PHX: Anyone know what's going on with Pane Bianco?

Maybe the people who made the sandwiches had an off day? That's the only reason I can think of.

PHX - Mi Cocina, Mi Pais

MCMP is easily my favorite tamale and empanada place in the valley. I've had fantasies of going there and ordering enough tamales to last me from visit to visit. Let me know when the next chow-meet-n-greet happens there and I'll do my best to attend.

Sweet Potato Fries - Phoenix

Vogue Bistro over on the west side has fantastic sweet potato fries. They're the right balance of crispy and sweet. Kokopelli's Bistro also makes them, but in my opinion, they're a bit over fried and greasy.

Best selection of Arizona Wines in Phoenix

I agree with you on Kokopelli's. Their wine, in my opinion, is the equivalent of - I want to say Boone's farm - but more like Kendall Jackson or other generic wines.

They were selling for $20 a bottle at their winery, but AJ's sells them for the more appropriate $5 price.

Kokopelli's is opening a branch here in the west valley over on Grand and Reems. I wish another winery were opening, but any new restaurant here is good.

You cannot miss mi cocinas mi pais. That place has, hands down, the best empanadas and tamales I've had in the valley.

Nick's Italian on Scottsdale and Grayslake has some good sandwiches in the $8 dollar range. You might want to check them out.

Best selection of Arizona Wines in Phoenix

I know AJ's often has a rack of local-interest wines. Don't think I saw something like that at Bevmo or Total Wine. The latter would be most likely to have the local rack.

In conclusion - AJ's.

Oh yes. Avoid Kokopelli's.

Great Food at Westgate?

I did not have a good experience at Kabuki, which is the joint next to the Picazzo output. They were out of several types of sushi and the ones they did have were a bit stale and tasteless. The miso tasted like it came out of a bag.

The decor, I think, is a bit staid. Not that decorations have anything to do with the food, but you'd think the designer could do something other than those dratted "Vino" posters.

Try Sweet o' Wine and Chocolate. They're a bit expensive, but the chocolate's pretty good.

Chodang Tofu & BBQ- Chandler, AZ

Have you been to Tina's Ethiopian Cafe? It's only a few doors down and the food is really heavenly. We moved from Chandler a few months ago and miss Tina terribly.

Where are the Good Restaurants (Non-Chain) in Surprise, AZ ?

The old people ruined it. They're the bane of every good restaurant in the West Valley.

Vogue Bistro on Waddell and Reems in the new, hot spot. Looks like Scottsdale in Surprise, so to speak. The chef is fresh from Chicago and serves wonderful food.

We're all waiting for the geezers to trash the place with their endless complaints about how the food isn't just like their midwestern mush.

Breakfast & Casual BBQ/Steakhouse Suggestions in Phoenix / Scottsdale?

I had a really good server's experience at My Florist. We brought our then 9 month old son with us. All though they didn't have an infant's seat, no one complained when we positioned our rather large stroller in a throughway. The waiter was really nice to us and our son.

Then again, the price didn't really fit the food served.

Need Input On Best Burger In PHX Area

I'm not getting the Delux-loving. When I ate there a few weeks ago, my burger was soggy, mushy, and a bit taste-less.

May have been an off day for the cook. I'll have to try it again. Maybe then I'll understand what everyone is raving about.

Mario Batali to PHX

Mario Batali will be having a Q&A session at Kierland Commons this Thursday, May 8th at noon.

I'm going to try to get an ASL interpreter. Is anyone else planning on attending?

Your opinion on these Phoenix restaurants?

I thought the pizza was horrid. The crust tasted of water. The sauce was banal and the cheese was melted to the point where if we picked up a slice, everything fell off.

Things must vary depending on who made the dough and who cooked the pizza.

Are there any regional foods unique to Arizona and Utah?

Can you expand on what you mean by "foods you cannot find elsewhere"? Given Phoenix's growth, I believe just about anything can be had here.

I mean, there are places that sell Scrapple. To me, that's hardcore.

Suggestions for a 50th anniversary celebration (phoenix)

Can you be more specific about the types of food you prefer and how far you're willing to drive? The first place that came to mind when you requested a private room was Kazimierz, but their menu is more grazing than meal-ish.

Offal in the Valley

Thanks. I ran a search using some of the terms hohokam suggested and here's what I found. I'm listing them for references.

Sweet Breads

Digestif
Kai (amuse bouche, only)

Oxtail

Sabor Cubano
Zinc

I didn't list liver because the engine brought up everything from pate, to chopped liver, which can be found at any good deli. Also not listed are items I couldn't find, like kidney, or trotters.

Offal in the Valley

I'm trying to expand my palette to include organ meats. My fear is that if I eat horribly cooked offal, I wont be willing to try it again.

Are there any chefs in the Phoenix metro area who specialize in, or make fantastic offal dishes?

Got car. Can travel. Not afraid of distances.

I searched the boards and the only thing that came up was Methode Bistro, and some posters indicated it was going mainstream.

anywhere good in NW Valley Phoenix

What is...off the charts, price-wise? Unfortunately, options here in Surprise aren't as plentiful as they are east, but with a little driving, you can find some good options. I'll list a few here

The biggest problem here is that restaurants tend to go out of business from lack of customers. There was a good, ethnic Romanian place (I think) that died recently.

There's more eating floating in the back of my mind. They'll come to me later, for sure.

Egg Foo Young? - Phoenix Area

Good egg foo young is hard to find out here in the West Valley, too. For the longest time, our only option was a soggy version at a local wok-slinging place. Now that there are two other options in the area, I'm a bit more satisfied.

One thing I've noticed is that here, egg foo young tends to come with a host of stir-fried vegetables. Back in the 'burbs of Chicago, egg foo young was a lonely dish. Is the side accompanying a Phoenix thing or a west coast thing?

Coming to Phoenix for a wedding.....

I really recommend that you brave the 2-3 hour wait, regardless of frequent flier miles. The pizza is that good. Besides, noshing at the bar next door makes the hours fly. Have a drink. Grab some olives. Good food takes time.

any Fourme d'Ambert or Capricho de Cabra sitings (PHX)?

I recall an imported foods store in downtown Chandler, in the same vicinity as 98 South, with a huge cheese selection. They might have it too.
