anyone tried churros calientes yet??
The churros are amazing. The chocolate is made more for the american market, so if you really want to go authentic, then ask the guy to make it thick like in Spain. Otherwise, it's a bit runny, but still sticks to the churro.
Young green coconuts?
I'm getting them in DTLA, so problem is solved. It's not about carrying them around the party, but rather about having a guy with a machete dispatch them to order for my guests. It's part of a theme. It doesn't work the same with the shaved ones. If I could hang them up in a palm tree and send a Mayan kid up there to grab them first then I would consider the process complete, but that doesn't really work with my current landscaping.
Young green coconuts?
It's more of a look than a taste, but it does preserve better when unshaven. Also, you can store the unshaven coconuts in a tub of ice without ruining the exterior.
Young green coconuts?
Those are good prices for me. I checked out the first suggestion of 99 Ranch and saw them, but they were the shaved version. I'm really looking for truly fresh off the tree style.
Young green coconuts?
I want to be able to buy dozens of the young, green coconuts and hack them open with a machete, but all I can find are the ones that have been stripped and made ready to go at places like wholefoods. I want the unadulterated version for a big party. Does anyone know?
Trucks That Suck
I'm just starting to feel annoyed by the beastly trucks roaming around everywhere. hell, a sushi truck parked in front of my house the other day and did some private catering. I would just much rather see food stands/carts start taking the place of the large trucks. I want the street food without the roaming trucks.
Trucks That Suck
For awhile there I loved just about every truck I tried, now I kind of can't stand them. They seem to be in the way and I just don't like the experience of the little window. I'd rather eat a hot dog from a cart, at least I can have a quick chat and not star up into the big box.
You want some great street food?
Recently been strolling over to a food cart that seems to be making it's home on Windward Blvd in Venice in the evenings. I had the most insanely tasty Hawaiian pork sliders and corn on the cob there. I'm just blown away. They also seem to have a few other tasty looking items, but I haven't tried them because the pork is my weakness. Has anyone been to this place? If you know of other carts similar to this one, serving creative street foods, let me know. I drive across town all the time for a taco cart and the cart on Windward is way better.
Earl's Gourmet Grub in Mar Vista soft open
Hit it up today, about $10 for a smallish maple chicken sandwich. It was definitely a tasty sando and i will go back. Like any opening they have to get it running smoothly before they shine and I just waited 30min for a sando. That stretch of Venice Blvd is on a huge upswing.
The Hump serves whale?
It's starting to look pretty bleak over at Hump and Typhoon. I work next to them and have never seen so little traffic at these places. Other than the huge protest the other day there hasn't been anything going on. I wonder if they are even open right now.
The Hump serves whale?
You pick your battles. Hot buttons right now are whales and dolphins. There are always several people that come out shouting about hypocrisy and belittle the outrage of those who are disgusted by this. Every little bit helps and when movements that limit the killing and eating of specific endangered species get started they tend to grow and open eyes to other food sustainability issues. No one is a hypocrite for caring about this issue, they are hopefully just getting started.
The Hump serves whale?
Man, this news is snowballing. i've seen headlines on almost every site I have visited today plus facebook and twitter all over the place. They should probably close the place down and reopen under a different name and concept in order to avoid Typhoon also going down with the ship (same owners). I'm not really a food activist, but a serving a few things (like endangered whale) will keep me from ever going back to either restaurant. I'm sure other LA diners won't be that kind either. It's too bad, it's such a cool location. I would hate to be them if the their lease with the City of Santa Monica is near renewal. Ouch.
Recs for a Bar To Watch Sunday Night Football at in Los Angeles?
ESPN Zone or maybe a Yard House. Both downtown, but if you are not particular about bar food and are OK with the standard fare, both these places have great screens (my main priority).
Restaurants serving Thanksgiving dinner
I treat going out on Thanksgiving the same as on Valentine's Day when the restaurants add extra tables and rush you in with less than stellar results. Although, Saddlepeak would be great. they seem to do spectacular events. try to get invited to someone's home. $50 pp seems very attainable if you are not considering alcohol, but no way that's the price at Saddlepeak.
Best Burgers in Los Angeles
Randomly had an amazing chile burger at Le Grande Orange the other day. They nailed it with the meat..
Best Burgers in Los Angeles
Nope, no tomato compote on an FO burger. It's applewood bacon compote. That said, I disagree with the guy below suggesting that a burger is not a composed dish. I love to see who is "composing" the best burger out there.
West Hollywood = Chowhound Wasteland?
