black cod recipes - moved from Los Angeles board

Bah is right! No, I didn't get the other replies, but I really appreciate you taking the time to reply here as well :o) I'm going to try the hot oil application to the ribs as suggested by fourunder, and the smoking and broiling to the collar - I think it could take a bit more heat (the ribs are rather thin). I'll let you both know, maybe even post a pix :o) thanks so much!!!

Thanks so much! sounds really good, will probably do this application to the ribs. I'll let you know how it turns out :o)

black cod recipes - moved from Los Angeles board

HI!! Just got lucky enough to score some super fresh black sod (sable fish, butter fish, whatever), and not too sure what to do with it. Got two huge cheeks (had no idea the fish was so big), probably gonna do a miso marinade, a la Nobu, but then there's s bit of collar (about 1/2 pound) and two ribs. any suggestions? Planning on a cod-three-ways menu. thanks!! :o)

New Pizzeria Luigi to open in Little Italy on India Street, San Diego

I was so stoked to see this on the 3D's!!! Previously, Bronx was the only place in SD I found (and I've tried soo many) with really tasty, genuine NY style pizza, but they always act like they're doing you a favor by serving you. Very crass, and very UNlike most of the pizzeria employees I've ever had the pleasure of visiting when in NY. I went to Luigi's this weekend and it was FANtastic! The sauce was a bit sweeter than I usually like, but the quality and overall flavor more than made up for it. And those fabulous garlic knots!!! OMG!!! The service was really good, the guy was very polite and smiled and was joking around with everyone in the (long) line. It's well worth the wait, trust me :o) Looking forward to trying out the Little Italy location (I live in the Gaslamp). Drove by yesterday - no line (yet), but, then again, the parking around there sure isn't the easiest.

"Sometimes in these cases the particular quality of the items that you found so tasty over there just don't taste the same way after making a long trip, or need their local environment to taste "that way."

- you're absolutely right in every way. I actually managed bring into the US some hot peppers I bought from this elderly lady in Longji, and, even though it's FROM China, it still doesn't taste the same. But the flavors do recount the experience, which is great.

And, no, I will never stop trying, though I know at some point I will just have to become apppreciative of the uniqueness of the flavors out here. The memories of the foods I ate in China will never go away, but there is no use in continually comparing as that will ineviteabley only lead to disappointment. But they will drive me to eat my way through this entire country trying!! :o)

looking for authentic Chinese restaurants in the US

Hi There! I actually traveled throughout the country extensively. I'm mailnly searching for excellent rice noodle soups and dumplings at the moment. And some excellent greens, So far, on suggestion, tried Ba Ren in San Diego. The cold noodles were great, the egg and tomato soup pretty decent. Will be going back to eat my way through their menu.
On my way today to Dan Dan Guilin and Mei Long Village. got scared away from Din Tai Fung... apparently the lines are huge and the service not too great. Oh, who am I kidding? Will probably go to both! :o)

"Heartily agree with Kirkk's take on the Xiao Long Bao at Dumpling Inn: they just can't stand up against better versions"

- yep, I would agree, as well. Visited there a week after returning from China and was not at all impressed. Unlike others who posted here, I actually enjoyed their service - they were super nice and really trying to find out what it was I was looking for, but the food just fell flat.

Naomi & Kirk - thanks for the tip on Ba Ren. Just went there last week and got their cold noodles - one smell and I was right back in China! It was great! The only thing that threw me off was the amount of oil, just as warned. Don't remember having that experience in China, but the flavor was so delicious I ate the entire dish :o)

Saltyraisins - "Let me know if you find your eggs and tomato." I tried the egg & tomato soup at Ba Ren - it was ok, a bit greasy. The egg was fried in tons of oil, not like what I ate in China which was much lighter, but I will be trying a few of their other egg and tomato dishes, as well as just about everything else there, and will be sure to post my experiences.

Just got in to LA...I only have a few hours but will try to hit up as many places as my stomach can handle! :o)

I just tried Ba Ren las week and it was great! The smell just about took me back to China. I had their cold noodles and an egg and tomato soup. Looking forward to going there again to try out the rest of their menu. Thanks!

Yeah, I questioned my friend on my return and he stands his ground. He just doesn't eat there. Says he looses weight each time. I ended up gaining a bit! LOL!!

Just got into LA and am on my way to check out Mei Long Village, as well as Dan Dan Guilin. Will be sure to report back!

Thanks so much for all the suggestions!!

Good idea, will be sure to do that.

