Saturday night in Fort Point- need your opinions!
So I might be overthinking this, but I wanted to get all of your very educated opinions on this. Saturday night, going out to dinner with 4-5 people, and then will be met by probably 5 more friends. Originally we had a smaller group for dinner (3) and I was hoping to go to Sportello and Drink for dinner and cocktails, and meet up with other friends at Lucky's. Now with larger dinner group, I think Sportello is out of the plan, due to counter service only. Is that correct? There are no tables at Sportello, right? And no "dinner" food at Drink?
So now I am thinking about Lucky's and Barlows. From the reviews here and on Yelp,it seems that Barlows is getting mixed reviews for food. One reviewer said the food was better than the Beer Gardens but not quite as good as Franklin Southie- if thats the case, that is fine for this group of people. Any other feedback here? Is the food better at Barlow's or Lucky's? Has anyone been able to get a read on the Saturday night crowd at Barlow's? Lucky's is very fun, but for a group of 10 people who want to catch up a bit, it might be a bit too crowded and crazy.
Obviously I am being quite indicisive on planning this... would love your feedback, hounds!
ISO Meyer Lemons
Has anyone seen Meyer Lemons for sale in any Boston grocery stores recently? I am craving all things citrus and would like experiment with baking with meyer lemons this week.. Thanks!
Looking for a good spot for breakfast/brunch in between Groton and Boston
Oops- sorry about not specifying the state. After I saw the Pawtucket suggestion, I realized I had screwed up on that! As a regular poster on the Boston board, I guess I don't know the ways of the New England board world. Next time, I will definitely include the state!
I did go to Nancy's Cafe at the Minute Man Airfield in Stow, MA. I enjoyed it very much. It is a very cozy, almost diner-like place with great ingredients and some creative menu items. I loved being able to watch the small planes taking off on the adjacent runway. I ordered a special- an eggs benedict with (what seemed to be a homemade) apple chicken sausage patty. Very tasty- as were the accompanying homefries, which I usually don't eat. I couldn't resist these! I would definitely recommend Nancy's for its great food and unique atmosphere/location. It didn't hurt that Sunday morning was a beautiful, sunny, snowy morning.

I saw some good reviews of Nancy's Airport Cafe too- if I go I will report back! Thanks.
ISO fresh roasted coffee beans- downtown, South End or Back Bay
Realized I hadn't checked back in for this... thanks to all that responded! I have been buying from the South End Formaggio, but I will try the other ones listed here. Very helpful!
Also- grinding my beans and buying fresh(er) beans has totally changed my coffee situation at home- the difference is incredible. And I love my French Press too.
Looking for a good spot for breakfast/brunch in between Groton and Boston
I will be traveling from the Groton/Westford area back to Boston (via a stop at Wilson's Farm in Lexington) on Sunday morning and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a good brunch along the way? Littleton, Acton, Concord, Bedford, Lexington.... any thoughts? Would be willing to go a bit off my route for something really delicious- particularly if it is one of those farm-y, local food types of spots.
Thanks!!
Woodward at the Ames
same reaction to the scene... hopefully this will calm down a bit, since its a nice new option for me close to work. I also wasn't completely sold on the modern + rustic decor combo attempt- I like the concept in general, I just wasn't sold on it ( I think the big names involved could have done better). House red wine was a nice shiraz at an affordable $7 with a generous pour. Mushroom toasts were yummy.
Where to find ras el hanout in Boston?
Yep- bought it there last week, have already used it twice- delicious. Try it on a roasted chicken (or Turkey??)
Suggestions for not-too-expensive restaurants to take a date to? Preferably in Cambridge/Somerville.
I think Garden at the Cellar is a fantastic date spot. I also think the food at Plough and Stars can be pretty good too- and the place is VERY cozy- good lighting. If its earlier in the night (7 or 8) it will still be pretty quiet, but with a good buzz in the air. River Gods might be fun/interesting as well.
ISO dried pozole
Tropical Foods in Dudley Square or the Hi-Lo grocery on Centre Street in Hyde Square (Jamaica Plain) might have this ingredient....
ISO fresh roasted coffee beans- downtown, South End or Back Bay
Hi- in my mission to make better coffee at home, I recently purchased a french press and a coffee grinder. Now I am looking for quality, fresh roasted coffee beans downtown or in the South End/Back Bay area. Any suggestions? I am thinking about something like Intelligentsia, but as far as I know, they only sell at Bloc 11 and Diesal Cafes in Somerville....
Thanks!
Boston with "no reservations"
An interesting place to walk around would be the Fort Point Channel neighborhood of Boston- just across the channel from downtown/Financial District/South Station area, the neighborhood is full of warehouse buildings and very intersting industrial architecture. This would be a great photo opportunity as well as a good place to stop for some treats- particularly if you plan to stop at Flour for some Boston Cream Pie. While other posters were pointing you in the direction of Flour in the South End, their second shop is located in the Fort Point area, on Farnsworth Street behind the Children's Museum. If you are in the area when its time for a cocktail or dinner, Drink or Sportello would also be a fun place to visit.
That being said, the South End is also a very photogenic neighborhood as well. Not sure if you said when you'd be in town, but if its anytime in the next month or so, another interesting thing to check out if you were in the South End on at Sunday would be the South End Open Market, located on Harrison Avenue. Google it for more information- lots of crafts, antiques, farmers' stalls- a nice way to spend time on a Sunday.