Also late to the thread, but the one thing I can add about Carlitos Gardel, with the exception of fine steaks and fries, is that this place stands out as the best service I have ever had in my life, hands down. I love those guys.
Playing Chow Tour Guide: Dos and Don'ts
I try to combine eats with sites, two birds with one stone. Looks for places that have good food with other attractions. If you are not trying to impress with fine dining or culinary madness then make it a nice meal near something else they might like to see.
Thyme Has Come Today...
Curious Palate is on venice, maybe two short blocks east of Centinela, south side. I love the place and have tried nearly all their menu and have learned of a couple of amazing cheeses from those guys. Smoked salmon sandwich, egg salad, cuban sandwich, chicken satay sandwich, triple pork chili, all so good. Helps that I live and work near it, so i can grab a sandy and eat at home with my pups. I'm not a sweets or baked goods guy, so I can't speak to their pastries, but I have turned so many people on to that place.
Also went back to Thyme and had a better experience, but I still say the comparison to Dean and Deluca is both hilarious and ludicrous. The first sandwich I tried at Thyme was the Salami pressed with gruyere (i think) and olive tapenade. they probably overdid it X3 on the tapenade, so I didn't like it that much, but the idea is good. Many things looked nice. Very standard for the genre.
Thyme Has Come Today...
Commented on it on another thread. Had lunch there. It was decent. They need some practice. $45 for a take and bake lasagna. I'll keep going to Curious Palate and try back in a month. I'm sure they will have it together by then.
New restaurant on Ocean Park
It's like a deli/bakery and cafe inside and it is called a market and cafe, so I'm pretty sure it's basically a cafe with items to go.
New restaurant on Ocean Park
Mon-Sat, 7am-7pm. That's their hours when they open. Wish it would happen already.
New restaurant on Ocean Park
Don't know anything about that catering company, but the place doesn't seem to be as close to ready as I had thought. Took another peek in it yesterday and noticed a lot of finishing that needs to be done as well as the rear parking lot is still unpaved and work continues on the wet utilities, so my random guess would be August opening at the earliest.
New restaurant on Ocean Park
I walking inside it this morning. Got about 15 feet in before getting kicked out, but it looked pretty nice. Very clean, white walls, nice cabinetry. It's definitely divided into three sections and will be completely different from anything else on that street. They parking lot is still slightly torn up from working with new utility lines, but they seem about finished with it as the trenches used to run up and down it and were 6 feet deep. Can't wait.
Bistro 31 in Santa Monica - A Real Treat!
My feeling is that you have to send it back. I have done so when they brought out a salad that was drowning in dressing. They are there to learn and by confronting them on their errors it would do them a great service.
New restaurant on Ocean Park
Slice is still there, but the Talking Stick coffee shop is gone. This is next to Slice.
Bistro 31 in Santa Monica - A Real Treat!
I work across the street. The place is great and I enjoy supporting the institute, but if coming from somewhere out of the neighborhood you should definitely call first to see what the hours are. 310-314-6057. Also try to go later in the semester when the kitchen seems to be producing higher quality eats. It's spotty at times, but I have had some amazing stuff there.
New restaurant on Ocean Park
Does anyone have any intel on what is happening on the stretch of Ocean Park between 16th and 17th in Santa Monica? They consolidated three spaces and have been working on a restaurant for months. Today i noticed that they took down the scaffolding and revealed the new facade. Seems close to finished and perhaps ready to open within a few months. I was told it was going to be a market/cafe/bakery/deli concept a la Joan's on 3rd, but that is unconfirmed. Regardless, we need good spots in the neighborhood and my hopes are up.
Bottega Louie?
Said that I liked the place on another post, but I'm on a roll this morning, so I'll say it again. I like the place. Good menu, good cocktails, nice venue. I think they plan to adorn the walls with some art, so the white on white on white theme will be toned down a bit (looking forward to it). I don't live or work downtown and instead use it as a playground, so I will probably never shop at the Louie market, but I perused it pretty carefully last night and thought it had some tasty looking patries, breads, and cheeses (no Pierre Robert though).
Dinner and Drinks Downtown Los Angeles?
Revisited Louie last night. Had a great little escolar. I definitely prefer Church & State mainly because I prefer french bistro style, but also because it's a smaller venue and I love the Biscuit lofts. Who has the nicer bar across the street? i would rather go to 7 Grand than Royal Claytons, but I also like them both. I guess I'm jjust saying that I will probably go to both a bit. Seriously though, I just want to go to Rivera, but it hasn't happened yet.