I attempted to post a question to Chinese, tourists or residents or expats, that might know where I can find certain Chinese foods here in San Diego, but that post was removed.

May I repost it? Just hpoing there may be someone out there with good suggestions.

Thanks!

Hi there!

I just sent you a reply, about 10 minutes ago, but think I somehow deleted something because it disappeared. Did you get it?

Darn, sorry, great in the kitchen... and for sure in front of a dinner plate, but not so much on the computer. I am trying, though!! :o)

ok, so just in case you did not get it ( I still have no idea what I did), the first pix, on the left, is from Longji. It's a bamboo rice - OMG, so sweet and delicious! next to it is a wonderful, the best ever, duck dish. I kinda felt bad... many duck as I walked up the mountain. cute, and yep, got pix. then, on the way down, every time I saw a duck I would just say "thank you for a lovely meal." I mean, what do you do? I know I just ate their relative. not only that, but I really enjoyed it! Talk about fresh!

The second pix, on the right, is one of the least expensive (10 yuan) & most delicious meals I had out there. In Suzhou. Order at the counter, open kitchen, soup with wonton and some vegi and crab dumplings. fabulous!

Looking forward to return. There are some places I did not see that I would love to, and others that I enjoyed so much I needed more time, but did not have it. Yep, worth another trip, for sure!

In the meantime, I will revile in finding great places to dine and reminisce. And maybe even find new things I can tell my Chinese friends about so they can be jealous! :o)

I'll be sure to keep you posted, esp when I get this blog thing rolling! And I will for sure check out all of your suggestions. Can't wait!

And, I'll let you know what I run into to !

Thank you!!!

Ok, thanks for the suggestions and for making sure I reach the right folk. I think I did post on the home-cooking board, but will for sure try the food media and news board as well.

It's amazing all the responses I have received so far. I was bummed out for a bit, thinking I may never taste all the good stuff I had out there again, but it appears hope is on the horizon. Going to try a few spots out here in the next week, very much looking forward to it!

I was hoping some Californians or other US foodies,or anyone who may be living in or visiting China might know some spots to try out... can I re-post on the China board, or is that just not a great idea? I don't think this sort of site would be scrutinized out there, would it? I mean, it's up and running, and active, no?

tnx!! :o)

Spicy and Sour Rice Noodles at Dandan’s Guilin with Pics

Yes, they do!

Have heard from both, as well as others, of course have checked out your blog as well! Will be in LA in a few weeks, and on my way to the Guilin noodle place! Can't wait! Even the name is perfect! Will try some of the dumplings you recommended there as well.

I just love foodies! You go out there, crying for help at just having to find that, whatever it is that could not be so urgent, but really is, and suddenly, people are there to help. It's awesome!! :o)

Tnx!!!

I'm actually trying to figure out how to blog about my food experience in China. It was just too good! I'm not a computer savvy individual, but once it's up, I will be sure to let you know. As well as about my findings here in the US!

For sure!! this is the third time today someone has mentioned this place, and I am going either tomorrow or Monday. I'm stoked! If there is any hope to relive all those amazing flavors... life is good! Thanks so much!!

looking for authentic Chinese restaurants

HI!

Most of my loves are really simple, or what I thought were simple cuz I've tried to recreate them without much luck, mainly noodle soups. Some rice noodlesoup with a spicy ground meat (probably pork) and pickled greens, of what type I have no idea. I ate that for breakfast almost daily. Something I atein Chengdu, right outside of the Wu Huo temple, local street food, it was called "bean curd jelly." it was amazing! Spicy, foolof flavor... soy nuts, I think, some sort of noodles... I have pix, but must admit that half of the time I really had no idea what is was I was eating. that was part of the fun! it tasted good, I ate it... done deal!

Two of the best meals I had - one was at the Buddhist vegi place at Shoalin temple. I love vegetarian food, but am not a huge fan of "fake meat", like temph and tofu. So I ordered their "lamb" which was really these (to me, very unknown looking) mushrooms, and everything else on the plate just made it wonderful. The 2nd was at a tea farmer's house in Hangzhou, right by the Dragon Well tea plantation, this lady made us an array of dishes, very simple and soooo good! Greens, eggplant, shrimp. Hmmm, I think there was an egg and tea dish as well.

Oh, and this amazing lunch in Longji... bamboo rice, the best duck ever! of course, the dim sum at De Fa Chang, this super fresh clam shell stuffed with shrimp and abalone I had in Dali.. I could keep going and going! It really was fabulous!