What do I have to do to get a proper cappuccino around here?
Bob I also have this issue. I wonder if Flatblack Coffee (near the corner of Broad and Milk Streets) has a good cappuccino? I have tried their coffee before, but not ordered any espresso drinks.
I go to the cafe at Marliave most days, but I have only tried their coffee, which is quite good. I don't think they have a "head barista" type of person working there, and there has been some change-up of who staffs the cafe. There has also apparently been a pastry chef change (my co-worker asked about the absence of the miniture cupcakes that Marliave had been rocking for the past few months.... yum). Still prefer their cafe to any other in the immediate area.
Also close by (relatively speaking) is the Boston Common Coffee company, which is down Washington Street next to the under-construction Modern Theatre. Haven't tried their espresso either.
Lower Depths, Kenmore Sq
Hmm I don't know... I dream about the fish wrap (sort of a gigantic fish taco/burrito type of thing)- I think its quite tasty. I love the atmosphere and the beer selection as well. Definitely better than other pub food in the area and I would say my favorite spot in the Kenmore/Fenway neighborhood.
However, if the OP was looking for something more like Tory Row, I would check out Audubon Circle closer to St. Mary's T stop on Beacon Street- same owners.
Pls help - Sesuit Cafe
anyone know if the Sesuit Cafe is over after Labor Day? I tried calling yesterday and got no answer, but thought it might be open on weekends in Sept?
cocktails for 75-100 - kenmore/fenway location?
Not sure if they have a private space, but the Foundation Lounge itself might be a good place to consider.
I need Help Planning a Rehearsal Dinner
Sel de la Terre and a Legal Seafoods are right next to your hotel, both might be able to meet your needs.
Searching for a great Thanksgiving Dinner in Western Mass or Southern Vermont
Sounds PERFECT! Thanks for the advice! I will let you know how it goes if we end up there for TG.
Searching for a great Thanksgiving Dinner in Western Mass or Southern Vermont
So many great VT recommendations! anyone have any ideas for Western Mass? I have shared some of these ideas with the family, but they seem to be interested in exploring the area around Northampton and further west more than I had originally thought. Something like the Red Lion Inn (which I have read some pretty mixed reviews about recently). Any suggestions?
Fall 2009 Openings and Closings
I thought I read somewhere the Bombay Club was looking to move (or expand) into the Pho Republique space?

Thanks everyone! I will look into these places and report back. I really appreciate your help.
Searching for a great Thanksgiving Dinner in Western Mass or Southern Vermont
Hi all! My family will be visiting my sister in Northampton over Thanksgiving and we are looking for a great place to have Thanksgiving dinner. We are willing to travel throughout Western Mass and into Southern Vermont for a really great meal- especially with great local ingredients and cozy atmosphere.
Any ideas?
THANKS!
Cafe at Marliave
I have been meaning to write about this for the past few weeks... the Marliave is now using their Province Street small bar area for a cafe during the day. Coffee, housemade breakfast goodies like muffins, scones, biscotto, little cupcakes, cinnamon buns, etc- i have tasted a few different things and they are very tasty and sold at a pretty good price. Coffee is very good too- both hot and iced. Today I noticed that they are also serving house-made ice cream.
I am pleased with this recent addition to the Marliave complex- we don't have a lot of small cafe/bakery type places in this area of Downtown.
Summer 2009 openings and closings
Tried this last week- I had a caprese panini. It was pretty tasty, although I think the bread was too thick/it wasn't left on the grill long enough, because it was pretty cool in the middle. Sort of like a warmed mozz and tomato sandwich. But the location is nice, tables are nice, iced tea was tasty. Not bad.
Summer 2009 openings and closings
nope, but I noticed that they were on the list for Taste of Allston this Sunday afternoon, looking forward to trying their food there. ( tickets are only $15 online- lots of delicious Allston food to be had )
Fave Gnocchi dishes?
had the gnocchi appetizer at Franklin Southie last night- it was unreal... literally can't stop thinking about it!
Z Square Cambridge?
it looked like the one near BU was also closed last night around 6....
What restaurants don't we talk about enough?
I have always been curious about both Equator and Seiyo- looking forward to your review! Any insight on Seiyo?
How's the food at The Field in Cambridge?
Food is ok- nothing too special. If you are looking for bars in Cambridge with good food, i would recommend the Plough and Stars (i have actually never eaten here but it looks and smells very good) which is up Mass Ave a bit, or River Gods, which is also close to Central Square. In Harvard Square, Shays (which actually seems more like an English pub than an Irish pub) has pretty good food for a bar- their soups and sandwiches are always really tasty (and very affordable). And their hot apple cider with port that they are serving right now is TO DIE FOR. I'd like some of that right about now!
Corner of Dartmouth and Boylston
Also if you go the other way, you will hit Bar Lola (corner of Dartmouth and Comm Ave), which has decent tapas and good drinks. Can be affordable if you play it right. Don't get sucked into Brownstone... Coda is the best on that corner of Dartmouth and Boylston. Also if you walk a few more blocks towards Hynes, you could try Cafe Jaffa (btw Boylston and Newbury, on Hereford I think?), which serves large, pretty inexpensive plates of Middle Eastern food. It can be very tasty! But seriously- split these dishes and eat family style, and you will get a lot of food for a great price.
