coffee/lunch/brunch/bakeries near Bloordale or Brockton Village?

There are lots of independent coffee shops in the area: I like the Brockton Haunt for coffee and hanging out - it is small and bright and the people are friendly. Belljar Cafe and Bivy on Dundas are also good. There's also Holy Oak and Sterling Social on Bloor, and Propeller Coffee and Cafe Neon north of Bloor.

For brunch, Starving Artist and Bivy are good options. Belljar also has brunch on weekends now. I plan to try Hello Darling on Lansdowne at some point.

For baking, try Home Baking Co. on Bloor. They have ice cream sandwiches, really tasty butter tarts, brownies, etc...

Preserved Lemons - Where in Downtown TO?

Super Alvand (the Middle Eastern food place) in Kensington Market had them last time I went, but I haven't been there in a long time. Hope this helps.

Kanom Krok (Thai Coconut Pudding) in Toronto?

I have had this dessert at the Thai festival ( every year for the past three years, but I don't want to wait a whole year for my next fix. This fried-dumpling-like food is made from fresh coconut milk, rice and sugar. The mixture is boiled then fried in a specially cast pan. The resulting bite-sized hemispheres are crisp-chewy brown on the outside and soft and gooey inside. The cooks who made them at the stall this year were not from a restaurant. Does anyone here know of a Thai restaurant in Toronto that makes these?

masala chai in GTA

re: kensington - I'm pretty sure I've seen Kitimai brand chai at House of Spice on Augusta. They come in dark green foil packages, either loose leaf or in bags.

Any roof top patio's for a lovely dinner?

Ultra supper club on Queen Street (where Bamboo used to be) has a beautiful patio and nice view of downtown. Haven't tried much of their food, but what I had (tomato and buffalo mozzarella salad) was good.

According to their website (, they have a separate patio menu. Photos of the patio view are on their site too under "Decor" - I can't seem to view their gallery.

Have a good celebration!