Basically, the flavor is what is driving this search. I loved everything I ate in China with the exception of the westernized Chinese food on the Yangtze cruise. Even the most rudimentary dishes made me super happy. Eggs with tomatoes - yum,!!! The fruit and veggies, fresh, were incredible. I was not disappointed!

I was warned to take protein bars b/c I wouldn't like the food. People have shared stories where they lost 20 pounds on their trips. Well, the one bar I actually did take with me (I figured, at the worse, I can eat rice, no?) came back with me, untouched, and somehow, even with all the biking and dragging luggage and hiking... I actually gained a few pounds! Yum!!

And I'm totally excited to have received all this info. One of the most difficult things about leaving China was thinking that all those flavors I"ve come to love may never resurface. Now there is hope! :o)

I will definitely try all the places you suggested, and will post my experiences. In the meantime, this new addiction to Chinese food has made me want to blog my experiences out there. And yes, I took many many pix of my food, which always drew stares but that wasn't anything new. I'm no computer expert, but as soon as I figure it out I will post that as well. Here are a couple of pix...

Seriously though, thanks so very much for taking the time to reply and I am so looking forward to checking these places out! I will be up in LA in a few weeks, and the anticipation is growing.

:o) Ro

S.G.V looks like the place to go. I'm almost as excited as I was to go on the trip in the first place!

Any suggestions for certain spots? I will be up in LA in a few weeks, and would love to give a few (dozen :o) places a try.

Super, Naomi!

I will for sure try Ba Ren this weekend, then run through your list within the next week or so. I didn't get the chance to visit Hong Kong, so I'm very curious to see what Pearl and China Max have to offer.

Looking forward to it!

seeking authenic Chinese in San Diego (or area)

Tnx Amyzan!

I actually visited many different cities, so please bear with this list:

Beijing - Zhengzhou - Kaifeng - Luoyang - Xian - Kunming - Dali - LiJiang - Zhongdian - Chengdu - Mt. Emei - Chongqing - Yichang/Wuhan (Yangtze cruise was great, but also where I understood that Americanized_Chinese food will no longer do!) - Guilin - Yanshuo - Hangzhou - Suzhou - Shanghai. , so I enjoyed many different cuisines of China and found that I loved them all!

Things I like the most were: what was to become my breakfast staple - a soup for which i can't find the name. It had rice noodles, some sort of pickled green veggies, a spicy ground meat (pork?), scallions. I love dim sum, had some great stuff at Da Fa Cheng and great soup dumplings in Shanghai, but, so far, cant find anything similar here. Tried Dumpling Inn, it was ok, I would def go back, but it just wasn't "it," ya know?

Even something as simple as the eggs with tomato would be wonderful to come by (it was actually one of my favorite things to eat out there). There was this really flavorful spicy "bean curd jelly," a deceptively simple garlic noodle (tried to replicate it, a huge disaster :o), I could just go on and on...

Seriously, the only food I did not enjoy was the stuff on the cruise, but I understand that they had to appeal to so many different people so food was, well, certainly not very Chinese in flavor.

Im actually trying to figure out how to write up a blog about my food experience there since it was so awesome, and yes, I did take many pictures (def got some weird stares!). As soon as I do, I'll be sure to send the link.

I will try Kirk's blog right now!

Again, thanks!! :o)

Spicy and Sour Rice Noodles at Dandan’s Guilin with Pics

OMG! Tnx soo much for this post! I just returned from a 6-week trip to China and have been dying to find that type of soup. I used to eat it practically every day and I really miss it. I live in SD but go to LA often and will for sure visit Dandan's! Any other suggestions for authentic, non-Amercianized Chinese cuisine?

looking for Chinese soup recipe

Hi! Just came back from a 6-week trip all over China, and fell in love with this soup I would eat mostly for breakfast. Def chicken stock, rice noodles, some sort of pickled greens (green beans?), a spicy ground meat (pork?), scallions. So good, but can't find the name, hence can't search for a recipe. Any suggestions? Thanks!

seeking authenic Chinese in San Diego (or area)

Hi!

I live in San Diego and honestly would drive hours if someone could tell me where a genuine, non-Americanized Chinese establishment exists. I know I am asking for a lot, but I just returned from a 6-week trip there and am longing for the flavors I was lucky to have experienced. What I appreciated most was that the flavors were simultaneously simple and complex, the ingredients regional and fresh, and always very satisfying. Even a bowl of soup or eggs and tomato always hit the spot. Any suggestions for cookbooks or websites would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!!
