to have anything to do with it? Like, you saw a brown dog and now you taste canned peaches? Or you were thinking it might rain, and now you've got the taste of succotash? That sort of thing?

Cool.

Barilla. I've always been happy with it and I can always find it. I love the Bucatini Rigate.

Food Odors at Work

So she smoked and ate popcorn at the same time? I have smoked off and on for most of my (teenage and) adult life. Eating while smoking is so gross! I wouldn't wanna see that...

please help cure me - i always make too much food!

I really hate to waste food. I find that keeps me from making more than I care to eat later.

Cooking with urine

The very idea makes me spiritually ill. I'll have to insist on full disclosure, i.e. Trans fat--4 g, Urine--5ml, etc.
Yikes!

What was the worst food you HAD to eat as a kid?

We were required to take at least a small serving of everything, and eat it. No fussing would have been tolerated. The things that I was "made" to eat that I just didn't care for were: Okra, Eggplant, and--the worst--Swiss Chard. All were fresh from the garden. I like all of these things now, and were I able to get my hands on any of the above, fresh from the garden, I would think I was a lucky, lucky girl!

They also taught us table manners. I have found from raising my own children and having their friends eat over that this seems to be a lost art.

Anyone else experience this?

What manual can opener do you like?

Is the "P-38" the tiny little folding opener that looks like it might be a bit of scrap metal?

What manual can opener do you like?

I've got an OXO Goodgrips that my MIL bought for me. She had arthritis, and loved hers so much she bought one for me. I've had it about 8 years now, and it works fine. I hope it still works when my hands become arthritic... I've got a small collection of emergency back-up openers, too. Some are quite rudimentary, some just plain scary.

Astronaut Ice-Cream

The freeze-dried icecream is the only reason I would go willingly to the Air and Space Museum with my husband and son...I love that stuff for no good reason. But then again, I love Circus Peanuts, too. ( The large, orange, banana-flavored peanut-shaped marshmallows)

Do wedding cakes ever taste good?

That sounds like my wedding cake. It came from a local German bakery, and I think it was called a Sacher Torte. I'm sure I didn't spell that right, and I might not have the name right. After all, it was a long time ago (22 years). It was good, though.

Mom's Chowhound annoyances

That's so interesting because I had almost the opposite experience growing up. My mother was ahead of the curve on healthy eating, and even though we certainly weren't rich she never bought groceries frugally. All the other kids "got" to have twinkies, squishy white bread, koolaid, processed cheese, etc. We had wheat bread, and the only white ever allowed was Arnold's or Pepperidge Farm. Every thing she bought was good quality honest food, and no junk. I absolutely hated it! I felt so deprived and jealous of the other "normal kids". After I left home I spent a couple of years exploring the joys of Miracle Whip, Velveeta, Little Debbie, soda pop--the whole gamut of over-processed foods. I've finally come full circle and appreciate now what I didn't at the time. Your mom's soup sounds pretty good to me.

I still love raspberry zingers, though.

Has anyone ever eaten purslane?

I've made tiny tea sandwiches with it. Mix the leaves with softened cream cheese to make a sandwich spread. A little S&P is helpful.

Garbage Bowl

Awwww. A "superdog"--that's so cute. On a related note, after our dog died, it took me a long time to stop turning to the side and dropping scraps down for her when doing food prep.

Garbage Bowl

Nope! Different types of garbage go different places--compost, recycleables, etc. Why separate it two times? I find that pulling my kitchen garbage over to where I'm working is convenient enough.

What foods do you find disgusting?

I know I'm in the minority on this, but I can't stand cilantro. To me it tastes like parsley dipped in clorox. I also tried natto once. Ugh! I'm not sure it should even be classified as food. The Devil's own snot, I tell 'ya.

Can of beans...your favorite recipe using one

Oooh! That sounds both attractive and delicious! I have another--drained and rinsed black beans, chopped fresh garlic (to taste, but I like lots), undrained small jar of chopped pimientos, and olive oil. Mix together and let meld. Serve at room temperature over hot rice and feel free to garnish with avocado. Truthfully, when I make this I don't use just one can of beans because it's so darn addictive.

Can of beans...your favorite recipe using one

How about an easy bean salad? Drain and rinse a can of white beans and add finely chopped onion and celery. Dress with vinaigrette or a salad dressing of your choice. You can throw in olives, artichoke hearts, sun dried tomatoes--whatever is in your 'fridge condiment collection, then a sprinkle of parsley or other complimentary herbs. It's pretty basic, but can be served chilled or at room temperature.
